Introduction
Agriculture is important to all of us. It affects us di-rectly because it provides us with food, clothing, andshelter. Indirectly, it makes a major contribution to theeconomy of our Nation and to international trade. Butbecause most of us today live in cities or suburban ar-eas, we rarely understand how important agriculture is.
Farm representatives and educators asked the U.S. De=partment of Agriculture (USDA) to help with this prob-tern, and this Resource Guide to Educational MaterialsAbout Agriculture is designed to do just that. The Guidewas developed with the help of a task _force consistingof representatives from farm organizations, commoditygroups, farm women's organizationS, State departmentSof agriculture, and education;
To develop this guide; we contacted more than 200 orga-nilations and publishers. Ale asked them_ what materialsthey were producing that would help regular classroomteachers,grades K-12, incorporate more inforinationabout agriculture into their teaching.The materials welearned abOut are described in thiS Guide.
Some of these materials have been developed Specifi=cally for classroom use. A larger percentage, however,are general informatidnal materials that teachers canuse as sources to create their own materials or activi-ties that will fit the needs of their own classrooms. TheGuide is divided into four sections: print, audiovisualsand kits, collectiona, and resource guides. Within eachsection we have given information about individualteaching materials of that type. Each item lists the title,publisher/producer, grade level, format (booklet or film,for example), a description of the contents, the agricul-tural concepts it teaches, price, and ordering informa-tion; Except for some editing to conserve space or forconsistency, the information is exactly as provided bythe producer.
The agricultural concepts given in each listing will helpteachers identify what subject matter and major ideaseach title in the ResourceGuide can help them teach.These concepts are:
1. Agriculture and history. Agriculture issues orevents as major influences- inhuman history_from making_possible the first settled societiesto current world food issues.
2. The geography of agriculture. What grows whereand why.
3 Agriculture and technology. How technology andspecialization have changed American agricul-ture in the last 100 years.
4. The economics of agriculture. How the agricul-ture sector works and the relationship of U.S.
agriculture to the rest of the economy. Effects ofsupply and demand; how prices are set; changinginteractions of the factors of production, farmingas a business, agribusiness:
Agriculture and the world: World food populationand distribution and its relationship to Americanagriculture.
6. Careers: Careers now and in the future:
Major policy issues. Land use; conservation;chemicals, government interaction with agricul-ture, world food supplies for the future, other is-sues.
For easy reference, all_materials in the Guide are listedaccording to the concepts they cover in a special sec-tion at the end of this publication.
Teaching materials included in the Guide are those thatare primarily about agriculture and related issues. Mate-rials that arelarg_ely concerned with nutrition, foodpreparation (recipes), promotional information, or buy-ing advice on food and fiber are not included becauseriany other resource_ guides already list such materials.Beyond determining that the teaching materials fit thissubject-matter criteria, we have not attempted to evalu-ate them. Inclusion in this Guide does not mean en-dorsement by USDA. Our purpose in creating the Guideis to assemble information on a wide selection of mate-rials so that teachers can decide for themselves whatwill be useful in their classrooms:
We plan to update this Resource Guide annually. We wil!appreciate your suggestions on materials to be includedin future editions:
