Overview

To address the dramatically changing landscape of education in the 21st century, which includes advances in technology, in new research on the science of learning, and in the emergence of a private education sector, the JHU School of Education has established an innovative and dynamic distance education option for its existing Doctor of Education (EdD) degree program.

Program Objective

The distance education option is designed to prepare an exceptional corps of educational leaders, both nationally and internationally, who can set a high standard for leadership in education and are equipped to meet the myriad challenges associated with improving K-12 learning outcomes in both public and private educational environments.

Program Requirements

Program requirements include a minimum of 90 graduate credits beyond the bachelor’s degree. • Of these, 36 credit hours of prior coursework at

the master’s level may be accepted as transfer credits from another institution

• A minimum of 54 credits must be completed at JHU

Benchmarks• In addition to successfully completing all

coursework requirements, candidates must also satisfy the following program benchmarks:• Comprehensive Assessments of

Competencies within Problem of Practice Projects and Oral Defense

• Applied Dissertation Proposal and Oral Defense

Comprehensive Assessments• The assessments are in the form of projects

completed during the summers following Years 1 and 2.

• Students will demonstrate mastery of competencies in these written and oral comprehensive assessments, which will serve as indicators of readiness for conducting applied research.

Applied DissertationThe applied dissertation is the final and most significant requirement for the EdD degree. Characteristics of the applied dissertation that make it unique to this program include:• Culmination of independently completed, but closely

interrelated, projects.• Projects are embedded within coursework and distributed

across three years.• Projects focus on a problem of practice within the

organization with which the candidate is affiliated.• Projects possess potential for significant change or impact

within the organization or have implications for policy.

ResidenciesThe program includes two on-campus residencies. The first at the end of the first year (may be completed electronically from a distance). The second at the end of the third year, which will serve as the program’s culmination during which students will defend their dissertation orally.These residencies will allow face-to-face interactions with faculty and other students, as well as time for the oral defense and other activities related to the applied dissertation.

Admission Requirements• A master’s degree with a 3.0 GPA • Official transcripts• A completed application form• A resume • Three letters of recommendations • A personal statement including responses to the following:

• Describe a significant problem of practice  relevant to your current or former work setting.

• Why is this problem important?• Discuss the potential underlying causes and possible solutions.

• A signed Executive Sponsor agreement.  • International students must complete additional requirements .

• For Fall 2013, we anticipate accepting applications between May 15 th and June 1st. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

International ApplicantsIn addition to fulfilling the general admissions requirements,

International Applicants must:

• Submit a passing TOEFL score or TOEFL Waiver Request• Submit a course by course evaluation of their academic

credentials in lieu of transcripts if their degree was earned outside the U.S. (see list of approved credential evaluation agencies).
