What is Ambient Intelligence ?What is Ambient Intelligence ?

Definition:Ambient intelligence refers to the presence of a digital environment that is

sensitive, adaptive, and responsive to the presence of people.(Emile Aarts, Philips Research / TUE)

The ongoing miniaturization allows integration of electronics into peoples’ environments:

Characteristics Embedded – aware – natural – personalized – adaptive – anticipatory

5 W’sWHO – WHERE – WHAT – WHY – WHEN

Setup of the minor (1)Setup of the minor (1)

The minor Ambient Intelligence (AMI) consists of three parts:

ConceptsIntroduction into the field of AMI: what is it – how usable – related technologies – future expectations – social aspects - excursions etc.

SkillsTopics and techniques out of the Software Engineering, Mechatronic, Product Design domain, being relevant in the field of AMI (Computer Vision, Software Architectures, Machine Learning - Embedded intelligence, Robotics - Sensorial Ergonomics,

Human Interaction Technology, Visualization ).

X-perienceApply knowledge out of the concepts and skills parts, in a self-defined ambient project.

Self defined project, with some requirements:

Context Awareness (5 W‘s: who – where – what – why – when)Embodyment (presentation in an interface)

Tele presence (Beam me up Scotty)Cheap sensors with predefined API’s (webcams / microphones / thermometers)

Several modalities (image / sound / binary sensors)System generates lots of data

RESTless

RESTless is a device which supports you during your sport activities, like running, skating, cycling or walking. It records your track data. The transmitted data will store online in the RESTless portal, there you can see how fast you were on which part of the analyzed track. In the portal you can download information of predefined routes on the device. The device navigates the person on the track. During the track the sportsman gets informed if there are around other RESTless sportsmen.

Rovio Care System

The Rovio Care System is for people who are in need of care to help them in their daily life. The Rovio Care System helps by cleaning up the room, or finding personal things, buy medicine, proofing vital functions or remind the person to take their medicine. To defend from episodes like falling to the ground or a fire alarm are aspects the Rovio Care System comes with. In a final step the system comes with the reminding on important things like dates or tasks which are to do, keeping up social contacts or to entertain with games or quizzes.

Personal Museum Guide

The PMG is a project for the Vesting Museum in Naarden. It aims to give visitors the possibility to experience an interactive tour through the museum by allowing them to choose a role at the beginning. Depending on his choice he is provided with different information about exhibits from sound showers and follows a storyline that guides him from one station to the next. At each station – depending on role and storyline – events can occur like sound, that is played, when a room is entered, or light that illuminates a special part of a room.
