At the Annual Meeting in September the Nominations Committee will recommend two individuals for election to Regular Corporate seats on the Board. The IPO Board of Directors is composed of chief IP counsel of IPO member companies. There are two categories of Board members:

1. Regular Corporate: These individuals serve a 2-year term that cannot be renewed for consecutive terms. In this case the terms would be January 1, 2016-December 31, 2017. IPO membership dues for these board members are the same as those your company is paying now.

2. Sustaining Corporate: These individuals serve 2-year terms that may be renewed an unlimited number of times. Annual dues for sustaining positions are higher than those for Regular Corporate members.

We’ve got a great way to try it out! Volunteer to be an IP Expert Speaker. IPO and the IPO Education Foundation are launching an IP Expert Search tool later this month. The tool will allow members of the public to connect with IP experts. For example, a university engineering professor might want someone to speak to a class about how IP rights work for inventors at corporations. Or a music conservatory may have a need for someone to provide basic information about copyrights when it comes to sharing music on line.

If you’d like to volunteer as an IP Expert, login to the IPO website and under your member profile click the “SPEAKER” button to enter the information you would like to have appear on the public search page. The IPO Education Foundation’s IP Video Contest does great work in educating young people about IP.  This scholarship program gives students the opportunity to share what they know about IP in a creative video.   Previous contest winners include LEWIE KLOSTER, currently a film student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He recently talked with the Foundation’s Innovator Insights about his experience with the Video Contest and how it helped him develop an understanding of IP rights.  Of the contest he said, “flying out to DC and winning a $5,000 scholarship was such an incredible honor. During the Foundation Awards Dinner, I talked with some of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met…It put a fire in my belly to keep going, because losing 10 or 20 contests is worth winning that one. USE THE IPO WEBSITE TO EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT IP LEGISLATION AND POLICY

The IPO website is a great resource for educating yourself on legislation and other important IP policy issues. Under the Advocacy section, you will find information about “Hot Topics” including USPTO Funding and Patent Legislation, among others. Also under the Advocacy section you will find IPO amicus briefs, all resolutions adopted by the IPO Board since 2001, testimony and comments, and a list of IP bills introduced in the Congress in the two most recent sessions. IPO ADVOCATES FOR YOU

On behalf of its members, IPO advocates reforms to provide cost-effective and reliable intellectual property programs. IPO positions are communicated to Congress, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Copyright Office, the U.S. Trade Representative and other administrative agencies. IPO also files amicus briefs in select cases of interest to a broad cross-section of IPO membership in order to influence government IP policy for the benefit of members. Did you know that IPO has a PAC? A PAC (political action committee) is an organization that pools contributions from members to donate to candidates for political office. The IPO PAC regularly contributes to candidates who advocate for effective intellectual property protection.
