WELCOME TO [DEEP BREATH] THE DOCTOR WHONIVERSE FAN MAGAZINE Hello there - and welcome to the Doctor Whoniverse Fan Magazine, or DWFN for short. Yes, the name has been changed. Again. This time it’s (hopefully) here to stay! After a lot of hard thinking (honestly) it’s been decided to merge the two incarna-tions of this publication together to create this, truly semi-canonical, semi- real life, semi- skimmed. So you get the best of both worlds, with the TV series we all know and love, and the (absurd) goings-on because of it. Take the following page. It contains info about the actual series of Who on the tel-lybox but after that is a bit of the fan world as well! Basically, it’s the stuff that you, a fan, needs to know. So sit back, relax, and enjoy...

NEWS

The TARDIS trio’s reaction to the news that the series is coming soon...

AIRDATE REVEALED A date of the 27th August has been announced BBC showings of the first episode of the second half of Series Six of Doctor Who. This was announced on the 16th August, though it was in-creasingly likely already as a trailer shown in the USA announced this as the date of broadcast there, and the fact that a preview screening is set for the day before. This means that, unless the Americans get it before licence fee payers, the episode will be broadcast on the same day. This date would mean an overlap of Doctor Who and Torchwood, as the latter will con-tinue running until the autumn. In addition, October will probably see the start the final series The Sarah Jane Adventures, which only comprises of six episodes after star Elisabeth Sladen’s passing. The annual Christmas special of Who will as is traditional premiere on BBC 1 on 25th De-cember however no further details are availiable at this point.

ACTION FIGURES REVEALED EXCITING NEW TRAILER! WEEPING ANGELS RETURN!

Character Options has an-nounced its new wave of Series Six figures.

BBC America and the BBC have started broadcasting and ad for the new series.

The trailer confirms an old enemy’s appearance...

Page 4: Doctor Whoniverse Fan Magazine: Issue 4

WEEPING ANGELS RETURN The new trailer has con-firmed that one old foe is back - the Weeping Angels, seen previously in Series Three and Five, will be back before 2011 is out. More news as it comes out.

MERCHANDISE NEWS Character Options has re-vealed its latest range of action figure toys based on Doctor Who. They include Uncle and Idris from The Doctor’s Wife, the Doctor in a straightjacket and two varients of a silent (mouth open and closed). They will be on sale shortly.

PART TWO TRAILER The BBC and BBC America have simultaneously started airing a new trailer for episodes 8 to 13 of Se-ries Six. Highlights include the airdate, the Silents, Weeping Angels, Hitler, Churchill and others. It can been seen at www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho for UK residents.

So why does America get the airdate before the UK?

Partly it’s because that’s what happens in America. The US has

always announced airdates weeks before broadcast. Accordingly, the

BBC has always waited until the Radio Times or, occasionally, just be-

fore it. Partly it’s because of the ratings. The BBC America broadcast of

The Impossible Astronaut smashed records with its score of 1.3 million

viewers, whereas BBC One gathered over 6 million. Publicising the air-

date so far in advance helps gain viewing figures.

But ultimately, it’s not so bad knowing about the date for broad-

cast a week in advance, is it?

Script Crash Tony Coburn, aka timelordfromhell, and his friends have put together a hilarious comedy spoof of the Tenth/Fifth Doctor meeting Time Crash and uploaded it. Stand by for lots of jokes about celery, apples, and Christopher Eccleston. The acting and jokes are extraor-dinary and there are some great imper-sonations of Tennant, Davison and one other...here’s one crash that is a suc-cess! Search YouTube for time crash spoof

The Ten Doctors A four-part (only three currently available) fan film painstakingly edited together frame-by-frame brings together all of the Doctor’s incarnations (well, almost) to fight in a new epic adventure with touches of the Three and Five Doctors. One of the very best amateur videos on the internet. Search YouTube for babelcolour ten Doctors.

The Big Bang 2 Were you confused by the Series Five episode The Big Bang? You’re not alone. In fact, one of the most famous YouTu-bers has created a detailed and explana-tion - in song. Charlie McDonnell, other-wise know as charlieissocoollike has put together this informative and strangely catchy song which can also be played, alongside the rest of his band’s second album, on his website www.charliemcdonnell.com. The song moves along at great pace and the words are occasionally in-distinguishable however I feel this just makes a great video! A RADICAL REDSESIGN OF THE CYBERMEN

WAS TO FEATURE.

There have been many different variants on the Daleks from throughout the Whoniverse. However, one of these is definitely more popular, and more for-midable, than the rest. Dalek Storm was an idea developed by the Doctor Who production team in the mid-nineties, when the idea of resurrecting the show as a oneto-video movie for the thirtieth anniversary were bandied around. The com-memorative episode would have involved a creature that stopped the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) from falling from the Pharos Project, therefore creating a ‘Dark Dimension’. The special would feature the redesigned Cybermen as well as this special weapons Dalek. However, a series of events and changes at the BBC prevented this from happening. The idea remained in just a few concept drawings and was largely forgotten. However, not by one. www.projectdalek.co.uk user Mechmaster dis-covered the concepts and turned it into a popular CGI model, which can be viewed also on his website www.mechmaster.co.uk. He experimented with several colour schemes on this ‘Dark Dimension Special Weapons Dalek’ (DDSWD), showing them on Project Dalek. Shortly after this, the images came to the attention of Dalek builder veteran Alan Clark who was looking for a new project. He had already built a bronze 2005 Dalek (Maxx) and a 2008 supreme (‘the Big Red Supreme’) , as well as more, so decided on this as his next build. He worked out a design and began work. Work began on 29th September 2007, building cardboard domes. However, he realised that this would not work, akin to the other designs he tried, so went about making a new one from MDF and filler. Over the course of about a month he built up the ‘skirt’ and ‘shoulders’, including a pulsing light in between the two huge gunboxes. The discussion then came up over which colour this Dalek should be - after discussion with Mechmaster, Clark

chose a colour scheme that would fit. The animator then altered his model to the same grey - silvery texture and both were de-lighted. The builder took a fourbefore resuming work in March the next

The builder took a four-month break before resuming work in March the next

year. He worked on the gun sections, with mock-up guns to stand in for the water canons that this build would eventually have. He added a bright blue light underneath the machine to infer that it was constantly flying, an effect which turned out quite well. The fender, which turned out to be nearly as tall as a normal Dalek, was attached as well as a quickly blinking eyeball, with apparently 1300 combinations of light and colour. By the 25th May, the build was nearly complete. Christened, STORM, all he would need was a paint job. The hemispheres were stuck onto the skirt section and painting began in June. Alan Clark and his assistants had been keeping the build pretty secret - or, at least, the appearance of the build. However, on the 21st June 2008, it was decided that STORM was finished and images of the fully painted beast were revealed on Project Dalek for the first time. A STORM fan film is now on the way. Trailers can be viewed on You-Tube. The thread has earned itself ‘sticky’ status on Project Dalek. So con-cludes our look at Dalek STORM, the Specialist Tactical Operations Radio-active Mutant. STORM also travels around (when a big enough truck can be found!) appearing at conventions and other events which are on the official Facebook page and wwwdalekstorm.com.

I would love to bring this to life in a full size build... do you have any measurements for it.... it would be a long hard slog to do it...and could take some time.. but i would be willing to give it a go... if you didn't mind that is....please I need a challenge..... - Alan Clark’s original pitch to Mechmaster

Yesterday British tabloid The Sun offered an informative, insightful, objective, and fascinating analysis of something incredibly important. Or not. April Fools! Instead, "reporting" on some Doctor Who casting, The Sun tossed around a couple of random puns interjected with relevant but already old pic-tures from the BBC trailer. ~Life, Doctor Who and Combom

What do the eyepatches mean? I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the Viking warrior with the eyepatch on is Odin from Norse mythol-ogy, that he's an alien of some sort, and that both River and Kovarian at different times have worn his eyepatch, which is some techno-thingy to allow the wearer to see everything at once or something (a power commonly at-tributed to Odin). -liminalD Could the eye-patch be some kind of defence against for-getting the Silent’s when you look away from them? Could it be as simple as a display that constantly shows a picture of a Silent on the inside so that the wearer is al-ways looking at a Silent? -Doctor Who Spoilers The eye-patch is wearing the people. What if the "eye-patch" is actually a parasitic organism that attaches itself to the face and takes control of the brain via the optic nerve? -MinkeytheDog since there are no less than three characters in the trailer wearing the eye patch the first thing that came to my mind was that it was used as some sort of mind control. -Medan74

REVIEW: THE END OF THE WORLD

around the universe in fifty years

After last week’s contemporary setting, you would be forgiven for thinking that this ‘new’ show Doctor Who was sci-fi set in that location. A round of applause, then, for Russell T Davies who extinguishes all accusations with a tale of a spaceship watching Earth’s last mo-ments. It’s strangely touching to see it burning up on the last day. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The episode starts off with a bit of explanation - such as the ‘classic earth’ bit and the fact the only the rich are able to see this historic event. These show that whilst the set-ting for this is futuristic and exciting, some things really do never change. Then the aliens turn up! And turn up they do, with the Moxx of Balhooon. Lady Cassandra and Jabe the Tree some highlights. And of course the Face of Boe himself! Which is all good, until someone lets a few robotic spiders loose on the ship. In a moment of embarrassment for the ship’s security, the spider touches a button which lets the sun in. The aliens’ reactions are played out realistically, with the Doctor’s guilt of letting Rose die like this really making an impact. Obviously, the real culprit of the whole sorry affair is Cassandra, who reveals herself only too late. The Doctor is set the task of reaching the off-switch - which, naturally, is hidden behind a set of quickly rotating fans. Jabe’s self-sacrifice is mov-ing, and the following action sequence is exciting, though a tad unrealistic. The switch is found, Rose’s life is narrowly saved, and everyone is happy. However, the Earth has died, and nobody was there to see it. All in all, an exciting romp which has its faults, but it’s impossible not to enjoy.
