Reader Honey Reyes wrote to share with me her two encounters with what she believes to be her spirit guides.

One time, I woke up screaming because of a pain in my ear. It was bleeding. My mom asked a neighbor to call an ambulance, since we did not have a phone at that time. I was crying; with my eyes closed, I felt a cold but very soothing hand touch my ear. I thought it was my mom. Then the pain was suddenly gone.

When my mom came back, my family found me sleeping so peacefully as if nothing happened. I woke up in the morning with lots of blood in my ear, but the doctor found nothing wrong with it.

I believe it was a woman who touched me, could be my late grandmother or Mama Mary, since I come from a Catholic upbringing.

Honeys second story about spirit guides is scarier and more dramatic.

I was waiting for a jeepney ride across Glorietta around 7 p.m. on Sunday to go to my condo on Yakal Street. I waited for probably 10 to 15 minutes and was already losing patience. There were only three of us waiting then. When the jeepney came, people went rushing to it but I stood frozen. I didnt move, as if I was in atrance; my mind was blank. Only one seat was left right behind the driver.

People and the driver were calling me to get in, but I didnt move, as if I didnt hear them. As I stood transfixed there, a young guy carrying a white rose and a little teddy bear came running toward the jeepney and sat behind the driver.

I got mad at myself for being so tanga. After a few more minutes, another jeepneycame and I was able to board. Shortly afterwards we passed by the previous jeepney which had tumbled across the street in an accident, killing instantly both t

he driver and the young guy behind him.

The other passengers inside the jeep I was riding were surprised to see me crying. I told them I was supposed to be on that jeep seated behind the driver. If I did, I would be the one lying dead over there.

I knew instantly that someone protected me from that terrible accident.

Guardian angels or spirit guides? Although there is a difference between these two terms, we shall use them interchangeably in this article.

The question of whether guardian angels exist was investigated for two years byFrench journalist Pierre Jovanovic because of an incredible incident that happen

ed to him in Los Angeles.

At the end of two years research, he came up with the unshakable conclusion thatguardian angels really exist. He wrote a fascinating book with the intriguing title, An Inquiry into the Existence of Guardian Angels (A Journalists InvestigativeReport), published in 1995 by M. Evans and Co. Inc. in New York.

Why did this French journalist who ran the French Press Agency in Los Angeles embark on this seemingly unorthodox study? The front-cover flap provided the following answer:

Jovanovic was driving home on a Silicon Valley freeway when he was hurled to theside of the car by a mysterious force. Seconds later, a bullet crashed through the windshield and buried itself in the back of the passengers seat. Highway patrolmen told him that if he hadnt moved he would have been killed.

Shaken and curious, he began to compare notes with other journalists, many of whom were war zone survivors. Most had some kind of comparable experience of beingsnatched from death by an unseen hand.

During his investigations, odd things began to happen. During an out-of-the-bluediscussion about guardian angels during dinner, a feather fell from nowhere intohis guests soup; a friend felt moved to bring him a tape of sermons for no reason at all, except when they played it in the car, they discovered it was an explanation of guardian angels.

The book contains numerous documented and detailed examples of spirit intervention into human affairs which are difficult to deny or to regard merely as coincidences or products of fertile imaginations.

The two experiences of Honey Reyes of being healed of a sickness and being savedfrom a fatal accident are therefore not unique, nor uncommon.
