To be completed by the candidate. This page records initial meeting(s) with your supervisor to agree your project proposal.

Your first idea for topic/title

Photography - Human Portrait Photography or Animal Portrait Photography

Your first ideas for research and development of your project

As a starting point for my research I could go to the library and find books on Photography that will give me information about the technical side of photography and famous photographers who I could experiment by trying out their styles of Photography when taking my own photographs. I can also use other resources including my own knowledge and the internet. I could also breifly research into Human Portrait Photography and Animal Portrait Photography to help me decide on my topic/titleI will also need to indentify my current level of skills and what I need to do to improve on the technical side like lighting, I may need to look into getting different lenses, research and resources will also give me more ideas on how I can improve on my skills. To be able to finalise on my topic/title for my project I will need to get into contact with the Exotic Pet Refuge in Deeping St James, I will email them to find out if I can visit them to take photographs of their animals if I decided on going through with the Animal Portrait Photography idea which I could then produce a calendar or I could produce a portfoloio along with an accompanying written report.

Your supervisor’s main comments and advice

My supervisor told me to investigate both of my initial ideas and carry out initial research to inform my decision, I need to try and gage my current level of skill as a photographer so I can assess whether I need a better camera/lens and whether I need to imrpove my technique.

Changes, clarifications or additions you have made as a result of your discussion with your supervisor

After my discussion with my supervisor I have settled on 2 topics/titles from my original 3 ideas. I have also taken into consideration of possibly creating a calendar. I have identified that I will either photograph wild animals which give me a wider range and more of a challenge or pet portraits.

Title of the Extended ProjectPresent the topic to be researched in the form of a short statement/question/hypothesis with clear focus.

Animal Portrait Photography

Provide a brief outline, based upon page 5 of this document, of

the researched or activity/task to be carried out and sources to be consulted

Before I next meet with my supervisor I will refine my topic/title, I will email the Exotic Pet Refuge to help me with this decision. I will create a questionnaire and ask a maximum of 10 people to find out where my skills are at now, how I can improve, what they like about my photos and what they don't like. I will find books, internet research and my own knowledge on photography that will help me with my research and I will produce a brief description on Photography, Famous Photographers, the technical side of Photography. I will also provide a brief description on Animal Portrait Photography and Human Portrait Photography and describe how I reached my decision on my title/topic for my project.

the courses of study or area(s) of personal interest to which the topic relates

My topic relates to my personal interest of Photography. This project will also help and set me up for the future if I wanted to go to College or University to study Photography further, and if I wanted to take up a job in Photography this will help for that too. This topic relates to Art and Media , Art; because different people can see photography and take images in different lights, the editing side of it can also be seen as photography and there are art courses out there that involve photography. Media; the technical camera side of it, the editing and the different lighting can all relate to Media as a topic.

your proposed action

Research into Photography (types of photography, photographers, technical side etc…), Email Exotic Pet Refuge, decide on my topic/title, research Human and Animal Portrait Photography, produce a Questionnaire and get it filled out, find books and internet websites that will help me. I will also begin a word document to reference my sources of research, which will also help me in tracking back helpful websites. I will produce a portfolio/calendar and a written report.

Comment below on the feasibility and acceptability of the proposal (project proposal parts A & B) as an Extended Project (specification 1.4)

Centre coordinator’s comments

The title is useful providing a suitable working focus.

The topic provides ample opportunity for the achievement of all assessment objectives and plenty of knowledge based resources are available on this topic. Consideration must be given to the process of acquiring some formal assessment of the photographs and/or evaluation of their success.

Whilst the school may be able to provide certain equipment (via the Media dept) the candidate must remain aware of the cost implications of additional equipment and materials required and ensure that finance is available from an external source to cover all needs before pursuing such activities.

A creative approach, or re-direction of the project title, may be required if the source of animals for photography proves unviable.

The project is both acceptable and feasible within the timescales.

Planning reviewCandidate’s full name Candidate number

Chloe Templeman 7306

To be completed by the candidate. This page records your outline plan at the start of your work.

Outline the next steps in your planned research/initial development

So far I have researched my initial ideas for my project topics to settle and decide upon one topic/title. I have created a questionnaire and identified what I need to do to improve upon my skills during my project my asking people to fill it out for me. I have researched famous photographers and the types of photography. I researched fully into photography including the technical side of photography. I received an email from Exotic Pet Refuge, I am able to photograph their animals however I have to pay £35 which meant I had to really think which topic/title, Human Portrait Photography or Animal Portrait Photography. I decided that I liked the way Sally Anne Thompson saw animal photography especially as she liked doing pet photography with dogs and cats and animal like horses which is what I enjoy doing, I think that I have potential to be able to do this and it gives me a wide variety of options as there are so many different animals from wild animals, to pets to farm animals. My next step is to decide on either making a calendar or create a portfolio of images.

Your supervisor’s main comments and advice

My supervisor told me to make a preliminary visit to the Exotic Pet Refuge and to look at the range of animals and decide on 13 potential portraits. I need to asses the ligthing conditions, safety, accessibility to the refuge, how long it will take me to achieve an image, begin to photograph some animals to get an idea of what it will be like, how the animals react to the camera and how long it takes to get the animal to relax to be able achieve a good quality photograph. I will also need to asses prices and costing of access into the Exotic Pet Refuge and how much it will be to print the calendars and how much I would sell them for.

Changes, clarifications or additions you have made as a result of your discussion with your supervisor and/or the comments from your centre coordinator

I will look into the costing of the calendars to see how much it will cost aswell as prices to access the Exotic Pet Refuge, especially as I may need to visit them more than once which could get quite pricey. After identifying this I will then decide whether I am going to do a portfolio of images ranging from wildlife photography to pet photgraphy or a calendar for the Exotic Pet Refuge.

After investigating when the next open day is 31st March 2013 for The Exotic Pet Refuge which is too late for me to be able to visit the refuge, take photographs, assess the safety and lighting conditions of the area as well as put the calendar together. I also believe that £35 is too expensive for me to be able to carry out what I need to do, especially seeing as I may have to visit the refuge more than once and the printing of the calendar could by quite expsive. So I have decided that I will put together a portfolio of images, it is the more affordable option and I will be able to produce and experiment with a wider variety of animals ranging from pet photography, wildlife photography and farm animal photography and if I have the chance to visit The Exotic Pet Refuge I will definitley take up the opportunity. I have also chosen this option because I believe it will be more achievable and I don't need to rely on the Exotic Pet Refuge to keep in contact with me to be able to complete my project on time.
