Doane Men’s Soccer 20112

The Doane men’s soccer team enters 2011 with high expectations but with some shoes to fi ll following graduation last year. Doane lost six starters from last year’s team but the players that do return have plenty of experience for Coach Greg Jarosik. Jarosik enters his fi fth season at the helm of the Tiger program.

ScheduleThe GPAC schedule is reduced by one game this year with the conference remaining one of the toughest in the Midwest. The reigning champion is Hastings College and they will come to Crete for a contest on October 12. The Broncos are the defending NAIA National Champions and the game will mark the fi rst time Doane has hosted a defending champion in Crete for soccer.

The conference opener is at home against Mount Marty College on September 24. The Tigers will follow up with a pair of road games before returning home to take on Briar Cliff and Hastings. Doane will have a two-game home stand against Dordt and Concordia before closing out the season at Dakota Wesleyan.

The Tigers open the year at the Crimson Wave Invite. They will then take a couple of road trips to Kansas where they will face Tabor, Fort Hays State and Benedictine.

A pair of non-conference home games highlight the end of September when the Tigers play host to York and Graceland.

Media & Recruit Guide 3

Offensive ApproachDoane returns the top three point scorers from last year’s team in Tom Heavey, Devon Strecker and Jake Miller. The trio combined for 20 of the team’s 40 goals.

Heavey earned First Team All-GPAC honors last year after leading the team with eight goals. Strecker and Miller picked up Second Team honors after posting seven and fi ve goals, respectively.

Nick Kaufmann and Justin Hill will compete for time up front while Louie LaBudda will compete in the midfi eld for playing time.

The Tigers could have a few freshmen see playing time and be contributors to the offensive attack.

Defensive ApproachThe Tigers have a few holes to fi ll on the defensive side of the ball. Sean Dougherty returns the most experience in backfi eld and was all-conference last year. Alex Reynolds will move from forward to a back position.

Josh Novak has also started and brings experience for defending an outside third of the fi eld. Jake Hobza may have limited game experience but has been in the system for a few years and will look to make an impact on the team this fall. Jason Edwards transferred in last semester and will compete for time as well. Trevor Moss suffered an injury during the summer and the Tigers will hope that he is able to come back before post-season play begins.

In goal, Greg Beall has starting experience over his fi rst two years and will compete with freshman Eric Emerson in goal. They are the two goalies on the roster entering fall camp.

Head Coach Greg Jarosik took over as head coach of the Tiger men’s soccer program in December 2006. He added the women’s head coaching position in May 2009.

A native of Omaha, Neb., Jarosik graduated from Doane in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Jarosik was a member of Doane’s soccer team from 1997 to 2000.

His fi rst season with the Tigers was rough as the team went 6-10-1 and 3-8-1 in the GPAC. Doane did not qualify for the conference tournament as they lost seven of their last eight conference games. The Tigers’ six wins during the season were all by four goals or more.

In 2008, Jarosik’s squad went 10-9 to post the fi rst winning season in four years. Doane started the season 0-3 before winning a school-record eight straight games. The fi nal game of the streak was a thriller as Doane scored a goal with four seconds left against Dana to force overtime and eventually fi nish with a 3-2 victory.

The Tigers posted another 10-9 season and won eight conference games, tying for the most in school history. Doane won fi ve of their fi nal seven games that season with the only losses coming to GPAC champion Hastings.

In 2010, Doane posted their highest conference fi nish by placing second in the GPAC. Doane went 10-7-1 and 7-3-1 in GPAC play. The Tigers had a stretch of nine wins in 11 games which was capped by a come-back victory over Concordia. Doane trailed 4-1 before scoring four goals in 15 minutes for a 5-4 victory.

Jarosik has been coaching soccer since he was an undergraduate student, starting as an assistant for the Tigers in 2000. After graduating from Doane, he took an assistant coaching job at Gretna High School where the team won the state championship in 2002. He was named head coach after the 2002 season. During his tenure at Gretna, the Dragons compiled a 22-11 record. In 2004, Jarosik took the reigns at Papillion-LaVista South High School and served as head coach through the 2009 season. Jarosik has also coached for the Arsenal Soccer Club, one of the most successful club organizations in Nebraska. His 2006 team, Arsenal Veleno, won the state championship.

Greg and his wife, Andrea, reside in Omaha with their daughter, Allyson.

Eric Stearns

Eric Stearns joined the Tiger coaching ranks in Fall 2009. Stearns is a 2003 Doane graduate and he received a master’s degree from Fort Hays State University in 2008.

During his playing days for the Tigers, he became, and still is, the all-time leading scorer while receiving all-conference recognition in each of his four years.

Stearns is an assistant art professor at Doane, teaching throwing, handbuilding, sculpture and 3-D design. He has seen his work collected by numerious galleries and collectors around the world.

Chris Kavinsky joined the coaching staff as an assistant in Fall 2010 after a four-year playing career for the Tigers.

He works with the goalkeepers and assists in recruiting.

He fi nished his career ranking third all-time in wins with 23. Chris also ranks fourth in shutouts and fi fth in saves on the Doane charts.

He graduated from Doane in May 2010 with a degree in history and political science.

Juan Padilla joined the Tiger coaching staff in Fall 2011 after playing the past three years for Doane. He assists with the backs.

A defender for the Tigers, Padilla still proved to be an offensive weapon for Doane. Padilla fi nished his senior year with fi ve goals, several coming off of headers on corner kicks.

Padilla graduated from Doane in May 2011 with a degree in business administration and a minor in Spanish.

The men’s soccer team posted their highest fi nish in the GPAC by placing second during the regular season. Doane went 10-7-1 overall and fi nished 7-3-1 in the GPAC. Doane qualifi ed for the GPAC tournament but fell in the First Round to Dakota Wesleyan.

The early non-conference slate saw some low-scoring, tight contests. The Tigers won their opener over Harris-Stowe, 2-1, but dropped the next two games by a single goal.

Doane bounced back with a 5-1 win over Ottawa and a 7-0 shutout against York.

In conference play, the Tigers opened the year with four straight wins. A two game skid to open up the month of October included a loss to eventual national champion, Hastings College. Doane rebounded with back-to-back shutouts over Briar Cliff and Morningside.

Returning home after four road games, the Tigers fell behind Concordia 3-0 at halftime. In the second half, Doane trailed 4-1 before tallying four goals in 15 minutes with the game-winning goal coming from Devon Strecker as he fi nished with three in the game.

The close of the season was not favorable to the Tigers as they went 0-2-1.

Eight players were recognized by the GPAC this year, the most in school history. Earning First Team All-GPAC were Tom Heavey, Kyle Smith and Juan Padilla. Heavey, a junior forward, led the Tigers with eight goals and 19 points on the season. Smith, a senior midfi elder, fi nished with four goals for Doane, tied for fi fth most. Padilla, a senior, totaled fi ve goals from his defender position, which tied for third most on the team.

Earning Second Team All-GPAC were Devon Strecker, Monday Akogwu, Jake Miller and Sean Dougherty. Strecker, a forward, was second on the team in goals with seven. He had three game winners. Akogwu, a forward, fi nished with four goals and two assists despite getting a late start to the season due to injury. Miller, a midfi elder, tied for third on the team with fi ve goals and matched Strecker with three game winners. Dougherty, a defender, was second on the team with four assists and added a goal on the year.

Goalkeeper Matt Bickley earned honorable mention honors. He posted a 1.30 goals against average with 80 saves and nine victories.

All eight players were recognized by the Omaha World Herald’s All-Nebraska team, with Heavey, Smith, Padilla and Dougherty earning First Team honors.

Welcome From the GPAC Commissioner...Welcome to the GPAC website! The membership of the Great Plains Athletic Conference welcomes you to our on-line home. We hope that you fi nd all the infomation you need about the GPAC on this site, but if you have additional quesitons please contact me at [email protected]. The GPAC is extremely proud of our athletic accomplishments, but we are also pleased to announce that in 2010-2011 our league totaled 528 NAIA Scholar-Athletes! Our student athletes work very hard to balance academics with athletics and this is a testament to the administrators, faculty, and coaches in the league. 2011-12 marks our 12th year as the Great Plains Athletic Conference, with the league founded originally as the Nebraska-Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) in 1969. Thank you again for taking the time to visit our website and supporting the more than 4,000 student-athletes in the GPAC! The History of the Great Plains Athletic Conference...The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affi liated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 11 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retains fi ve of the six charter members - Concordia, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001.Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. Both schools are in Sioux City, Iowa.In the summer of 2010 Dana College ceased operations and in 2011 The University of Sioux Falls left the GPAC to join NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The GPAC sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports - nine for women and ten for men - and awards an All-Sports Trophy based on the fi nal league standings and conference meet results at the end of each school year. Wrestling has added as a sanctioned GPAC sport for 2006-2007. The GPAC is the only NAIA conference in the country to sponsor wrestling.Beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, the GPAC started awarding the Christopherson All-Academic Award. The award is a traveling trophy to be presented annually to the GPAC institution with the best academic performance by its student-athletes in all sports. The award is named in honor of Dr. Myrvin Christopherson, who recently retired as President of Dana College. Christopherson had served as the fi rst chair of the GPAC Council of Presidents. The GPAC has 19 NAIA National Champions...In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in fi ve years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. In March of 2010 Northwestern’s women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. In the fall of 2010 the Hastings Men’s Soccer Team capped a perfect 25-0 season by claiming the NAIA National Title. The Hastings Women’s Soccer team were NAIA National Runner-Ups in the fall of 2010. Northwestern repeated as NAIA women’s basketball champions in 2010-11 marking the eleventh champion from the GPAC in NAIA Division II basketball in the last 12 years.

Register online at PlayNAIA.org. Create an account with a valid email address.• Pay the one-time registration fee ($60 domestic students / US$85 international students) or indicate qualifi cation for a • fee waiver.

Within the online registration you will create a profi le including:

About Me - Includes basic contact information, previous residences during high school and any military service historyMy Academic Info - Records the student’s high school experience (including home school and GED) and colleges attended for transfers or current NAIA students. My Sports Experience - Collects information on athletic experiences outside of the high school setting. My NAIA Connections is an optional feature that allows a student to create an additional Sport Resume that can be shared with NAIA institutions. Once the online registration is complete, the prospective student submits the profi le to the NAIA Eligibility Center for evaluation.

Test scores When a prospective student-athlete takes the ACT or SAT, he/she must specify the code “9876” when registering for the exam in order to have the test scores sent directly to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center before having your test scores sent.

TranscriptUpon graduation from high school, transferring from a two- or four-year college, or completing one or more semesters at an NAIA school, prospective student-athlete must ask their high school guidance counselors or college registrars to send offi cial transcripts to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Offi cial transcripts must be:

Stamped with the offi cial school seal and/or signature, and• Sent in an offi cial school envelope that is marked by a school offi cial over the seal, showing that a school offi cial was the • last person to handle the document.

If you are sending transcripts from several schools, you can place the already sealed offi cial transcripts into one, larger envelope and mail them together.

Transcripts received directly from students/parents without the school-sealed envelope are not offi cial and will not be accepted.

Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center and complete your academic information before having transcripts sent. This will allow you to generate your personal transcript cover page you can give to your school to be mailed with your documents.

NOTE: Students who fi nish their junior year with an overall 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale, and have at least an 18 ACT or 860 SAT test score, can receive an early eligibility decision. Those students should request their high school send an offi cial transcript at the end of their junior year.

DOANE MEN’S SOCCER HISTORY

Doane men’s soccer began as an intercollegiate sport in the fall of 1996. The Tigers went 0-13 in that fi rst year under coach Marty Shield. Shield coached the fi rst six season of Tiger soccer, winning as many as 12 in 2000. The most wins in a season was in 2002 when Doane went 15-7-1.

Doane is one of a few schools that has two playing surfaces. The Den is a natural grass surface located on the east end of campus while Simon Field is an artifi cial turf surface that is also used for football and located on the north end of campus.

The Tigers have also had some excellent players come through the ranks during the brief existence. Eric Stearns and Rob Triano top the all-time goals scored list with 35. Wilson Herrera is third with 30 goals. Adam Boilesen holds the career assists mark with 26. Stearns is second with 22 career assists.

Kip Hovie holds the career mark for career wins in goal with 35. He also holds the mark for career shutouts with 19. Chris Entwistle has the most saves in a career with 530. Greg Tuma holds the mark for most saves in a season with 198.

The Tigers have also had success in the classroom. On 14 occassions, a Tiger student-athlete has received NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. The team has also been recognized in the Scholar-Team Award in 2007-08 and 2009-10.

Justin Feerhusen received the highest individual academic honor as he was named CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-American in 2007. I was named First Team All-District 7 as well. In 2006, Feerhusen received Academic All-District 7 Second Team honors.

The Doane College mission is to provide an exceptional liberal arts education in a creative, inclusive, and collaborative community where faculty and staff work closely with undergraduate and graduate students preparing them for lives rooted in intellectual inquiry, ethical values, and a commitment to engage as leaders and responsible citizens in the world. When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s fi rst private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of fi rst president David Brainerd Perry to the current 12th president, Dr. Jacque Carter, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. Today, the college serves more than 3,200 students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Crete, Lincoln, and Grand Island, Neb., and focuses on providing an exceptional educational experience for all students. DOANE ACADEMICS

Doane Men’s Soccer 201156

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORTThe transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC).

In contrast to many students’ high school course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to substitute for required readings.

Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefi t of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and fi nals are all critical to any student’s academic success.

Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center.

The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance.

Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notifi cation of eligibility is sent to new students in the fi rst few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.

Simon Field was constructed in 1929 following a generous gift from G. Eli Simon, a Cambridge, Nebraska, attorney and father of a graduating senior. Simon Field is located on the north side of the campus and is home to the football and soccer teams. Lauritsen Track surrounds the fi eld and is home to the track & fi eld teams.

Field turf was installed in 2000. As part of the renovation, a new outdoor, polyurethane track was also installed. Both the fi eld and track are used by the Crete community and Crete High School. The press box was wired with Internet capabilities in the summer of 2004.

In the summer of 2011, Simon Field underwent a renovation with the installation of new fi eld turf. The new surface will feature sown in lines for the football and soccer boundaries. The fi rst surface in 2000 had painted lines that faded each year.

The Den is the practice facility for Doane soccer. The fi rst home of Tiger Soccer, The Den is a grass surface located on the southeast end of campus.

Fuhrer Field House is located east of Simon Field and locker rooms used for home games are located in this building as well as the LeRoy W. & Bertha L. Hood Athletic Training Facility. The fi eld house can also be utilized for indoor practices if weather prevents action at Simon Field or The Den.

The George & Sally Haddix Center opened in Fall 2010 and features a state-of-the-art weight room and fi tness center that is utilized by Tiger athletes. The coaches’ offi ce are also located in the Haddix Center as well as meeting rooms.
