Rotary shaft lip-type seals are used to retain fluid in equipment where the differential pressure is relatively low. Typically, the shaft rotates and the housing is stationary, although in some applications the shaft is stationary and the housing rotates. Dynamic sealing is normally the result of a designed interference fit between the shaft and a flexible element incorporated in the seal. Similarly, a designed interference fit between the outside diameter of the seal and the diameter of the housing bore retains the seal and prevents static leakage. Careful storage, handling and proper installation of all seals are necessary to avoid hazards, both prior to and during installation, which would adversely affect service life. The Indian Standard supersedes IS 5129(PT 2):12003/ISO 6194-2:1991 ‘Rotary shaft lip type oil seal Part 2: Vocabulary (Third revision)’. Under the general title ’Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements’,the standard is in five parts, Other parts are following: 1) IS/ISO 6194-1:2007 Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating elastomeric sealing elements- Part 1: Nominal dimensions and tolerances. 2) IS/ISO 6194-3:2009 Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating elastomeric sealing elements-Part 3: Storage, handling and installation [Doc ME 30 (1269)] (Under process). 3) IS/ISO 6194-4:2009 Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating elastomeric sealing elements-Part 4: Performance test procedures [Doc ME 30 (1270)] (Under process). 4) IS/ISO 6194-5:2008 Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating elastomeric sealing elements-Part 5: Identification of visual imperfections [Doc ME 30 (1271)] (Under process).

The text of ISO Standard is to be approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following: a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear, referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’. b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker. The concerned technical committee will review the provisions of the following International Standards referred in this adopted standard and to decide that these are acceptable for use in conjunction with this standard: International Standard Title
