EOCHAILL ÓG-HURLING PARISH LEAGUES – FINALS NIGHT GAMES

Friday 30th May was Finals Night of the Eochaill Óg 2014 Hurling Parish Leagues. A wonderful occasion adorned with bright sunshine and freshly cut grass, a huge crowd and lovely hurling gave us something to remember for along time. The three finals were played off and produced three winning teams on the night but in truth everyone was a winner on the night.

The Robbie O’ Sullivan Shield Final was played between Cuchulainn and Na Fianna with Cuchulainn winning on a scoreline of 3-01 to 1-02. The Tom “Midge” Pomphrett Final was played between The Gaels and The Crokes where The Crokes emerged victorious on a scoreline of 0-05 to 2-02. The George Bulman Cup Final saw Setanta defeat The Davitts 1-03 to 0-01. Team photos were taken prior to the games and all 6 teams and managers were led out onto the field by the Youghal Pipe Band. Amhrann Na bhFiann was observed by all and Mick Sheehan provided outside commentary of the days proceedings and interviews between each game. Official match programmes were for sale and a scoreboard in operation giving the occasion an “All Ireland Final” feel to it, which indeed it was to all who played in it. Each game was refereed by a Youghal Senior Hurler, Barry Ring, John Grace and Nigel Roche respectively.

The parents, grand parents and family members of the players who attended in large numbers from Match Day 1 back in April 28th turned out in force again to create a marvellous, friendly, happy atmosphere.

All three trophies were presented by Dan O’Sullivan, Kathleen Bulman and Angela Pomphrett to the winning teams amid scenes of total happiness and pure joy. Medals were also presented to all players including the managers ensuring every player was a winner on the day, which they were! Afterwards players went to the clubhouse where they had a post match meal and savoured the day with their teammates. Parents and friends also had tea and sandwiches in the club bar to complete a lovely day.

The whole event was a massive success. We at Eochaill Óg knew it could work but to be honest we were taken aback by how much everyone “got behind it”, the amount of sandwiches and cakes made by parents for the night itself and support and thanks from all afterwards was very humbling and the smiles on the players’ faces said it all. We had 11’s 10’s and 9 year olds all mixed together

EOCHAILL ÓG-HURLING PARISH LEAGUES – ROUND 5 GAMES

What an end to Match Day 5 as all 6 teams gave it their all. Indeed all 3 games were tight affairs with only a puck of a ball the difference in all the score lines. In fact it was the first time that all 3 losing teams gained a bonus point.

Game 1 pitched The Davitts (1-04) against Cúchulainn (1-00). The Davitts scored two early points and scored a 3rd point just before halftime to lead 3 points to nil. A feature of this game was the hooking and blocking by both sides. Cúchulainn scored a goal in 2nd half and that put the cat among the pigeons but The Davitts had the last say when a goal in the last 2 minutes sealed the win.

Game 2 featured The Crokes (1-00) and Setanta (1-01). A tense affair with scores at a premium kept supporters of both sides on a knife edge until the end. Setanta actually hit the post twice in a minute as they went for goal and at the other end The Setanta full back stopped a certain Crokes goal. Setanta laid siege on the Crokes goal late on in the game and the winning goal came with 2 minutes remaining with a crashing drive to the net by the Setanta forward.

Game 3 had Na Fianna (2-00) and The Gaels (1-00) locking horns. Another close game as both sets of players really displayed great grit and determination throughout. Na Fianna struck first with a great strike to the net while The Gaels hit the post at the end of the first half. The second half was even closer, Na Fianna got their second goal and The Gaels looked down and out but they rallied again and scored their first goal with 5 minutes remaining. As hard as they tried, the equalising goal remained elusive and right at the end a great shot by the Gaels forward just went wide of the goals. Na Fianna held out to win.

The Bonus points proved crucial in the end as 2nd and 3rd places and 4th and 5th places

EOCHAILL ÓG-HURLING PARISH LEAGUES – ROUND 4 GAMES

Things are getting very interesting as we approach the final round of games next Monday to determine the final placings for FINALS DAY Friday 30th May. “All to play for ”is the overriding message as all teams have a mathematical chance of grabbing the 1st or 2nd place spot in the final league table.

Game 1 between Setanta (1-02) and Cúchulainn (1-02) provided the first draw of the competition. The 1-02 each scoreline where Setanta grabbed the all important equaliser was a great game of hurling to watch. The ball whizzing up and down the field as both sides tried their best to win the game, was a joy to behold.

Game 2 between The Davitts (4-02) and Na Fianna (1-01) was a mid table clash, but The Davitts broke loose when they had a purple patch for 3 minutes and scored 2 fast goals and this gave them a platform to win the game.

In Game 3, The Gaels (1-01) and The Crokes (2-03) the last game of the evening, The Crokes scored their second win on the trot and so condemned The Gaels to their second loss on the trot, which shows how competitive the teams are with each other. No team is pulling away. The Gaels did secure a vital Bonus Point and this could be "key" when final placings are determined. Indeed, The Crokes keeper made a great double save in the second half that Anthony Nash would be proud of and that probably secured the game for The Crokes.

EOCHAILL ÓG HURLING PARISH LEAGUES – ROUND 3 GAMES

Well after Round 3, the table is shaping up very nicely indeed. With the bottom side Cúchulainn registering their 1st win against 5th place Na Fianna, and second placed Setanta defeating table toppers The Gaels quite comprehensively and with 3rd placed The Davitts defeated by The Crokes, this has had the effect of squeezing the table together with all teams now in contention for the 1st and 2nd places entering the final 2 games. Bonus points could be a crucial factor in the final placings!!

Game 1 between and Na Fianna (1-01) and Cúchulainn (2-02) was a tightly contested affair with very little between the sides with the ball flying from goal to goal as both sides tore into each other. The difference being was Cúchulainn took their chances whilst Na Fianna missed many scoring chances. Cúchulainn are now back in contention while Na Fianna picked up a bonus point.

Game 2 between The Davitts (1-02) and The Crokes (2-00) was a mid table clash, scores were very hard fought for and the result in doubt until the end. The Crokes won out by the narrowest of margins to get their second win whilst The Davitts were pipped at the post but picked up another bonus point. Indeed all 3 games with The Davitts have been very tight affairs with only a point or 2 in it at the end.

In Game 3, The Gaels (0-02) and Setanta (4-04) Setanta ran out easy winners, a couple of goals just

Page 12: youghal.cork.gaa.ieyoughal.cork.gaa.ie/Shared Documents/Archive Parish Le…  · Web viewplaying with and against each other and by the end of the whole event they were playing as

after half time sealed the win. 1 goal in particular deserves a mention, The Gaels were on the attack and a great stop and clearance from the Setanta keeper, 2 clearances later, and the ball was swept down the field and ended up in the back of the other net!!

A special word of thanks to all parents who brought their kids and stayed around to create a wonderful atmosphere for the 3 games and also to Andrew Murphy and James Barrett who refereed the games without any fuss.

A minutes silence was impeccably observed by all for young Fionn Cashman who tragically died last week. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis

EOCHAILL ÓG HURLING PARISH LEAGUES – ROUND 2 GAMES

Round 2 games were played on a damp Monday Bank holiday Monday 5th May. The weather which was bad all weekend thankfully improved for a few hours and thus gave us the opportunity to get

Page 15: youghal.cork.gaa.ieyoughal.cork.gaa.ie/Shared Documents/Archive Parish Le…  · Web viewplaying with and against each other and by the end of the whole event they were playing as

Round 2 games played off. The less than ideal conditions however did not quell the endeavour and skill of all six sides and of the large crowd that attended yet again to cheer on the players.

All 3 games provided some great entertainment and the league table is bubbling along very nicely now. 2 of last weeks losers became winners this week whilst in Game 3, The Gaels 2-06 who were fortunate to squeak a last second win last week ran out convincing winners this week over Cúchulainn 0-00 to become the remaining unbeaten side with 2 wins from 2 games.

Game 2 between Setanta (3-01) and The Davitts (3-02) supplied this weeks cliff-hanger finish as with minutes to go both teams traded a goal each to set up a grand stand finish for the last minute. With both teams level the wheel turned for The Davitts this week as they scored a last second point to win the game by the minimum of margins and this certainly made up for the heart breaking nature of their defeat last week!!

Game 1 between and Na Fianna (4-00) and The Crokes (1-01) proved to be a complete turnaround for both sides from the previous week, Na Fianna only scored 1 goal last week but bagged 4 this week and The Crokes who scored 2-05 last week were held to 1-01 this week which shows how fortunes can change from week to week.

A special word of thanks to all parents who brought their kids and stayed around to create a wonderful atmosphere for the 3 games and also to Youghal Senior Hurlers Nigel Roche and Barry Ring who refereed the games flawlessly.

EOCHAILL ÓG HURLING PARISH LEAGUES – ROUND 1 GAMESThe eagerly anticipated Parish Leagues took off on a balmy Monday night 28th April at Club Áras. A festival of hurling was provided by Eochaill Og’s U11’s, 10’s and 9’s young hurlers. Three action packed games kept a large crowd enthralled until the very end.Game 1 was between The Crokes 2-05 Cúchulainn 3-01. A 1 point win for the The Crokes. The Croke's took control of the game early and opened up an early lead but the boys of Cúchulainn battled back with great heart to draw the game level with minutes remaining. The Croke’s however had the last say and scored what turned out to be the winning point with virtually the last puck of a very close and exciting game. Cúchulainn however do gain a bonus point.Game 2 was between Na Fianna 1.00 and Setanta 3.02. This game was end to end stuff with the ball flying up and down the field. Setanta however built up a head of steam and ran out 3.02 to 1.0 winners with a storming finish to pull away in the last 2 minutes. This game was also very exciting and some great pieces of individual skill and determination were shown by all the boys.Game 3 was between The Gaels 2.00 and The Davitt's 1.01. This turned out to be the last game of the night so all eyes turned to the finishing stages of this game and people were not to be disappointed. A great rearguard display by The Gaels after sustained attacking play by The Davits made for enthralling viewing. All players showed great determination and battling qualities and scores were very hard to come by but with The Davitt’s leading by 1.01 to 1.0 and seconds remaining, the Gaels went down the field and scored a goal with the last puck of the game to snatch victory form the jaws of defeat. Dramatic stuff indeed!!A special word of thanks to all parents who brought their kids and stayed around to create a wonderful atmosphere for the 3 games and also to Youghal Senior Hurlers Nigel Roche and Damien Ring who refereed the games flawlessly.Round 2 games begin at the same time 6.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday 5 th May, Club Áras. See ye all there!!!Round 2 fixtures are:Na Fianna v The CrokesSetanta v The Davitt’sCúchulainn v The Gaels

EOCHAILL ÓG PARISH LEAGUES LAUNCH NIGHTEochaill Óg held their Launch Night for the upcoming 2014 Parish Hurling Leagues last Friday 11th April at Club Áras. A well attended hall saw Mick Sheehan MC for the occasion introduce Ger Motherway, Chairman of Youghal GAA Club. Ger welcomed all parents and kids to the Launch Night and thanked the three families (Bulman, Pomphrett and O’Sullivan families) who kindly donated 3 trophies for the competition. Sean Crowley from Rebel Óg addressed the large crowd and commended Eochaill Óg on their endeavours with the Parish Leagues and Inter School Blitzes in nurturing young kids to play the games and indeed stated that it can be seen as “the model” for other clubs to imitate throughout the county.Former Youghal Hurling great Frankie Keane a county winner in 1969 paid homage to previous “Street Leagues” and the characters and former Youghal greats who played in these Leagues throughout the 1930’s, 60’s, 80’s and today. Indeed an interesting snippet was Paddy Ring, (grandfather of the 3 Ring brothers on the present Youghal team, was captain of the first Street League winning side in the 30’s).Alan Geary, Chairman of Eochaill Óg thanked all for attending, the senior club for all the support received and the organising committee of Johnny Bulman, Vincent Murray, H Nicholson, Alan Geary and Andrew Murphy.Current Cork Star Pat Horgan from Glen Rovers was very generous with his time as he described his own Street League days with Glen Rovers and Youghal star and Cork Panellist Bill Cooper outlined his hopes for the forthcoming inaugural season in the senior ranks with Youghal. Both players signed hurleys and jerseys and posed for pictures afterwards. The kids were kept on tender hooks as both Bill and Pat Horgan completed the draws for the team names and the opening 1st round fixtures.A wonderful occasion was complemented by some nostalgic old photos of previous Street Leagues organised by Assumpta Parker.
