Mission It is the mission of the Pike County Adult Education
& Family Literacy Program to provide services that will improve
an individuals ability to read, write and speak English; compute;
solve problems; and function effectively in the workplace, family
and society. These programs provide free, direct, comprehensive
basic skills and family literacy services. Family Literacy Programs
are designed to break the intergenerational cycle of
under-education by providing opportunities for parents and their
children to learn together. Family literacy provides parents with
basic academic and employability skills; emphasizes parenting and
life skills; ensures that children are provided age-appropriate
educational instruction; and ensures developmentally appropriate
experiences that require interaction between parents and
children

ceremony / reception will take place during the month of December
for those individuals passing the GED between July and

#1 How Much Does It Cost? Classes and materials are FREE!!! The
actual GED testing fee is $55.00.

#3 When Is the Actual GED Test Given and What Do I Need To
Bring? The test is given the first Saturday of each month,
beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the center room of the Pike County Board
of Education. A photo ID is required.

#4 What Is on the GED Test? Science 50 multiple-choice
questions Social Studies 50 multiple-choice questions Reading 40
multiple-choice questions Math I & II 40 multiple-choice

#5 How Do I Know If I Pass the GED? A successful applicant must
achieve a minimum average standard score of 450 (2250 total points)
for the combined five tests with no score on any one test less than
410. High school equivalency diplomas are issued directly to
examinees passing the tests. You will receive your certificate in
the mail.

#6 If I Dont Pass the GED Test Do I Have to Take All Five Parts
of the Test Over? No, you only have to retake the part or parts of
the test that you did not pass. Cost is $25.00 per part. Sometimes,
you may have to take more than one part of the test to help bring
up your total score.

#7 How Many Times Can I Take the GED Test? Three times within
one year!

#8 How Do I Sign up for the GED Test? Come to an Adult
Education center Pass the Official Practice Test The Adult
Education Instructor will complete the KYAE-6 GED Testing
Application form Take the KYAE-6 form to the second floor of the
Pike County Board of Education Administration Building in
Pikeville, KY to pre-register and pay the $55 testing fee

#9 Can I Get My GED Online? The GED Testing Service (GEDTS) has
issued a warning about entities claiming to offer online GED
testing. GED credentials can NOT be earned via the Internet or
through correspondence programs.

Shelby Valley High School There is no set number of days or hours
for students to attend. But, the more days and hours you attend the
faster you will reach your goal and be able to take the GED test!!
After 50 hours of skill development, you will take a post test of
the TABE to see the progress you have made! This 50 hours will
consist of class time, homework hours, and computer
instruction.

How Often Do I Have to Attend Class Depends of Location Managed
Enrollment Classrooms Bevins Center, Elkhorn Elementary Center, and
Phelps Vocational Center 5/6 week sessions 2 hour blocks in content
area classes (reading, math, language, writing) Open Lab computer
work and individual instruction Friday scheduled testing After 50

# 13 How do I find out what I need to learn? Take the TABE
Locator Test A very short test in reading, math and language Then
take the TABE Full Battery Test This 3 hour test also covers
reading, math and language. Your instructor will review your scores
to find out what you need to study in this class.

# 14 Can I get into college with a GED? Yes! 98% of colleges
and universities that require a high school diploma accept the GED
credential GED graduates are also eligible for most federal
financial aid programs provided they meet other criteria. Start
thinking about your post GED education goals now!

What about accommodations for people with special needs?
Special test editions including Braille, audiocassette, and large
print are available. Standard testing accommodations may include
extended time, supervised breaks, use of a calculator, scribe, and
a private room may also be granted. -- NOTE: If you have ever been
diagnosed with a learning difficulty or ADD, feel free to share
this information with your instructors so they may help you learn
in your special way.
