FOREWORD
One of the rt,sponsibilities of those oonoerned with the establishment (or
expansion) of institutions for agricultural education and training in developingcountries As the adequate provision of textbooks and training materials.
It is almost platitudinous, whether we are speaking of Africa or elsewhere, to
state that textbooks, journals, etc. are essential to effective tuition and that a
properly organised library is indispensable to serious study. Yet the attention
given to these matters in planning new institutions and the resources devoted thereto
are too often totally inadequate:
The Agricultural Education Branoh of FAO is involved in this question in two
ways. First, it seeks to stimulate the preparation of textbooks and manuals aboutsubjects which are badly catered for at present (or not catered for at all) in
relation to the particular environment - physical, economio or social - in which
tuition is taking place. Secondly, FAO is often called upon to offer guidanceto institutions establishing new libraries by suggesting books, manuals and
periodicals whtoh can form the nucleus of such libraries. Hence this select list
of textbooks, manuals and periedioale has been prepared for general distribution.
Its compilation is the work of the agricultural education advisers in Africa,
in oonsmltation with the teaching staffs of African agricultural education and
training institutions. Valuable contributions have also been made by thepersonnel of the FAO Library, members of the Teohnioal Divisions in FAO, byMiss R.N.J. Edwal.des and particularly by the Consultant Mrs. J. Lancaster-Jones.
The list is not an exhaustive one. Suggestions for additions or amendments
to the information in _this document, will be much appreciated and will Se made use of
for the improvement of future editions. It is planned to issue a comparable list
in the French language in due course.

. The list of bopka and pamphlets on the agrioultural soienoes and relatedsubjeots is olaasified in broad groups with the items arranged in alphabeticalorder of the authors' names within eaoh group. The grouping follows the orderof the Universal Deoimal Classification (U.D.C.). Each item begins vith the author.or authors' name(s), followed. bi.the title of the work, the plaoe of publioation, the publisher's name, the dateof publioation, the price and a grading symbolindtoating advanoed or intermediate standard. When no author's name appears tietitle is preceded by ... (3 dots).
A list of perIodloals covering the agrioultural soleness is also included. This 16 arranged by the oountry of origin.
To assist is ordering and identifying the Woke. and periodicals lists of therelnoipal Amerioanr United Kingdomsnciother publishers 9f books and periodicals inthe English language haVe been added, with the addresses to whioh orders should besent.
To faollitate the tracing of books an elphabetioal index of authors' names hasbeen oompiled.
Books should be ordered through the looal book-seller wherever possible. This makes it easier to deal with any queries which arise. The name of the author, full title of the book, publisher's name and date of publioation must be included. It is wide to add the price but it will be realised that as prices are alwaysrising that given in the lint may no longer be valid. For periodioals the name ofthe journal and that of the publisher must be used on the order.

NOTES FOR LIBRARY ASSISTANTS
If a book is to be of any use in a library it must be easy to find. Somereaders may ask "Have you a book by, say, White"? Whilst others may say "Whathave you on traotors"?. In order to provide the answer to the first kihd ofquestion it is necessary to have a catalogue,, arranged alphabetically by author'sname (author catalogue). For the second, another catalogue, arranged )y subjeet,is needed, similar Lt) the list of books in this publication (subject catalogue). As the library is always growing, these catalogues must be able to take inadditions and put them in their proper place, that is, in the'correot alphabeticalorder in the Author Catalogue and the correct subject group in the Subjeot Catalogue. Thus catalogues on cards, one card to each item, are needed. Cards for each typeof catalogue should measure 5" x 3" as this is the Standard size for librarycatalogue cards. If cards are difficult to obtain, clips of paper, out to thissize can be used instead. The details of the book to be given on each card, whether for the Author or for the Subject catalogue are' Author's name, title ofwork, place of publication, date, size in centimetre°, number of pages, number ofplates and illustrations. If the book contains extensive bibliographies theyshould be mentioned in a note.
Specimen entry. The spacing should be followed as it is in use in many libraries.

Gardening
1ACMILLAN,
Tropical planting and gardening. 5th edition.London, Macmillan 1943. 23 x 20. pp. 568.
Where the book is by more than. 1 author the second nave (of two) should begiven at the top, eg. EDWARDS, D.C. and BOGDAN, J.V. If there are more than 2authors the words and others should be added after the first author's name as in thelist in this publication. When 2 authors only are given, as withEdwards andBogdan, a cross reference should be made
BOGDAN, J.V.Important grassland plants of Kenya. Ay,
D.C. Edwards and J.V. Bogdan. 1957.See Edwards, D.C. and Bogdan, J.V.
and filed under B in the author catalogue.

An exact copy of the complete entry, with the aubjeot indioated at the topright hand corner should be filed under the subjeot. Thus for the specimen entry1 card would be filed in the Author catalogue under M and one in the Subjectcatalogue under Gardening. The cards should be filed in drawers and guide cardsshould be used to divide them into convenient groups. For the Author catalogueShore should be a guide card at the beginning of each batch of cards beginningwith the same letter.

Periodicals, which should probably be catalogued under their titles are alsoprobably test listed in a separate seotion of the Author catalogue but the duplicateentry cards for the Subject catalogue should be filed at the end of the cards for thc
books on a particular subject, i.e. periodicals on tropical agriculture shouldfollow the books on that subjact.
Drawers to hold the 5" x 3" cards could easily be made locally.
