The doctoral program prepares professionals for future careers in research, academic and clinical settings. In this program, you will acquire both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills needed to work in counselor education programs and to supervise the next generation of counselor educators as they practice their own skills. You will also formulate your own philosophy and approach to the counseling education field. Multicultural competencies in applied clinical settings are emphasized throughout the program. Admission Requirements • A master’s degree in counseling or in a related mental health field requiring a minimum of 48 semester

credit hours equivalent to the master’s degree requirements of the UTSA Counseling program and/or Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)

• A minimum GPA of 3.0 in master’s level courses in counseling or in a related mental health field. • A portfolio consisting of: - A 48-hour master’s degree transcript - For applicants whose native language is not English, a score of at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Three letters of recommendation attesting to academic and personal attributes for success in the program and the potential for contributing to the field of study - A written personal statement/essay describing research interests and purpose for pursuing the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision - Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores no more than five years old - Documented experience in a work environment where counseling was the primary professional emphasis - A professional resume listing prior experiences in the field of Counseling.

PURPOSE OF PROGRAMThis program prepares multi-culturally competent, professional counselors and counselor educators to demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, identity and scholarship for a successful counseling career. Creativity, diversity, and developmental and relational processes are emphasized through relationships with the community, other university programs and students. You will also learn the ethics of the profession and apply your knowledge within multicultural populations.

PROGRAM OPTIONSThis 48-semester hour program offers advanced study and professional development in the fields of community, school, addictions, multicultural, marriage and family, and sports psychology counseling. Classes are held at the downtown campus.

Students may earn credit toward a state-level counseling license to practice in community settings (Licensed Professional Counselor – LPC). Credit may also be earned toward a school counselor endorsement on a teacher’s certificate.

Two years of teaching experience is required at the time the state exam is taken. A thesis option emphasizes the development of research competencies critical to continued graduate-level study.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

A variety of career opportunities is available in the education, non-profit, and federal and private sectors such as: school psychologist, disability services specialist, educational psychologist (education), social worker, juvenile counselor, art/music therapist (non-profit), drug/substance abuse therapist, family and marriage counselor, and human resources specialist (federal and private).
