Staff members should also. read carefully the critical com-

ments on the content of the Daily'Trojan that die posted on tpe cityroom bulletin board. This is oneof our'prinelpal means of whatindustry calls quality control. Inthis way staff me,.nbers becomeaware of nur errors and Short-comingsso that they may beavoided in the future, to the endof steadily improving the news-paper. Attention to thesecritiques is a required part ofthe instruction in the reportingand news editing courses.

Reader Comes First.

REPORTING

Reporters are expected to' keep their eyes and ears openat ail, times k for story pos-sibilities.The competent report-

Tire competent reporter askshis news source questions aboutevery aspect of the subject athand, and returns with aforeinformation than he will put inthe story. This gives him the,background necessary to

Tests for HeadlinesTwo tests may be applied to

judge a headline. One is that aheadline should be easily

. expandable (like a telegram)into an ordinary sentence bysupplying nonessential words,such as adiclps.

The only way to prevent errorsand inconsistencies-A, cutlinesis for the writer to have fullknowledge of the story the pic-ture accroMpanies,, Preferably,cutlines should be done by thewriter of the story. If this is notfeasible, the writer of the cut-lines must rmi the accompany-ing story. Errors in cutlinetoften result when they are writ-ten in the office after the accom-panyincopy has been sent tocomposition, and the informa-tion available about the pictdreis sketchy and inadequate.

A reporter should be sent outwith a photographer on everyassignment to get the identifica-tion of the people in the picture.The reporter should then writethe cutlines, with the assistanceas necessary of 2. copyreader oreditor. If a storyraccoMpa'niesthe picture,,breferably thereporter writing the story shouldget the-identifications. Thereporter is responsible for thecorrect spelling and correctsequence of the names. Picturesattract a great deal of attention;and accuracy here is of theutmost importance.

Ishotographers not accom-panied by reporters must beintructed to get full qnd correctidentifications of the people inthe pictures they take.

Photographers should beinstricted NOT TO REVERSEpictures when making pririts.This leads to reversing the Iden.tiftcations, which usually Prenoted down when the picture istaken. Every print must beexamined by a responsibleeditor before the plate is madeto ensure that. the order of theidentifications in the cutlines iscorrect,'
