New Features - Plug-ins
In earlier releases, plug-ins were meant to embed
third party Target-Types in Enterprise Manager
With EM12c
Plug-ins are used to monitor all Target-Types
without any deployed Plug-ins only the
Agent and the host would (and could) be monitored
Depending on the Plug-in, it needs to be
deployed to the OMS only or to both,
OMS and Agent
Plug-ins have independent release cycles
so every time you have a new version of an
Oracle product released, you will have a new
version of the plug-in released as well to
support monitoring of that new product version
in Enterprise Manager 12c Cloud Control

EM 12c – Prerequisites
There are some (minor) changes in the prereqs compared to 11g
(Example is for a "Small Configuration" on Linux)
Experience shows that these resources may not be sufficient
Especially RAM should be doubled if available!
Consult the documentation for complete prerequisites

One-System Upgrade
Upgrades the currently running OMS and Repository Database
Comparable to an Oracle Single Instance Upgrade
Downtime: yes, as long as it takes to upgrade EM
One-System Upgrade using a different host
EM12c is installed on another server
But the Database of the old OMS is upgraded for EM12c
So, not much difference to One-System Upgrade?
Downtime: yes
Upgrade – Methods (1)
June 2012
22 DOAG Regio Würzburg
2012 © Trivadis
Two-System Upgrade
Based on a Backup of the currently running Repository Database
On top of this Repository a EM12c OMS will be installed
The Repository Database will get upgraded to EM12c
A Database Link from the currently running system to EM12c will be created
- this provides synchronization with EM12c
Agents can be migrated one after another, both systems are active
Downtime: no
New Installation
Just install a completely new EM12c environment
Migrate Agents suited to your needs
Much simpler than an Upgrade, a fresh start
- but of course any configuration done is lost
Downtime: no, but administrative efforts
If it is possible for you, we recommend it

Installing the Management Agent – available Methods
Push Deployment
The agent will be installed from the OMS on the target host via SSH
Silent Installation
The agents installation sources are provided on the target host manually.
Afterwards a silent installation using a response file is done
RPM-based method
RPMs can be created which can be installed like every other RPM
Unfortunately this method has downsides and we do not recommend it
Shared Agent Installation
In this instance the agent is installed once and started on every machine via
NFS. To support this the Agent Instance directory is used for storing local data

Managing Targets – Promoting Targets (1)
The process to convert a discovered target to a managed target is called
Promoting. We are showing this process using two discovered
databases.
We click on the number of discovered targets ("6" in our case)
Which will preset a list of all discovered, but unmanaged targets
We select one of the Database Instances and click Promote
June 2012
28 DOAG Regio Würzburg

Managing Targets – Promoting Targets (2)
After entering the credentials of the user used for monitoring the
databases a summary is presented, we click Promote to start the
process of converting the targets to "managed" state
After a couple of minutes, the process finishes
June 2012
DOAG Regio Würzburg 29
Notice: even though we only selected one of the databases, all targets of the same type are promoted

Named Credentials - Background
Named Credentails are in essence stored passwords with a tag
For security reasons there may be concerns with passing passwords
Even between DBAs
Named Credentials solve this issue
Example: Lets assume dba1 knows the password and wants to grant
dba2 access to a system but hesitates passing the password.
dba1 creates a Named Credential consisting of
- Username and Password
Then dba1 grants dba2 the right to use this named credential
CloudControl only presents the well known ******* to dba2, but
EM12c uses the stored password when logging in on behalf of dba2
June 2012

Named Credentials - Example
Scopes
Target
- Target Credentials are tied to a specific target
Global
- Global Credentials are valid for all targets of a given target type

Privilege Delegation Providers - Background
For security reasons…
Setups exist where the oracle Operating System user is either
locked,
prohibited from logging in, or
the password is not known by the DBA
In these cases a Privilege Delegation Provider (PDP) is used
EM12c supports the two most common PDPs
Sudo, and
PowerBroker
Prerequisites need to be fulfilled
June 2012
32 DOAG Regio Würzburg
2012 © Trivadis
Privilege Delegation Providers – Sudo Example
Prerequisites
The following parameters need to be set in /etc/sudoers
June 2012
DOAG Regio Würzburg
(trivadis is the user which is used to log on to the system)
Configuration
Select Sudo as Privilege Delegation Provider (PDP)
Enter the Command to run: /usr/bin/sudo –E –u %RUNAS% %COMMAND%
the –E is important because of
Bug 13513154 (opened by Trivadis)

Target Management – Target Attributes
Each target has attributes
Lifecycle Status is the only field with
pre-defined values
Development, Test, Staging, Production and
Mission Critical are available
all other fields are standard text-fields
be aware of possible typos when using
these values for further processing
"R&D", "R & D", "Research & Development"
are distinct values
Fields can be added and removed by using emcli

Target Management – Administration Group Hierarchy
To implement Adminstration Groups, a hierarchy has to be planned in
advance
once defined, this hierarchy cannot be altered, only dropped and recreated
This Hierarchy depends on how you manage services and systems in
your organisation
an example:
The first level is based on the Lifecycle Status of the target
The second level is based on the Target Type

Enterprise Monitoring – Basics
Metrics
are the basic building blocks of Enterprise Monitoring. Metrics are
checks whose results are compared to thresholds.
Events
are generated every time a metric or compliance check changes its state
(e.g. from "Warning" to "Critical")
Incidents
are generated from Events using Incident Rules. Incidents can be
assigned, escalated, given a priority or can be used to group similar
events together.

Incidents – Incident Rule Engine
The Incident Rules Engine is used to process Events
It consists of
Incident Rulesets (which have one or more..)
Incident Rules (which have one or more…)
Actions
Incident Rules and Actions reflect how
Administrators should be notified of events
Filter conditions can be used, for example
Event Type
Event Severity
Target Type, Target Name,….
Additionally it is possible to react on already created Incidents or Problems
For example: a Incident can be escalated if it is still unassigned after 24 hours
Unfortunately it is not possible to quit execution after a rule

Enterprise Monitoring – Incident Rules
Further processing of the Event takes place using Incident Rules
Incident Rulesets contain one or more Incident Rules
Incident Rules contain one or more Actions
To define which Rule (or more specific), which Action,
should handle the Event, a set of filters can be defined
for example: Every Metric Alert with a Severity of Warning, Critical or Fatal will…
… create an eMail to SYSMAN and create an Incident,…
… this incident will be assigned to SYSMAN and its Priority set to "Very High"

Much has changed since Enterprise Manager 11g
In almost every case to the better, but…
"with great flexibility comes great complexity"
Named Credentials, finally!
Ever had the Problem that Developers want to look at Real-Time Performance
Data using Enterprise Manager, but you don't want to give away the password
of the powerful user used?
Named Credentials are mandatory throughout the User Interface
Developing a Naming Convention is essential!
Is EM12c ready for production?
In general: Yes
still, you may want to test it in your environment, just like any other software
Conclusion – Enterprise Manager itself

Private Cloud is an exciting feature
This could solve so many issues companies have at the moment
In conjunction with the Self-Service Portal Users can create and destroy
machines as the see fit, without bothering SysAdmins or DBAs
Our tests were quite successful!
Chargeback solves an old discussion
With Chargeback resources can be charged to the department using it
So IT can act as a Service Provider charging for their services
If you see fit: use it, its simple and powerful
