Page 12: Doctor Who Vortex: 2008

DAVID TENNANT was recently voted the coolest person on TV by Radio Times, but just...

WHY IS THE DOCTOR

SO COOL?

THE BRAINY SPECS...The Doctor doesn't even need glasses, he only wears them because he thinks they make him look brainy. The 5th Doctor had some too. In real life David Tennant wears contact lenses.

THE TARDISThe TARDIS is the Doctor's time and space machine. TARDIS stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. It is virtually Indestructable and it used to be able to disguise itself to it's surroundings but the mechanism got stuck and it remains a 1950s Police Box. Oh, and it's bigger on the inside!!!

REGENERATIONLiterally, the Doctor can become a new man. It's the time lords way of cheating death... The Doctor has changed his face 10 times!

Page 13: Doctor Who Vortex: 2008

SONIC SCREWDRIVERThe Doctor's trusty screwdriver can get him out of many tricky situations. It can open just about any door apart from a dead-lock seal or wood. It can also scan brain waves, rejoin barbed wires and can also get money out of a cash machine!! If thats not cool... what is?

THE SHOESThe Doctor wears some cool clothes, none cooler than his shoes.... they're AWESOME!!! Matching smart and casual this cements the Doctor as a style icon!!

FRIENDS...What's cooler than friends? The Doctor has friends everywhere and in 2008 they all met up to help the Doctor take earth home. His memorable companions include his granddaughter Susan and her two school teachers to reporter Sarah Jane Smith and his most recent friends Martha, Rose and Donna!!

DALEK BEST BITSThe Daleks are almost indestructible. Their armour is impenetrable – bullets melt before making it to them – and they have one of the most powerful guns in the universe.

The Dalek's weak spot is their single eye – one shot at that will blind them. Watch out though because a blind Dalek is still dangerous and will shoot randomly about.

exterminate!

They were once the butt of all the jokes as the Daleks' lack of legs meant that for years stairs baffled them. But when they learnt to fly it meant that nothing could stop them.

Page 19: Doctor Who Vortex: 2008

The Emperor Dalek was the God of all Daleks. At over 18 foot tall this was the most mighty of the Daleks. The Emperor was guarded by 4 black-topped Daleks. He met his end when along with the rest of the Daleks, he had the power of the Time Vortex poured into him.

The Daleks can only be killed by extreme temperature, their own weapons or by self destruct.

The Daleks appeared in the second Doctor Who story originally called The Mutants.

The robot presenter of the Weakest Link was created by the Daleks who were in charge of the Game Station. But the Doctor and Captain Jack and adjusted Anne to kill the Daleks with her disintegration beam. However, she met her end at the end of the Daleks after taking out three of them. However PLOT HOLE WARNING: The disintegration beam turned out to be only a teleport so it was more a case of “out of sight and out of mind.”

Dalek Sec MutantEpisodes: Daleks in Manhattan/ Evolution of the Daleks (2007)

Info: Dalek Sec was the leader of the Cult of Skaro – it was their purpose to think as the enemy and so Sec sacrificed himself to become the next generation of Dalek. Part Human & Part Dalek, he mixed his DNA with Mr Diegoras (albeit forceably) and the hybrid was born. However the other three Daleks did not trust their leader – especially when he collaborated with the Doctor – and shot him.

FACT: The Actor who played Sec had to sit through 4 hours of make up to get all the prosthetics to become the one-eyed tentacled mutant.

ALL ABOUT...THE VOYAGE OF

THE DAMNED

The Titanic was crashing to earth on the instruction of Mr Max Capricorn, owner of Capricorn Cruiseliners. The company had failed so Max ordered the ship to be crashed into earth, thus he could get the board of directors executed for criminal negelegence while it would appear he had perished on the ship – but he would have survived the crash due to his shielding.

The Titanic crashed into the TARDIS as the Doctor had his shields down – as he was repairing the TARDIS after the Master had butchered it into a paradox machine.

books are just as popular today as they were then

and continue to be re-told in countless TV and movie adaptations.

Episode: The Unicorn and the Wasp

Christie's most famous works are the detective

characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

Agatha actually wrote a book called “The Unicorn and the Wasp”, whether it is based on her adventures with the Doctor and a giant

shape changing wasp – we shall never know.

ALL ABOUT...The Hoix

We know very little about this vicious monster. We first saw the Doctor facing up with one at the start of “Love and Monsters.” The Hoix love nothing more than eating which explains why the Doctor tries to tempt it with a pork chop.

The Hoix returned in an episode of Torchwood where Owen tries to tempt it with a pack of cigarettes

Originally the Hoix had no name until Russel T. Davies thought up the name at the last minute

Epic

The Doctor, Rose and Cpt. Jack are forced into taking part in some sadistic game show aboard the Game Station previously known as Satellite 5. After Rose is 'killed' Jack and the Doctor storm up to Floor 500 where the controller is... but she's not really in control, her masters are the Daleks, and they've got Rose. One rescue later, the Doctor knows he's beat so he sends Rose home but she's having none of that! Rose takes the power of the heart of the TARDIS into her mind, flies to the Doctor's rescue, defeats all the Daleks and even brings Jack back to life making him immortal. But the power is killing her so he takes the power off her making himself regenerate in the process.

Daleks vs. Cybermen... the ultimate battle Whovians had been waiting years for and when the parallel universe Cybermen broke through the void(ironically following the Daleks making that same trip in the Void sphere along with their Genesis Ark – containing millions of Daleks. The Cybermen ask for an alliance as “together they could up grade the universe.” However the Daleks refuse, thus declaring war. The only way to stop the slaughter of everything on Earth is to open up the void sucking all Daleks and Cybermen into the space between the universes, some people call it hell. Unfortunately Rose is also dragged along with them and she's apart from the Doctor for ever – trapped on parallel Earth.

Page 33: Doctor Who Vortex: 2008

3. UTOPIA/ THE SOUND OF DRUMS/ THE LAST OF THE TIMELORDS

2. THE VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED

On Utopia, the Master nicks the TARDIS but Captain Jack, Martha and the Doctor are chasing behind with Jack's vortex manipulator. Back on Earth he's become the Prime Minister – Harry Saxon and soon he and his metal friends The Toclafane (who turn out to be the mutated Utopians) have decimated the population and enslaved the planet. The Master renders the Doctor helpless, turning him into his 900 year old self and Jack's in chains so it's up to Martha to trek the world for a whole year to spread the word of the Doctor. In the end it's Harry's wife who proves his downfall shooting him and leaving him dead.

The TARDIS and the Titanic have had a crash and rather than swapping insurance details, the Doctor goes for a look on the ship. In a Christmas episode that's ten minutes short of a movie and with an all star cast led by Kylie Minouge, the Titanic was actually a spaceship from the planet Sto based on the original ship. However the ship is soon in trouble thanks to it's evil owner Max Capricorn. Astrid sacrifices herself to end Max's plan. But the ship is still on a collision course so it's up to the Doctor to steer it from hitting Buckingham Palace.

1. THE STOLEN EARTH/JOURNEY'S END

This story was essentially the beginning of the end of David Tennant and Co. It's the last ever series finale of David Tennant's era. This is the last time we'll properly see Jack, Martha, Donna, Mickey, Jackie, Sarah-Jane and more importantly Rose. She's back which is bad, this means that Rose has somehow found a way between the two universes. Now, while this means that the Doctor will see Rose again, it does mean that it could mean the end of the universe. And just to add even more trouble, the Daleks have stolen the earth and hidden it a second out of kilter with the rest of the universe. The Daleks are planning to use the stolen planets as a Reality Bomb. In the end it's up to the Doctor/Donna to defeat the Daleks, with the Doctor's mind and her personality – she quickly finds a way to get the planets home, but it's the other half of the timelord mulitiplication – the human Doctor who commits genocide killing every last Dalek. But Earth is left behind, so it's up to the Doctor to get it home, with a little help from his friends. Sarah Jane, Mickey, Jack and Martha are dropped off on Earth, Jackie, Rose are returned to parallel Earth along with the half-human Doctor who will age along with her. Donna is still part timelord, and it is killing her and if the Doctor doesn't do something she'll burn up and he's forced to be lonely again, returning a memory-wiped Donna back to her family.

to humans with a white communicator ball in their hands.

The Ood are born with a secondary brain which they hold in their hands, making them vulnerable. This is replaced with the communicator ball – which then makes them slaves, unable to disobey orders. This also makes them trusting of everyone.

Some people thought that it was unfair that the Ood were subjected to slavery. They set up a campaign called “Friends of the Ood” who worked their way into Ood Operations to sabotage and eventually free the Ood.

Red Eye is a disease that the Ood contract that turns them rabid and the once helpful and trusted servants turn to wild killers. Their eyes turn red and the communicator ball becomes a weapon – electrocuting everyone who gets in their way.

Mr Halpen was the head of Ood Operations and was responsible for the imprisonment of the Ood as slaves.

Sigma knew that if he had to experience his life as an Ood, he would know the error of his ways.

After the Doctor saved the Ood from slavery, the Ood were returned to their snowy home planet: the Ood sphere.
