WRITING A THESIS

• Make sure you fully understand the question before you devise your thesis.

• Make sure your thesis actually answers the question asked.

• Your thesis should clearly state, in a full sentence what you will be arguing.

• The thesis should get its own sentence, it shouldn’t be forced to share with all of your reasons.

HOW TO CITE

• From a multi-page document• “This is a quote” (Frattaroli 5).

• From a single page document• “This is also a quote” (Frattaroli).

• For the Documents on this assignment use the year for clarification.• “Once upon a time there was a quote” (Frattaroli 2015)

• Make sure you are quoting from the document itself and not from an explanation of the document.

• Use at least one quotation in each body paragraph

SIX STEPS CONTINUED

• Quote/Citation• Don’t just pick a random quote, make sure it really represents the point you’re making.

• Analysis• Extra important when working with complicated quotes. It should not only explain what the quote means, but also why it supports your arguments.

• Tie Back• The most often forgotten step. It should connect your ideas back to your topic sentence.

USING PRIMARY SOURCES• Make sure your quote actually supports

what you’re saying and isn’t just jammed in there so that you have a quote.

• Use the documents that you have clearest understanding of.

• You can quote from sources that disagree with you, if you explain why they’re wrong.

• Make sure you are quoting form the primary source- not from an explanation of that source.

• Make sure to quote and reference a variety of sources.
