Dear 4-H Families & Members,
It is hard to believe that it is March already. I am completing an online Extension course focused
on VOLUNTEERS. One of the topics of our webinar was “Volunteers and Youth Communicating
Value of Extension Programs.” You may wonder why I would talk to you about this in the
newsletter. As a non-profit organization, it is important that we can communicate the value of the
4-H program to new members, parents, potential volunteers as well as stakeholders. Here are some
key ideas to think about as you ponder your role in communicating value.
You may want to begin thinking about what you would say as an elevator speech. An elevator
speech is a very short summary highlighting the program or organization. If you walked onto the
elevator with someone important (or a potential new family) and only had this brief time, what
would you say? Preparing for this kind of meeting will help you in both unexpected and planned
encounters with decision-makers and other important stakeholders, as well as new families.
Your elevator speech should be:
LENGTH: Approximately 30-60 seconds. The length of a typical elevator ride.
MESSAGE: The message should have impact. In this brief conversation, include your MOST
RELEVANT information. What do you really want the person to walk away
knowing? Consider including a story, statistics or facts, or other information
about a program. Try to share something memorable.
TONE: It should be sincere and sound conversational. Remember to practice the speech
so you feel comfortable delivering it.
OUTCOME: It should leave the listener wanting to hear more.
Like many other presentations, it contains 3 parts:
INTRODUCTION: Introduce yourself and what organization you represent. A good,
firm handshake may be an appropriate part of the introduction.
BODY: Include cur rent, relevant, and impactful information. What do you want the
listener to know and remember? You’re trying to “sell” them on an idea, concept, or program.
You want the person to buy into your message and leave them wanting to learn more.
CONCLUSION: Thank them for taking the time to learn about the program. You could
ask for their contact information and follow-up with them. Alternatively, invite them to
contact you if they want more information or have questions. In addition, if it feels
appropriate, you could also hand them a card with your contact information.
Have a great month and I can’t wait to hear some of your elevator speeches.

NOTICE OF RECOMMENDATION OF A CHANGE IN
BYLAWS At the February 20 4-H Leaders Association Meeting, there was
a discussion on changes to the bylaws that were recommended
from the Executive Board. The changes that are recommended
are listed below. These bylaws were tabled until the April 17th
4-H Leaders Association meeting and will be voted on that
time.
Bylaw Recommendation from the Executive Board :
The motion from December was reviewed in that Article VI 2.2
be changed to "Secretary, treasurer and delegates-at-large will
each be elected for a (2) year term.”
2.3 will be eliminated and incorporated into 2.2. This means 4
adults and 4 youth will be elected every year. Motion was
made, seconded, and passed.
Reporter Position: It was also reviewed that the board
decided that the reporter position would be eliminated because
local newspapers have not been publishing county news. Penny
recommended keeping the position but changing the position to
be social media based versus newspaper based.
Bylaw Change Article VI section 3.5: Kris Rennhack
made a motion to change the words “county newspapers” to
“social media” and Gabby Rennhack seconded it. We will work
to create a Dodge County 4-H Facebook page.
The 2018 Fair Judges Training Webinar will be held on March
26 at 6:00 p.m. and is geared for new county fair judges as
well as judges that would like to be updated on the general prin-
ciples of what it takes to judge at Wisconsin County Fairs.

or email Tracy at [email protected] for a registration
form.

Expectations of Judges
Types of Judging
The fee is $15.00. Participants will be able to connect in their
homes with an internet connection with the audio done as a
Wisline via the phone. We will send all participants the connec-
tion information and the PowerPoint after they are registered.

Join the Dodge County 4-H Dairy Judging Team! What is dairy judging?
Dairy judging is a team competition, based on evaluating the
physical confirmation of dairy cows. A class of 4 cows or heif-
ers is placed in order of their physical confirmation of Udder,
Dairy Strength, Rear Feet and Legs, and Frame using the Pure-
bred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA) Uniform Score-
card. Junior contestants also complete Type Analysis Questions
(TAQs) which ask about particular traits for different ani-
mals. Senior contestants give a set of oral reasons, which de-
fend one’s placing of a class. Classes are judged in 12 minutes
(placing only) or 15 minutes (reasons and TAQ’s).
No experience is necessary!
Who can compete? Any youth who is enrolled in the Dodge
County 4-H Program.
Juniors: Celebrate 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, or 14th birthday during
the competition year
Seniors: Celebrate 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, or 19th birthday during
the competition year
How do I join the Dodge County 4-H Dairy Judging Team?
Joining is easy – come to the practices! Practices are mandato-
ry, so each team member can improve their skills to the best of
their ability and work and learn together as a team. Of course,
if you have a conflict, contact any of the coaches.

MAS Project Member Activity Card
(Orange Card)
There has been some confusion regarding the educational
points required by the MAS committee for the education point
card. “4” points are required and can be obtained by attending
educational livestock events. AT LEAST 2 of the points need
to be gotten at a county or state educational event. For some
youth who have no means to have “local club” learning events,
it is always possible to have all 4 or more points obtained from
county or state events.
If an “out of county” event is where a point will be obtained,
use the back of the card to explain the event AND obtain a
signature that can be identified so a call may be given if the
committee has questions.
No educational event may give a youth more than 1
educational points (even if other county’s youth obtain 2+
points for such an event).
Youth attending college may obtain a point for agricultural
events attended by speaking with obtaining MAS committee
approval.
