BEWARE OF CAT HATERS!

Dobcross resident Diane Kilburn has had two of her four cats shot with an air rifle. These incidents have been reported to the police and a complaint has been logged. The police are investigating these terrible incidents and Diane wishes to alert other villagers with cats or dogs to be on their guard. This is treated as a criminal offence which could lead to prosecution and a heavy fine. If any other residents have suffered the same upset please can they let the police know, alert the

Dobcross Diary or get in touch with Diane directly. One of Diane’s cats, Peaches, was shot in the face which led to vet’s fees but more importantly could have cost Peaches her life, as the pellet came to rest against her jugular vein. Another of Diane’s cats has also been shot at the back of her head, so whoever is carrying out these cruel acts and vendettas needs to be caught immediately. The whole episode has created upset for the Kilburns and other local

families. If anyone has any information, please contact Saddleworth Police on 0161 856 4525 or dial 101 or contact the editor of the Dobcross Diary.

DOBCROSS MARATHON RUNNERS IN AID OF

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Husband and wife team Ali and Glenys McGregor ran the London Marathon on

Sunday 22 April in aid of the Royal British Legion. Both Ali and Glenys are former senior RAF officers and as such the Royal British Legion is a cause close to both their hearts. Ali was an RAF Regiment officer and saw active service in Northern Ireland, the Gulf War, the Bosnian Civil War and other Middle Eastern locations. Glenys was an Air Traffic Control officer and served in the UK, Germany, the Falkland Islands and other locations around the world. Ali and Glenys are well known in the village as until March they were the landlord and landlady of the Swan Inn. Glenys is also heavily involved in the organisation of the village Whit Friday event. Indeed for the past 7 years she has been the editor, primary writer and publisher of the Dobcross Whit Friday programme. Ali and Glenys have committed to raise £1800 for this very worthy cause.

If you would like to donate or sponsor them in their fundraising efforts then please visit

www.virginmoneygiving.com/alastairmcgregor. Alternatively you can donate cash (any amount) directly to Ali

or Glenys or through the pot in the Swan Inn. You can see the

The DVC (Dobcross Village Community) recently organised a coach trip for Dobcross children to watch the spectacular Disney On Ice production of Princesses & Heroes and for some village residents to spend a few hours in Liverpool shopping and sightseeing. Sixteen children from the village along with parents and grandparents went along to the Disney show as Lucas Hammond, a pupil at Holy Trinity School takes up the story……….

“On Sunday 25th March we all got on the coach to Disney On Ice in Liverpool. We were very excited. We all received a mystery bag. You’ll never guess what was inside. There were sweets, colouring books, felt tips and a card game. That’s what was in the boys’ bag anyway. We had a long journey to Liverpool but the bag kept me happy! We arrived in Liverpool and went to the Liverpool Echo Arena. It was very tall. We sat down and waited

for the show to begin. Suddenly, the lights dimmed and the music started. Tinkerbell whizzed out spreading fairy dust with her sparkling wand. Next in turn was Aladdin. Guards chased him around and around and around. Princes and princesses twirled and twisted together. The Princes lifted the princesses really high. My favourite parts were the stunt pirates and the dragon. The pirates somersaulted into the air then one pirate landed in a chair! The dragon breathed fire onto the ice. Very cleverly the fire went away on the ice. I thought the ice would melt but it didn’t. We all had a great time thanks to Kelly”. (Lucas Hammond Aged 7)

W h a t h a p p e n s o n W h i t F r i d a y ? 9.45 am Dobcross Silver Band and Dobcross Youth Band march from the Band Club on Platt Lane to The Square, up Sandy Lane to the Sandy Lane Community Church to form the main procession back to The Square. Listen out for the Saddleworth ‘anthem’ Hail Smiling Morn. 10.00 am The service is delivered from the terrace of The Swan Inn and crowds gather for hymn singing accompanied by the brass bands, enjoying the village as a rare ‘traffic- free’ zone. This is followed by the Whit Walk to Uppermill lead by the bands. Everyone follows along, as they do from the other Saddleworth villages. 11.00 am There is a joint Saddleworth Churches Songs of Praise on King George Playing Fields in the centre of Uppermill, before the bands lead us back to Dobcross. 12.30 pm All children are welcome to Dobcross School Hall for lunch provided by the Dobcross Whit Friday United Effort funds. 2.00 pm Sports afternoon for all the family on Dobcross Playing Fields. Come along, join in and bring a picnic. 4.30 pm The world famous band contest begins. Each band books in at the Band Club and plays as they march down towards The Square. They then wait their turn to play their contest piece for the adjudicator on Church Fields. The adjudicator is hidden in one of the houses and is only allowed to listen - he cannot see the bands. Fifty or sixty bands are expected to come through the village during the evening. Quite a spectacle! 10.00 pm The last entry is accepted into the contest and when they have played their test piece, they also play ‘The Day Thou Gavest’ (the words are printed in the back of the Dobcross Whit Friday Programme - so you can sing along). The results are then announced at the Band Club.

For a full round up of the day’s events, please be sure to buy your Whit Friday programme (only £2) and help support the event. Programmes are on sale now and available from local pubs & shops or from volunteer programme sellers on the day.

Why not take a look at short videos of the Dobcross Whit Walks on the Dobcross Diary website www.dobx.net ?

Championships. Was it an unfortunate accident or the actions of a jealous rival? Local police have been led a merry dance & need your assistance to

solve the murder. Follow the Trail to solve the clues- you may win a cash prize!”

Holy Trinity Churchyard Ashes Graves Transformation A significant amount of work has been undertaken in the churchyard at Holy Trinity Church over the past eight months, and the improvement is for all to see. A local builder has rebuilt the retaining walls and widened the access path to the Ashes Graves area. The locations of all the tablets, marking the graves, were carefully measured using a string grid before being plotted onto a drawing. The

tablets were then removed and stored thus allowing the ground surface to be improved with 30 tons of topsoil, and approximately 200 square yards of turf. The string grid was re-pegged to enable the tablets to be replaced in their correct locations, before being sunk into the ground to permit the new

turf to be mown easily. A memorial table with flower vases has been set into a corner for relatives or friends to leave floral tributes. The project also included improved rainwater drainage to the north and east of the church, refurbishment of the church gates, new east window floodlights, an English yew hedge around the northern perimeter, and a new lead-free water main. Altogether a splendid effort, mostly a lot of hard work by a team of volunteers from the congregation. The churchyard, sitting in a conservation area, is an important part of our local heritage. It is rich in historical, natural, and artistic interest. Preservation of its character and beauty within our local environment is essential. Contributions to support its preservation are very welcome, either in the form of a single or a small regular donation. For more information, please contact Paul Wooding on [email protected] or 01457 878116. The project was funded by money donated and raised by “The Friends of Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross” and also by a donation from Dobcross Village Community. Grateful thanks are due to all who have contributed.

One Sunday morning, many years ago, my husband came in from the garden to say that a small brown bird with a red forehead had found its way into the greenhouse. We shepherded it gently out through a window, and then we had to go and find our bird book to look it up. It was the first time we had seen a lesser redpoll. In retrospect, it must have been a young bird or a female, because the adult males have strikingly bright crimson breasts as well as the red forehead. They are related to linnets, but smaller. Redpolls feed mainly on the seeds of trees like birch or

alder, also plants like dandelions, sorrel and other countryside

weeds. In recent years they have learned to come to garden

feeders for sunflower hearts. They nest in

colonies in coniferous woodland, and

the plantations around Saddleworth

Golf Course are a favourite site.

After breeding, the birds roam

around the country in flocks

looking for food, but at this time

of year, many of them return to

the same breeding site. They

can often be identified when

they fly overhead, because

they make a ‘churring’

flight call.

Report on the Dobcross Band Club’s AGM The AGM of Dobcross Band Social Club was held on 19 April at the club. The meeting was attended by around 30 members. The club's 2011 accounts were presented to the meeting by the club's auditor Mr Alan Brooks of Morris Gregory. The club had celebrated its centenary at its current premises at Platt Lane during 2011 and the accounts demonstrated how all the members had pulled together to make it a successful year. It was hoped that this enthusiasm and commitment would be continued into 2012 and beyond to help the club through these difficult economic times. The refinancing of the club's brewery loans was briefly discussed. The priorities are to make the club debt-free by getting rid of brewery charges and to fund essential repairs to the club’s roof. The Dobcross Band Club Capital Fund has now been created and members have been depositing monies into the Fund supported by a loan agreement form. The form states the Fund will secure the removal of legal changes held by the brewery over freehold land owned by the club, and trustees will subsequently secure a legal charge on the land. The committee reported that the plans were well advanced and on target. Discussions with the brewery were now taking place. The Fund remains open to any other members who wish to take part.

If anyone would like any more details about the club or the Fund please contact the Treasurer Mike Lucas on 077 4687 6947 or e-mail the club at [email protected]

A local resident has been collecting loose change all year ready for the Beer Walk charity collectors.
