RADUS HP3 – HOLOGRAMOne System – Numerous Applications

Product Security means making arrangements in order to protect a product actively against piracy and counterfeiting.Hereby one has to differentiate between recognition features and security features. Recognition features are for examplelogos or typical designs which mark the product from other similar or competing products.

But such recognition features do not grant any security when it comes to product copies and counterfeits. This is differentwith respect to security features such as iridescent holograms. From different viewing angles optical effects such as mo-vements/animations and changing of colour occur. Hereby the counterfeiter has to undertake a significant higher effort inorder to create a plagiarism.

This means:The more difficult and complex it is to copy a security feature, the more it is suitable to protect a product. In the graphicalindustry the best way to do product protection is by using the hologram technology, which is not available for potential coun-terfeiters.

Inspired by this challenge our company developed already at the beginning of the nineties the first hologram applicationsystem for continuous forms in order to protect vehicle titles at a European Government Printer.Due to the constantly increasing demand for document security and anti-counterfeiting a cooperation with the worldwideleader of hologram production Leonhard KURZ in Fuerth, Germany, was established in 1995. By combining the experience of both companies we developed the hologram application module RADUS-HP3 forsecurity holograms, being still unrivalled in precision and flexibility although of numerous imitations.

FUTURE-PROOF BY MODULAR EXTENDIBILITY

The base version of the RADUS SV-360 with one hologram application head HP3 covers all requirements in terms of hologram application on sheet-fed astickets, vouchers, coupons etc. but also on security documents like visas, cheques and similar products. Due to its modular construction, the unit can getextended with increasing demand up to 4 hologram application heads, also at a later date. This enables the processing of 4 web-lines across simultane-ously.

Application unit HP3

The hologram application head HP 3 includes the stamping press with the exchangeable tool (die) as well as the foil guidance. This allows the repositio-ning of the complete application unit across the paper by quick fasteners. Therefore an extensive repositioning of the die and the time intensive tracking ofthe foil web omits.

The hologram imprinting heads HP3 are operated electronically/pneumatically and surveyed by the processor control of the SV-360. Because of its highflexibility the HP3 is suitable to apply registered holograms, random pattern holograms and hotfoil logos up to a size of 900mm², further each stamping toolcan be addressed separately. Moreover the powerful stamping unit of the HP3 is also suitable for the application of scratch-off foils.

On the fly

An automatic tension control of the hologram foil as well as a concise guidance and a friction reeling guarantee an exact advance of the holograms. Thefoil positioning is electronically controlled, so a manual adjustment of the photocells is not necessary. A precision adjustment simplifies the setting and ba-lancing of the stamping tools.

Feeding Systems

Depending on the production volume different feeder and delivery devices are available.For smaller and medium quantities a vacuum rotation feeder is being used, pulling sheets up to 520mm x 650mm from the bottom. The capacity of themagazine is naturally limited, in return the device can get refilled during the machine operation. The processed sheets are delivered into a jogger. The accurately stacked sheets may get removed during the machine operation for further finishing.

Vacuum TransportThe vacuum belt with its sophisticated guidance and the high-resolution paper advance provide a precise positioning under theapplication heads. Thus a high repetition accuracy is gained.

Sheet FeederThe vacuum rotation feeder grants a constant and smoothseparation, also of sensitive documents.

Extension StationsIf required the machine can be extended by further working stati-ons, this extension may be done also any later date. Autonomy times

For larger volumes and long autonomic runs a pile feeder and a pile delivery are available with motorized lifting and sinking table of 650mm magazine sizeeach. Due to their table dimensions of 520mm x 750mm also the classical B2 sheet is supported. As the system may get extended up to 4 hologram heads, both pile feeder and pile stacker may get retrofitted any time.

Working process

After the separation and checking for double sheets, the sheet is being pulled towards a zero line in the alignment station and then transferred to the vacuumtransport of the application station. In the application station one or two hologram heads may be installed. The sheet is being transported underneath thehologram heads and gets stopped at the set position, then the stamping is performed. The operator defines whether one or both heads execute an applica-tion at that position. After the stamping process the sheet is being transported to the next application position. This allows the application of up to 10 freeselectable positions on each sheet, e.g. for consecutively arranged cheques.The completed sheet is being transported into the stacker while the next sheet is already aligned at the application station in order to grant a continuous pro-duction without non-operation periods.

Options

If required a second application station with one or two hologram application heads may get add to the system. With then up to 4 hologram heads it is possi-ble to process sheets with smaller product sizes as tickets and coupons in up to 4 lines across the sheet. In order to support the flexibility of a modern secu-rity printer it is also possible to attach a tractor system for the processing of continuous forms. Interchanging between both systems can be done by the operatorwithin a few minutes.
