Today you will be making two experimental test tubes. One will be a control (no plant seedlings) and the other will be your variable (plant seedlings)
You will be testing to find out if plants produce carbon dioxide from cellular respiration.

If the plants produce carbon dioxide, this solution will turn a different color by tomorrow.

Take both your test tubes

Pour about 1 inch of purple cabbage juice into the bottom of each test tube. Try to make both sides equal

Tear your cotton ball in half

Place the cotton ball halves into the two test tubes

Using a pencil or pen, gently press the cotton balls into the test tubes. Do not let the cotton ball touch the liquid, leave about a half inch of space above the liquid.

Carefully select 5 seedlings form the tray

Place all 5 seedlings into one test tube. This will be the experimental test tube.

You may need to gently push the seedlings down to the cotton ball.

Your test tubes should look like this

Place a rubber stopper into each of the test tubes.
The test tube with no seedlings is your control.
This will verify that the liquid did not just change color on its own during the experiment.

Use a small piece of tape to label your test tubes with the initials of one member of your table group and your period.
Return your test tubes to the rack Mr. Haug has for your period.
