Under-age drinking is a veryserious issue and onethat I am glad to seethe police are puttingso much energy andresources into combat-ing. Children can beeasily misled as theygrow older but it isimportant that they concentrate on school workand understand the dangers of drinking alcohol.

You are not only putting your own health at riskbut potentially other people’s health. We all have aresponsibility to ensure the youth of Burnley andPadiham are looked after and this includes theschools, the council, the police, the shops, numer-ous agencies and of course the parents.

I am sure that this campaign, during the courseof the next nine weeks, will tackle the issues headon and ensure the town remains safe for all mem-bers of the public.

BURNLEY FCPLAYER JAYRODRIGUEZ – “IFyoung children haveany aspirations of mak-ing it as a professionalfootballer or in anyother sport then alco-hol is something theydefinitely need toavoid. To become asportsman or a sports-woman you need tostay fit and healthyand make you sure youstudy hard. It’s easy tofeel pressured, especial-ly when you are in biggroups of friends, butyou need to stay strongand do what is best foryou.

It’s good to see thepolice taking the matter so seriously and I hope allthe youngsters out there who have been tempted byalcohol take the message on board.

FOR local youths, hanging aroundon a street corner or in a park,having a drink and a laugh mightseem like an acceptable way tospend their night but underagedrinking is no laughing matter.

It has a huge impact on localcommunities and could well haveadverse effects on the health ofthose involved too.

To tackle the problem, we areteaming up with the NelsonLeader, Colne Times andBarnoldswick and Earby Timesand launching a campaign of edu-

cation and enforcement activity."Nightsafe" will involve visits to

local schools and colleges to edu-cate youths about the risks andconsequences of underage drink-ing, as well as increased policepatrols in hot spot areas.

These patrols, which will alsoinvolve parents and school teach-ers, will see alcohol being seized,no drinking zones enforced andwhere necessary, £40 FixedPenalty Notices handed out tounderage drinkers.

In addition to this firm action,

officers will also be working inpartnership with off licences to cutoff the supply of alcohol; and withparents, who will be encouragedto take greater responsibility fortheir children.

I realise that it is only a relativelysmall proportion of our young peo-ple engaged in underage drinkingand I do not want to criminalise allyoung people.

However, I do want young peo-ple to realise that underage drink-ing will not be tolerated in localcommunities.

I hope that people will supportour campaign, not just by giving ittheir backing, but by gettinginvolved too.

Children who drink are oftenunaware of the harm that they aredoing to themselves, so it is up toparents to do all that they can tokeep their kids alcohol-free.

TALK TO THEMAlthough it may not always feel

like it, kids do listen to their par-ents. It's best if you start youngand strive to keep the lines of com-munication open. Kids respondbetter to a bunch of small talksrather than a big lecture, so try toincorporate your opinions andthoughts about drinking into con-versations throughout your chil-dren's childhoods. And do yourbest not to talk down to your kids -remember that kids tend to feel alot more grown up than we thinkthey are. They will value yourinput a lot more if you give it withrespect to their opinions.

TAKE ACTIONParenting is no easy task. In

today's world, kids are faced withadult choices every day and needto be strong in order to make wisechoices. Concerned parents can doa number of things to help keeptheir underage children from drink-ing.

Keep in touch with other par-ents and be sure that your child is

in responsible hands when not athome. Allow your children toattend parties only when properadult supervision will be available.Often, kids who might otherwisestay out of trouble find themselvesin a situation that they don't knowhow to handle. Peer pressure can bedifficult for teens, so making surethat an adult will be on hand tokeep tabs on the kids can help torelieve some of the pressure forkids. Also, be sure that you moni-tor what goes on in your home.Other parents need to know thattheir kids are safe when visitingyour house.

Stay actively involved in yourchildren's lives and get to knowtheir friends. It is your right andobligation to know where your chil-dren are and what they are up to.Be sure that your kids understandthat it is not a matter of trust, sim-ply a matter of caring. Whetherthey admit it or not, kids appreci-ate knowing that their parents careenough to make and enforce somerules.

Keeping kids busy with produc-tive activities will help them toavoid underage drinking. Boredomis a dangerous thing for kids, espe-cially teenagers, so be sure thatyour children stay involved in ath-letics, music, art, or other activitiesthat give them something to do.

SET THE EXAMPLEKids often follow the example

set by their parents. If you drink,be sure that you do so in a respon-sible manner and never allow yourchildren to drink in your presence.Sending the message that youaccept underage drinking, even inmoderation, is risky. It is muchbetter to show your children howyou expect them to behave, ratherthan merely telling them.

SIGNS OF A PROBLEMDespite our best efforts, some

teenagers will drink. If you suspectthat your teenager is drinking, besure to take action. Without yourintervention, your teenager coulddevelop a serious drinking prob-

lem. Signs of underage drinkinginclude:

● Changes in mood, includingirritability and temper outbursts.

● Problems in school such aspoor attendance, a bad attitudetowards schoolwork, or a drop ingrades.

● Disobedience of family rules.● Dropping long-term friends in

favour of a new group, especially ifyour teen is reluctant to have youmeet their new friends.

● Low energy and a lack ofinterest in activities that were pre-viously enjoyed.

● Smelling alcohol on yourchild's breath or finding alcoholamongst their possessions.

● Signs of drunkenness, includ-ing slurred speech, lack of coordi-nation, or bloodshot eyes.

By recognising the signs, talkingto your children, setting an exam-ple and taking some action you canhelp keep your children safe andreduce the risk of problems in laterlife.
