Turn and Talk – what does President Roosevelt mean?

"Let no man or woman thoughtlessly or falsely talk of America sending its armies to European fields...This nation will remain a neutral nation...I have said not once, but many times, that I have seen war and I hate war....”

• - FDR, in a radio speech, September 3, 1939 (two days after Hitler invaded Poland and the same day that Britain and France declared war on Germany)

9.3 How does the United States Respond to the beginning of WWII in Europe?

• 1930s – U.S. has policy of “isolationism”– Great Depression– Just fought WWI

• 1935 Neutrality Act – USA will not ship arms/weapons to either side.

• 1940 – Germany captures France. USA makes “Lend-lease” policy – will let Great Britain borrow weapons, and they will return them after the war.
