THE INCREDIBLE LOVE OF GOD…

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who

believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to

save the world through him.” – John 3:16-17 (NLT)

While growing up in the home of a southern preacher, when a Billy Graham crusade came on television it was a family affair. We all watched Billy preach and heard the great baritone George Beverly Shea lead the singing (though, at that age, I would have rather been listening to the likes of the Beatles!). What always impressed me about Billy Graham were two things—his humility and his very simple message. For as long as I can remember, Dr. Graham’s message to his congregations always centered on the fact that … God loved them. That was it; it wasn’t complicated. He always kept the main thing … the main thing!

During my bypass recovery, as I was planning the next sermon series, the question kept popping up in my mind, “Do people really know that God loves them?” And, “Has anyone told them lately?” For me, it was a given. That’s the kind of home I grew up in. That’s the kind of faith I was taught to believe in. But, does everyone know that God loves them? As I prayed about what God wanted us to study next, as a congregation, I continued to be ‘nudged’ about the whole ‘love of God’ idea. So, here we are…

Convinced that people need a fresh assurance of this truth regularly, on Easter we launched into the “God Loves You” worship series, based in part on the work of Dr. David Jeremiah (I told you, I sat under his preaching for 7 weeks of my recovery!) and in part on my own personal study of God’s word and experience with God. It should prove to be good reminders to us all about the incredible, enormous love that God has for each and every one of us. Most people are familiar with the phrase “For God so loved the world…,” but do they really understand the depths of that love? Just to give you an example of what we’ll be studying for the next several weeks, this was a love that was ‘heroic.’ It was a love that would give a life for a friend—not just in theory, but in reality! It was a love that would give all for YOU. Has that got your attention? “For God so loved the world….” It’s kind of like singing “Amazing Grace” or listening to the “Hallelujah Chorus.” You know you’re on holy ground when you sing certain verses or hear certain parts or listen to certain messages. With all my heart (my new heart!), I believe this is where God’s going to lead us as we go forward together in this study, receiving all God wants us to understand. May you come to know the depths of God’s LOVE in the weeks ahead … and may that truth absolutely change your life! GOD LOVES YOU… With great expectations for our future together,

Local Unit Activities and Special Events The regular meeting is now scheduled for Thursday, April 4 at 7:00 PM in Fellowship Hall. The Executive Board (officers) will meet at 6:30 PM. The Esther Circle is presenting the program and the Grace Post Circle will serve refreshments. The Evening Star circle will meet on Monday, April 8th at 7:00 PM in Fellowship Hall (note change in location). Kim Roble and Charlene Mingst are hostesses and Jeanne Kapotas will lead us in devotions. The Grace Post circle will meet on Monday, April 15th at 1:30 PM at Marian Reynolds home. Ora Kasten will present the devotions. Special Events in April: The annual Spring Rummage & Bake Sale is scheduled for Friday, April 19th at 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday, April 20th at 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The Bake Sale is on Saturday only.

CHOIR NOTES The choir will sing at the traditional (9:00 AM) service on the

following Sundays in April—the 7th, 14th, and 21st. We will rehearse at 8:15 AM before the services and between

services on April 7th. As always we welcome both new and returning members!!

Please bring priced bake sale items on Friday before 5:30 PM or Saturday before 8:00 AM. Rummage items may be brought to the church on Wednesday, April 17th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and on Thursday, April 18th from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. (Plant Sale is dependent upon the weather.) The sign-up sheets are available in Fellowship Hall. Please try to help as many workers are needed. Mark your calendars as our annual Friends Night is scheduled for Thursday, May 2nd at 7:00 PM. Please bring a guest and join us for this music themed event with the quartet All 4-Given. Refreshments will be served following the program.

COULEE DISTRICT EVENT

The Coulee District Annual Spring Spiritual Retreat will be held on Saturday, April 27 at the Baraboo Emmanuel UMC. Sister Eleanor Hoffman, a member of the Sinsinawa Dominicans will lead us in our retreat work and spiritual direction. This event begins with registration at 9:00 AM and will conclude after the Communion and Blessing at 2:00-2:30 PM. The registration fee is $15.00 which includes lunch. The deadline for registration is April 13. Please see Charlene Mingst for the forms and more information.

If you are, what ministries are you most passionate about? Don’t pass up the chance to make a special gift this year and save on

Don and Sandi always wanted to see a youth minister in place at their church. When they learned they could make a distribution directly to their church from their Traditional IRA to provide the seed money to start this ministry, they decided to tithe their IRA. A few other members of their church joined them in this effort and now the youth ministry position is funded for the next five years. The IRA Rollover is a special giving option that is only available through December 31, 2013 to persons 70-1/2 and older. Call your IRA administrator today and request to have your Required Minimum Distribution for 2013 (or a gift of your choice up to a maximum of $100,000) sent directly to your local church or another charity. This gift will benefit the ministry you have designated and will NOT be included in your gross income for tax purposes.

There is an old parable of the man who had a pond of water on his land. He was always hoarding water, turning every little ditch into his pond, setting tubs and buckets under every eave and spout, and carrying water to put into it. He envied even the birds what they drank; fearing lest someday the pond would be dry and he would perish of thirst. But coming one day with an unusually heavy load of water, he slipped and fell into his pond and was drowned. There are many [of us] who are hoarding and pouring into the pond of our material wealth, who at last will be overwhelmed in its waters. It is not the pond which never gives, but the stream which does nothing but gives and looks as if it would soon run itself away, that is constantly replenished and is kept pure, sparking and bright.
