DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS? It's impossible to imagine the anguish all the unfortunates in New Orleans have endured thanks to Katrina. I don't live there, never have. But I've had an ongoing love affair with the city and its cultural gumbo of history, music, and cuisine. No, I never

took my sketchbook into the Ninth Ward, but visiting Congo Square, the French Quarter, Degas's house on the Esplanade, Jazz Fest and the Garden District, I sensed that poverty and racism were never far away. As I share on these pages some of my

memories of the Crescent City before the flood, I can't stop wondering what's become of its musicians, street performers, bartenders, tarot readers, and exotic dancers after the flood.
