    Public conventionA national level convention was held 2 times in a year at various places across thecountry. Over two hundred INSAF members including local NGOs, dalit and adivasiorganizations participated in every programmes.

    The topic of the programmes varied from globalization issues, impact, analysis, issue of

    fundamentalism- communal violence, initiating peace. Programmes are also conducted onpromoting democracy and generating human rights awareness.

    Organizational programmes

    National general bodyA general body of delegates of all INSAF state units, a total of 15 states met every 2years. They elected a national executive committee for a term of 2 years. Besides electionof executive body, the general body also deliberated upon issues and shared their viewsamongst each other.

    The National Executive Committee met and discussed issues, both developmentinterventions and organizational matters. Each member shared about their issues andtheir work. Moreover , the executive body discussed and deliberated upon contextualissues. The executive body then took decision for way forward for programs andimplementations.

    Agencies: SwissAid, Switzerland; HIVOS,Bangalore; Aid-India, USA (2008 - 2012) -ongoing

    These projects centre around promotion of sustainable farm livelihoods including incomesecurity for farm households, and scaling up of ecological agriculture in addition to fightingagainst threats to environmental sustainability, biosafety, farmers rights, and againstcorporate takeover of Indian agriculture and hazardous agricultural technologies likeGMOs, pesticides etc.

    Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture (ASHA)ASHA is a large, nationwide informal network of more than 400 organizations, drawn from20 states of India comprising farmers organizations, consumer groups, womensorganizations, environmental organizations, individual citizens and experts who arecommitted to the cause of sustainable and viable farm livelihoods in rural India andthereby, safe, nutritious, diverse and adequate food for all Indians leading towards goals of

    Kisan Swaraj, i.e. Food, Farmers, Freedom. This was created after a nation-wide bus tourto spread a message of hope and solidarity with farming communities in India called theKisan Swaraj Yatra, in 2010.

    INSAF conducted the following ASHA activities, in accordance with the networks overallplanning and project proposal, even as the networks Secretariat is hosted by INSAF:

    Round Tables and ConsultationsASHA conducted Round Tables and Consultations at state and national level to generate adebate on farm suicides in India, income security for farmers, on proprietary seedtechnologies promoted through public private partnerships, on environmental sustainability

    in agriculture, on green revolution etc. The participants included farmers leaders,

    Agricultural Experts, Scientists, Bureaucrats and Policy Makers, Civil Society Members,Farmers and Parliamentarians.

    Capacity Building WorkshopsASHA organized various Capacity Building Workshops in different parts of India, whichwere attended by Farmers and Front-Line NGO Workers for promoting Ecological

    Agriculture. The various topics covered in the workshops were such as Non-PestidicalManagement (NPM), Organic manures, Inter-cropping, Water conservation, System ofRoot Intensification (SRI), Conservation of Traditional Seeds, etc.

    Seed Conservation workRevival and conservation of traditional seeds were taken up in chosen locations so thatsuch seed can be multiplied and exchanged amongst farmers.

    PublicationsFor information and awareness building ASHA also published booklets from time to time.These included leaflets, reports, press statements, newsletters, etc. on issues such as

    food safety, farmers rights etc.

    Media AdvocacyASHA organized Press Conferences to raise concerns over issues related to farmsuicides, to reach to media, along with sharing results of fact-finding reports etc.

    Research and Fact Finding StudiesASHA is currently being supported by Association for Indias Development (AID India)towards a research study to develop a composite index on productivity and use the sameto measure productivity of organic farms vis--vis equivalent chemical farms.ASHA has also taken up fact finding visits on hybrid maize promotion, green revolution ineastern India, farm suicides etc. and put out reports in the public domain.

    Coalition for a GM-Free IndiaThe Coalition is a broad national network of organizations, scientists, farmer unions andconsumer groups and individuals committed to keep the food and farms in India free ofGenetically-Modified Organisms (GMOs).

    INSAF, as part of the Coalition and housing the Secretariat, conducted and implementedthe following activities.

    Round Tables and ConsultationsCoalition conducted Round Tables and Consultations at state and national level to createan informed debate on the use of GM Technology and its associated risks, especially, withthe focus on Bt Cotton and Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) Bill. Theparticipants include Agricultural Experts, Scientists, Bureaucrats and Policy Makers, CivilSociety Members, Farmers and Parliamentarians.

    PublicationsFor information and awareness building Coalition also published booklets from time totime. These included leaflets, reports, press statements, newsletters, critiques of biotechregulatory frameworks etc.

    geological and environmental impacts, deforestation and influx of outsiders with a severeimpact on the culture and identity of the tribal communities.

    The film demystifies Yazali and its contributions to the Nishi community through extensiveinteraction with the people of Yazali, depicting their daily life and linkages that the valleyforges with their culture, social organization, economy and livelihood.
