National Volunteer Week April 7-13
April is National Volunteer Month
National Volunteer week was founded in 1974 by Presidential Proclamation, to spotlight the
various opportunities available for individuals who want to volunteer. As part of True Leaders in
Service and National Volunteer Appreciation Month, 4-H members across the nation will pledge
their hands to larger service and lead positive change, which empowers their peers and their
communities. This April is National Volunteer Month and 4-H members all across our
community and nation will roll up their sleeves and pledge their hands to larger service. They are
putting their pledge into action.
What does volunteering look like for your club? The pledge of hands to larger service can take on
many shapes and sizes. Some members will collect trash along a highway while others make cards
for service members. A club may be hosting a bake sale or working at fish fry to raise money for a
worthy cause. Other clubs make blankets for youth, shop with cops during the holidays, collect
pop tabs for Ronald McDonalds House or make Easter Baskets for Children’s Hospitals. Older
youth sharing their woodworking, animal husbandry, or cake decorating expertise with younger
members and Cloverbuds, are just a few ways volunteers help in their own community. Ringing
bells, opening doors and showing kindness are just a few ways to put that pledge into action. The
opportunities to volunteer are endless! No matter what your volunteering looks like, what matters
is that you are helping a worthy cause and making a difference in someone’s life.
Dodge County 4-H would not exist without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers
inspire kids and help our members grow into true leaders. Leading by example, Dodge County 4-
H volunteers help ensure our 668 members will have opportunities to reach their fullest potential.
This year we have 261 adult and 79 older youth volunteers! In 2018, our volunteers logged 22,338
of volunteer hours. If we put those volunteer hours into dollars using the Points of Light
calculator, $551,525 is the economic worth Adult Volunteers contributed in support of Dodge
County 4-H. What an impact our Dodge County 4-H volunteers have on their community!
4-H Volunteers empower youth with skills to lead for a lifetime. Thank you to all who have
supported Dodge County State 4-H by giving of your time and expertise. Our volunteers truly help
make our program a success.
Thank you!
Melissa Litherland
Interim 4-H Program Coordinator
Volunteers aren’t paid, not because they are
worthless, but because they are priceless.

...to the Dodge County 4-H Dairy Bowl Team for competing in
the Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Bowl competition in Madison on Feb.
9, 2019, at the UW-Madison Sewell Social Sciences Hall. Four-
teen teams faced off in a highly competitive junior division for
youth ages 8-14.
4-H Dairy Bowl is a quiz-bowl competition where all questions
deal with dairy topics and teams of four members compete with
each other. Dodge County sent a Junior Team that ranked among
the best in the competition. Team members included Lane Wen-
dorf,(County Line); Ian and Marissa Spoke (Portland Boosters);
and Vivian Lichty (Hyland Prairie). Sarah Wendorf (County
Line); Carrie Warmka (County Resource Leader); and Nikki
Gunst (Herman Hornets) coach the Dodge County Dairy Bowl
Junior Team.
Competition in 4-H Dairy Bowl encourages junior - and senior-
level 4-H members to develop a more complete knowledge of
dairy animals and related subjects. This contest provides an edu-
cational dairy program for
all dairy-project members,
including those who may
not own a dairy-project
animal, and provides a
way to develop alertness
and self confidence.

Due to the nationwide shortage of antigen for the testing of
pullorium and no certainty as to when more will be availa-
ble, collecting paperwork when purchasing chicks is more
important. The antigen remaining in the country will expire
the end of April but birds must be at least four months of
age to use.
When you purchase your birds, be sure to collect a copy
of their NPIP, WI tested flock, or WI associated flock
certificates. Anyone with birds over four months of age
can have them tested at our April meeting if they contact
Dan Schwandt in advance at 920-763-8030.

MAS Project Member Activity Card
(Orange Card)
Educational points are required by the MAS committee to
complete the card. “4” points are required and can be obtained
by attending educational livestock events. AT LEAST 2 of the
points need to be gotten at a county or state educational event.
For some youth who have no means to have “local club”
learning events, it is always possible to have all 4 or more
points obtained from county or state events.
If an “out of county” event is where a point will be obtained,
use the back of the card to explain the event AND obtain a
signature that can be identified so a call may be given if the
committee has questions.
No educational event may give a youth more than 1
educational points (even if other county’s youth obtain 2+
points for such an event).
