INTRODUCTION TO THE FIFTH EDITION
Information about the institutions and organizations listed in this directory wascompiled from a number of sources. Criteria for selection were ar. institution'sinvolvement in organic, alternative, or sustainable agriculture, and its focus oneducation, training or provision of information. Scope of coverage is limited to theUnited States, with a few entries from Canada. Inclusion of an organization in thisdirectory does not imply a recommendation by the Alternative Farming SystemsInformation Center (AFSIC).
AFSIC is only one of the information centers at the National Agricultural Library(NAL) that provide in-depth coverage of specific subject areas relating to the food andagricultural sciences. AFSIC focuses on alternative farming systems that aim atmaintaining agricultural productivity and profitability, while protecting naturalresources, especially sustainable, low-input, regenerative, biodynamic or organicfarming and gardening. The Center specializes in information relating to USDA'sSustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program.
Each listing in this updated edition of 'The Directory" has been verified with theorganization. Our thanks to all those who contributed to its compilation.
Jane Potter Gates, Assistant Coordinator of the Alternative Farming SystemsInformation Center, had significant assistance in the preparation of this edition fromMichael Cassady, a volunteer at the Center. This assistance is gratefullyacknowledged.
