This Base Line Research Survey was conducted during the Spring of 1973, priorto the implementation of the State Department of Educatioh's Substance AbuseProgram. A comprehensive questionnaire was administered to a Statewide sampleof students in grades four, seven; ten and twelve. The results were analyzed todetermine the extent of the factual and attitudinal information about alcohol andother drugs among South Carolina public school 'children. The report wassponsored by the South Carolta State Department of Education and the SouthCarolina State Plan Interagency Committee on Alcohol Abuse and AlCoholism.

These reports contain the test results of the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills.(CTBS), Form S and thkShort Form Test of Academic Aptitude (SFTAA), whichwere administered in October each year to selected fourth, seventh, ninth, andeleventh grade students in South Carolina. Among the sub-test scores derivedfrom the CTBS are those for Reading, Language, Mathematics, Reference.Skills,Science and Social Studies; also reported is a Battery Total score yvhtich representsa combination of the Reading, Language, and Mathematics sub-tests. There areseveral' sets of figures which show, in addition to other profiles, the percentage ofstudents placed in each Of the four quarters of the national normative distributionas well as the p,ircentages iri the four national quarters for the diiStrict with thebest performing students and the district with the most poorly performingstudents.
