State of Nature
o John Locke, an English philosopher, influenced the thinking of the founding fathers.
oAccording to Locke this is when NO government or laws exist.
o Your scenarios last class were examples of this!!
Locke’s Natural Rights1.) Life: People want to survive and feel safe
2.) Liberty: People want to be free and make their own decisions
3.) Property: People want to own things that are necessary to survive (homes, land)
OAll people have these rights because they are human beings!!
Social Contract
Agreement between government and people.O This is what you are giving up to be
protected by your government!!!
In a state of nature, no one has the right to govern you, no one’s life, liberty or property would be protected.
Therefore, the people must give their consent.
