A s the first of three modules that form the Master Programme for Professional Photography at the IED Madrid, this specialization course is dedicated to documentary and reportage. It also

includes transferable knowledge in copyright issues, media relations, communication theory, ethics of the image, retouching and colour correction, new documentary practice, location management, and contracts. A strong and appealing personal work can make the difference when trying to convince magazines and publishers. Based on this assumption, the enhancement of the students’ professional skills in documentary photography is complemented by developing a personal body of work.

The co-directors of this course are good examples of a new breed of photographers who see their documentary work embedded in the artistic field. They are also docents of the European Master of Fine Art Photography and will tutor the students in the creation of a personal artistic project that will go far beyond pure technical excellence.

Students will enter the world of reportage through a network of lecturers, teacher, tutors, and the program’s directors. They have the opportunity to further their studies in the framework of the Master Programme for Professional Photography and to promote the final project through our contributing partners, with the ends of publication and distribution.

Workshops:

Ricardo Cases: Finding your voice in documentary photography Ricardo Cases may be one of the best examples to show what Spanish photography can offer today: a self-conscious and direct aesthetic that underlines a critical perspective with a humorous - or even ironic touch, and – most importantly – a true passion for the photographic medium. His workshop will guide you to take full control of the medium’s rhetoric, and get ready to push its limits.

Paul Kranzler: Getting the picture, constructing the story Paul Kranzler’s imagery is based on an analytical and narrative approach to photography. Wide-ranging in approach, his work easily mixes genres and techniques, and his series often are combinations of portraits, still-lifes, landscapes and even nudes. He will show the students how to dominate the photographic technique in order to construct a meaningful story.

Edmund Clark: Contemporary documentary practice Edmund Clark uses photography, found imagery and text to explore links between representation and politics. He is best known for his work on Guantanamo: If the Light Goes Out (2010) and the project Still Life Killing Time (2007). His workshop will analyse contemporary uses of the documentary rhetoric in photography.

Silvia Omedes: Truth and ethics in reportage Silvia Omedes is an independent curator, picture editor, and founding director of the Photographic Social Vision Foundation in Barcelona, a nonprofit platform that supports photojournalism through exhibitions, conferences, and workshops. In her workshop, Silvia will question the use of photography as a truth telling medium, advocating for projects that raise our awareness for social issues on a global basis.

Programme

Seminars and practical exercises:

Camerawork I & II In these practical sessions, the students will explore different camera types formats used in documentary and reportage photography. They will learn how to dominate lens system, exposure (relationship aperture/speed/sensibility) and depth of field for their story-telling. Color theory, time control and composition will be taught in classroom and

- most importantly - in the street, with the camera in your hand.

New Documentary Practice Photographers are not only image producers but also consumers, mediators and agents. They have to show responsibility for the impact of their picture in an image-devouring media industry. Photographers are never just observers, they also take part in the events they cover. Contemporary documentary practice is well aware of this dilemma, which has been also at the center of postmodernist thinking. In this module we analyse how to escape the paradox situation by introducing the photographer’s subject view as a defining factor for final outcome of the image.

Professional Retouching and Colour Correction for reportage Histograms, selective color, selection tools and layers will be explained in depth, in order to understand the basic retouching techniques for reportage and documentary-style photography. Professional software such as Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom and Capture One will be used to convert Raw format images into photographs ready for publication.

Communication Theory and Practice Digitalization has rendered photography equally capable of producing absolutely instant images. Digital cameras have long learnt to record video, and video cameras store photographs. Mobile phones do both, and transmit the imagery directly to the Internet. That is not to say, of course, that forms mixing still and moving images are something new. They are present in the medium of film since its inception, yet digitalization engenders a new relationship with technology: photographers no longer need to fully understand the technology they are employing. The computer is a black box that we do not have to open; we merely need to know how to use it. Learning consists in locating and filtering information, what counts is access to the necessary know-how, in a frenetic technological spiral. But also in the knowledge of the basic principles of information and communication theory.

Documentary video As photography has been fully integrated with video by means of digital convergence, the current generation of artists has become very careful at designing the “end products” of their photographic process. This module will introduce the student to working with moving images and editing them in professional software.

Distribution Platforms Even as pixels replace print, and as newspapers and magazines undergo wrenching surgery, there is still a market for reportage photography. However, it has changed radically in the last decade, and will never be the same anymore in what many people call the “post-photographic” era. New distribution platforms pop up every day, some of them are remakes of old mechanisms, others use the genuinely new potential if the Internet in innovative ways.

Studio visits Students will have the unique opportunity to visit Martin Parr’s studio in London, and to meet Simon Roberts in his studio in Brighton. This trip will take place in late 2014 and will be one of the highlights of the programme.

Master class with Cristina de Middel Cristina De Middel is a Spanish photographer who is currently based in London. She has been working for different newspapers in Spain and with NGOs such as Doctors Without Borders and the Spanish Red Cross for more than 8 years. In her photographic practice, she combines strictly documentary assignments with personal projects, which that have been awarded and exhibited internationally, including a nomination for the Deutsche Börse Prize and the Infinity Award from the ICP in New York. Her artistic work deliberately asks the audience to question the language and the veracity of photography as a document, and plays with reconstructions or archetypes that blur the border between reality and fiction.

Man has always used the image to communicate. Understood as reality

and symbol, it represents the whole and the parts, the real and the fictitious, it transmits emotion and meaning. It is also the link between the word and our experience of the world, as well as being a socialising element. It occupies the most important place in communication and involves people, society and culture.

The multiplication of electronic devices and the diversity of communication channels present us with an almost uninterrupted flow of images. An invasion which determines our way of communicating and has involved a change in our culture.

This circumstance requires a constant generation and updating of visual systems, which decide the communication link between individuals, companies, platforms and networks.

Because of all this, the IED Master Visual Communication School supplies the tools and theoretical and technical foundations necessary to cope with this new scene, based on the following objectives:

• To analyze the current role of the image and pose possible alternatives for the immediate future.

• To delve into theoretical, technical and projectual knowledge of the different fields of audiovisual design.

• To provide the students with a creative vision.

The IED Master Visual Communication School trains competent professional for their incorporation into the work market and entrepreneur activity, by means of the tools and the vision to interact directly with the world as a generating agent of value and change.

The IED Master is constantly in contact with the business world as part of its curriculum, with a relationship that runs parallel to the training course.

Teaching and business are intertwined in each of the courses, enriching the educational experience of the students with case studies, competitions, involvement in projects, etc. This link is consolidated in most programmes with the completion of a final project in which the student makes use of all the knowledge acquired during the course.

To promote these synergies, the IED Madrid has a Business Bureau where agreements with public and private entities are activated, to develop educational content as part of our Career Guidance. The aim is to facilitate access to the employment market and to create a network of professional contacts from the start of the academic year.

Education and business come together in each of the courses, enriching the experience of our students

Living in Madrid means taking part in an intense and varied student environment

Studying in Madrid

Madrid is the “campus” of the IED Master. A dynamic, accessible and sustainable

city based on an Avant Garde cultural model.

Thanks to its location in the city centre and the collaboration agreements established with local institutions, such as the Madrid City Hall, the students and collaborators of the IED Madrid enjoy privileged access to the large public centres for culture, arts and education: the Biblioteca Nacional, La Casa Encendida, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo del Prado, etc.

Living in Madrid also offers the chance to take part in a lively and varied student atmosphere. The city boasts a rich educational choice (seven public universities, eight private universities) as well as research centres, summer courses, forums, seminars and specialisation courses, to name just a few.

The cultural life of Madrid, the quality and quantity of its museums, cultural centres, theatres, auditoriums and cinemas turn it into a very active cultural centre, which hosts some of the most important cultural events of the year in Spain, such as ARCO and PHotoEspaña.

Dynamic, multicultural, hospitable and tolerant, its character as an open city enhances its image as a space for the exchange of ideas and cultures, and favours a welcoming atmosphere that combines education, culture and fun.

As an economic and financial centre, the home of the main national and international institutions and companies, the daily life in Madrid brings together professionals from all sectors, to constantly generate new professional opportunities.

It is an important link between Europe and Latin America, the

North of Africa and the Middle East, thanks to its historic past and its privileged geo-strategic position.

Its geographical position, infrastructures and human capital, along with its quality of life and projection to the future, turn Madrid into one of the most attractive cities in which to live, study or work.

Hospitality DepartmentThe IED Madrid has launched a new service for international students and for those who live outside Madrid, situated in the Palacio de Altamira.

If you have any doubt or question, please contact us by email at [email protected] or by phone on +34 91 448 04 44.
