In the interests of protecting public health, there is a requirement to thoroughly disinfect and sample new water supplies before they are connected up to the main distribution network or brought into service. The requirements tend to vary between water companies but generally apply in the following instances;

• New installations (this excludes single occupancy private dwellings)• Major extensions• Underground pipework• Where contamination is suspected

Most water companies will require evidence that chlorination has taken place (usually including chlorine readings) and satisfactory sample results to prove the disinfection work has been successful before they will agree to connect a new pipe to their main network. Whilst this forms a fundamental part of building pre commissioning, it is often over looked or

crucial minor details are missed causing substantial delays and even put back handover dates.

Whether or not a pipe needs chlorinating will depend on the specific Water Company, but generally if the new main pipe exceeds 50mm internal diameter then it will require disinfecting. A number of water companies also operate a ‘7 day rule’ which gives the site developer 7 days post chlorination for the pipe to be connected up. If this deadline is exceeded, the pipe must be flushed and if still not connected inside a further 7 days, the chlorination process must be repeated. 7 days might seem like a long time but it will take a minimum of 3 days to obtain the sample results which realistically leaves a 3 day window for the Water Company to attend.

For new water services but not new mains pipes, there is no requirement to liaise with the Water Company as they do not need to attend and connect up. However, disinfection to BS6700 and sampling prior to handover is often included in the specification and should be planned into the schedule.
