Documentation

What is traceability ?

The formal definition: Traceability is the ability to

chronologically interrelate uniquely identifiable

entities in a way that is verifiable.

Traceability is the ability to verify the history,

location, or application of an item by means of

documented recorded identification.

Traceability

What does this mean ??

The practical implementation of traceability will

often vary according the product/application

For off-shore fabricators the implementation will

be more comprehensive than for ex shipbuilding

Traceability

From NORSOK M-601::: The WPQR/PQR documentation shall include the

material certificates for the base and filler materials applied in the weld qualification test.

All welding and related activities shall comply with the requirements of ISO 3834-2 and the additional

requirements of this NORSOK standard.

Traceability

All welds should be identified by unique numbers. The shop drawings shall contain enough information

to enable correct selection of WPS. Minimum information needed is • material type/grade and grouping number (ISO/TR

15608), • dimension (outside diameter and wall thickness), • PWHT requirement.

Traceability

All welds should be identified by unique numbers.

All pipes, fittings and welding consumables should be colour coded according to Annex D.

All welding consumables shall have individual marking.

Traceability

From NORSOK M-101::

The fabricator shall apply a weld numbering system for identification on all shop drawings and as

reference in all documentation.

Welding shall be carried out in accordance with the WPS and applicable drawings.

Traceability

The inspection category shall be decided by the designer in accordance with NORSOK N-004, and

shall be specified on the design drawings.

Traceability

Requires that a system for identification has been implemented

BUT--- that means that the identification must be maintained through the production process

Traceability

Ex. PLATE Plate is documented through a Material Certificate

However that plate comes from a Batch no Produced at one Furnace at a given factory

When the plate is cut-- the all parts has to be traced back to the plate

And the remaining plate to be identified

Page 11: Documentation Traceability and documentation is required

Traceability

Then we need to know where the parts have been used in the construction

We have to know which weld numbers are joining the parts

And we need to know which WPS has been used for each of the welds

Page 12: Documentation Traceability and documentation is required

Traceability

We need to know which welder(s) was welding that weld

We need to know when it was welded

We need to know the result of the inspection beiing

carrried out

Documentation

In order to fullfill the traceability we have to create a proper documentation that we can use as a proof of our work.

We can create the documentation in two different

ways

Page 14: Documentation Traceability and documentation is required

Documentation

A. Positive documentation--- that means we create documents for everything we are doing in form of reports

That means if the inspection is OK we make a report

saying that the results is OK

Page 15: Documentation Traceability and documentation is required

Documentation

B. Negative documentation-- that means we create reports in form of documents only when the findings are NOT OK.

For findings that are positive, or OK, we sign off

that the finding was ok and that it has been carried

out according a standard procedure specified in

detail by the company

Documentation

Documentation is vital for establishing a good relationship with the customer

Documentation should be followed up so that the

required documentation can be delivered together

with the product delivery
