    Introduction

Radical new styling that grabs attention from every angle.Form-fitting comfort that invites one to both sit on and toride. Smooth response to every rider input, reacting withexhilarating performance at every twist of its throttle, and… no clutch! Not only that, no gear changer! Is thisreally a motorcycle? Or is it some strange kind ofscooter?

With its astounding concept bike looks, long-and-lowproportions, high-styled 17" wheels and powerful V-twinengine, Honda’s new DN-01 is most certainlya motorcycle. One that provides all the exhilarating ridingenjoyment one would expect from the finest of its breed. But… no clutch. Instead, the DN-01 introduces tomotorcycling the most advanced fully automatictransmission ever developed for any two-wheeledvehicle. One that provides all the strong power andacceleration one associates with ‘real’ motorcyclemanual transmissions. One that frees its rider fromthe distracting complications of a manual transmissionand opens the door to a new world of completemotorcycle riding enjoyment.

When the DN-01 first debuted at the 2005 Tokyo MotorShow, many thought it to be just another interestingConcept Bike design exercise that would disappear andbe promptly forgotten like so many others before it. Itspromise of strong performance delivered through an‘infinitely variable HFT transmission’ seemed like anotherwild claim, like those often heard to describe automotiveconcept machines that never see the light of day. Littledid people know that the DN-01’s long years of researchand development would soon see fruition in a bold newproduction model which would carry all the styling impactand technological advancements of its initial concept, and still deliver on its promise of unparalleled riding easeand enjoyment. As its name implies, the new DN-01 isthe very first of a unique breed of ‘Dream New’motorcycles that will soon be blazing new trails tothe future of two-wheeled riding ease and exhilarationthat anybody can enjoy.

    Development Concept

When Honda’s team of development engineers set outto create an entirely new category of motorcycle, theysought to combine elements of swift sportbikeperformance, relaxed custom cruiser riding comfort andthe delightful operating ease of a big twist-and-goscooter. The plan also included such modern necessitiesas environmentally friendly emissions levels andthe most up-to-date security and riding safetytechnologies for the ultimate in advanced motorcycleperformance and riding enjoyment.

One of the first criteria for this new breed of motorcyclewas to create a new sense of value that could be easilyseen in its dynamic design, and experienced in its rideand performance. Thus, the new machine’s proudlyurbane Performance Cruiser looks were formulatedbased on the initial concepts of “Relaxing and Cool,”“Individualistic” and “Sophisticated High Quality,” whichguided every aspect of its design. Eye-catching,organically styled bodywork was drawn up to createa unique, never-before-seen form that exudesexcitement and makes one want to ride. The feel ofthe new machine should also strongly emphasise all thata motorcycle can be, and what only a motorcycle canoffer: an outstanding sense of comfort and stability thatinstantly appeals to riders of all ranges of experience;a secure feeling of control enhanced by its low seat andfirm knee grip, which provides a unified sensation of rider/machine integration; and a confident feeling ofresponsive power, handing and control that contributesto overall riding enjoyment.

Next, operation must be easy for all, and relaxing in everyway, with light-handling manoeuvrability and nodistractions from the intimate pleasure of gliding downthe road and around the bends. Central to this ultimateriding ease would necessarily be the elimination ofthe traditional clutch and gear shifter combination thathas separated motorcycles from other forms oftransportation for generations. No more uncomfortable‘clunks’ into gear, no missed shifts, no embarrassingstalls, no scuffed shoes and no tired wrists from constantclutch lever operation. Yet, as riding moods change withthe landscape, the motorcycle should also be able toadapt accordingly, offering not only smooth and easytwist-and-go operation, but also respond to a livelierpace with sportier performance, or even spontaneousmanual shifting when desired.

Central to meeting the development goals for this newconcept of riding machine was yet another new concept—of motorcycle power transfer—that Honda has hadunder steady development for over twenty years:A new, fully automatic transmission designed to providesmooth, infinitely variable power conversion ratios withseamless control, yet able to automatically adjust tovarying load conditions with swift, sure response andoptimised power output to the rear wheel, maintainingbreathtaking acceleration wherever it goes. This epoch-making new development made its debut in the 2005DN-01 Concept Bike under the name ‘HFT’, or Human-Friendly Transmission. Specially designed to—forthe first time ever—bridge the gap between scooter-likeoperating ease and the crisp, responsive performanceassociated with a proper motorcycle transmission, HFTgives the new DN-01 breathtaking acceleration coupledwith remarkably smooth and easy operation, forrevolutionary riding performance to emphatically back upits next-generation styling.

The remarkable new 2008 DN-01 will appear onthe avenues and winding roads of Europe offeringpeerless performance and incomparable riding ease ina distinctly modern and sporty form that invites its ridersto rediscover the profound enjoyment of motorcycling onan all-new roadster—or ‘Ridester’—with wide appeal. The future calls, and Honda answers with the DN-01.

    Revolutionary New Human-Friendly Transmission (HFT)

More than its engine, what really sets the new DN-01apart and on its way to the future of motorcycle ridingenjoyment is its highly advanced new automatictransmission system, called HFT, orthe Human-Friendly Transmission. A totally newdevelopment, the DN-01’s engine cases were speciallymade to hold this remarkably light and responsivetransmission system. Not to be confused withconventional belt converter systems such as used intwist-and-go scooters, or semi-automatic transmissionsthat manually shift between conventional gear ratioswithout using a manual clutch, HFT is a fully developedhydro-mechanical transmission featuring a hydraulicclutch that automatically and seamlessly changes driveratios, not just belt ratios, to produce strong, smooth,non-slip acceleration that can provide the sportyacceleration normally associated with solid gear-on-gearmanual transmissions.

    Engine

The sleek and stylish new DN-01 gets its satisfying surgeof acceleration from a slimly configured 680cm³ 52° V-twin engine that is based on the unit that now powersHonda’s popular Deauville and Transalp mid-displacement road bikes. Providing strong performancefor both exhilarating boulevard prowling and smooth, comfortable cruising on high-speed motorways, thiscompact, liquid-cooled engine features highlyresponsive PGM-FI electronic fuel injection and free-flowing four-valve heads that ensure smoother, moreefficient flow of intake and exhaust gasses through theircombustion chambers for exhilarating thrusts ofacceleration at each twist of its throttle.

    Low Emissions

Like nearly all of Honda’s latest fuel-injected engines, the new DN-01 also features an integrated HECS3oxygen-sensing catalyser system that micro-managesthe air/fuel mixture to reduce emissions of harmfulexhaust gases to well below EURO-3 regulated levels.Featuring a large-capacity 300-cell catalyser elementinstalled in the forward chamber of its dual-chamberexhaust, this system effectively minimises emissions ofcarbon dioxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrousoxides (NOX) while maintaining strong and smoothperformance throughout the engine’s impressivepowerband.

    Easy, Multi-Mode Operation

To provide the strong, versatile performance that meetsthe needs and desires of a wide range of rider, HFT offerstwo fully automatic, infinitely variable transmission modes—‘D’ (Drive) mode for ordinary riding and ‘S’ (Sport)mode for a noticeably more sporty riding experiencewhich delivers quicker and sharper acceleration that trulyexcites. On top of these two automatic drive modes, thisversatile system also offers a push-button-selectable six-speed manual mode, which gives riders the option ofshifting up and down with a manual transmission feel. The DN-01’s HFT achieves an incomparably satisfyingriding feel coupled with exceptionally easy operation.Riders can enjoy the smooth, unruffled twist-and-gooperation of a laid-back high-performance scooter, orwith the flick of a switch start tearing up the road withthe direct throttle response offered by the DN-01’s sportyor manual transmission modes.

Starting up and starting out are as easy as pressingthe start button and then the ‘DN’ switch onthe right-side switch pod to engage the transmission. The HFT’s hydraulic clutch totally eliminates anyannoying ‘clunks’ as the drive gear is engaged, insteadsmoothly switching into gear with forward movementinitiated by a twist of the throttle.

    Innovative ‘Lock-Up’ System

The DN-01’s HFT also features a ‘lock-up’ system similarto that found in automotive automatic overdrives, whichprovides a more direct engine-to-rear wheel drive forstronger, sharper acceleration compared to otherautomatic or belt-drive systems. This fully automaticsystem also features a throttle-controlled ‘downshift’capability that works to maintain optimum power outputunder high-load conditions, such as when climbing steepgrades, by gradually reducing the drive ratio ina smooth, constant motion, as opposed to the steppeddownshifts associated with manual or conventionalmulti-speed automatic transmissions. In this way,the HFT offers the advantage of being able to handlehigher loads with better power transfer efficiency, thuspermitting more sporty acceleration than otherwisepossible with conventional belt-drive systems.

    Switch-Selectable Mechanical Neutral

Besides its remarkably smooth-operating hydraulicclutch, the HFT also features a mechanical neutral thatcan be accessed with the press of a button, whichcompletely disengages the hydraulic clutch, thuspermitting the engine to run or even be revved at stop, without simultaneously requiring that the brakes beengaged. The HFT is also designed to automaticallyswitch to this mechanical neutral whenever the engine isturned off, which facilitates motorcycle movement whenstopped, as its rear wheel drive is effectivelydisconnected from the transmission.

    DN-01 - 2008

    Chassis

With its startlingly modern looks and revolutionary HFT-equipped V-twin engine, the DN-01’s frame and chassiscomponents seem almost surprisingly ‘conventional.’ Itsdouble-cradle steel tube frame provides solid support forits engine, bodywork and suspension systems, ensuringexceptional riding ease and confident control in virtuallyall riding situations. The frame’s excellent rigidity andfront weight bias ensure a smoother, more confidenthigh-speed ride compared to virtually any twist-and-golarge-format scooter while offering lighter, swifterhandling than most cruisers. The DN-01’s more laid-back American-style cruiser riding position andmotorcycle-like knee grip greatly enhances the rider’ssense of oneness with the machine. Likewise, its solidhandling stability and luxurious riding comfort are almostunprecedented in the Custom class.

The frame’s bolt-on steel tube seat rail providesa secure mount for rider and passenger while hoveringlow over the rear tyre for a comfortable low seat heightand easy reach to the ground, as well as a heightenedsense of riding ‘in’ the DN-01, rather than simply on topof it. Making a large contribution to this sensation, as wellas to the DN-01’s light, responsive handling, isa dual-element 15.1-litre fuel tank that carries the bulk ofits load low in the chassis for enhanced mass-centralisation.

    Sporty Cruiser Control

The DN-01’s relatively long 1,605mm wheelbase andmid-position 28° caster angle provide the base for itseasy-going Performance Cruiser riding proportions withrelaxed yet responsive control and a steady feel atthe handlebars. Its 41mm front fork offers up ample traveland excellent response in both straight-line cruises andspirited blasts through the hills when called upon toperform. At the back, the DN-01’s wide-rimmed twinfive-spoke wheel is held by an impressive single-sidedPro-Arm swingarm surrounding its quiet, maintenance-free driveshaft for a provocative look combined withsuperb tracking performance. The rear wheel’s wide,low-profile 190/50-17 rear tyre also looks the part withfat, low-profile cruising cool backed up by swift, light-handling performance. A smoothly compliantMonoshock rear suspension system soaks upthe bumps with 120mm of travel that plays a big part inthe DN-01’s luxurious riding comfort while maintaining itsclean, uncluttered lines and steady handling.

    Advanced Combined Antilock Brakes

The DN-01 offers the excellent braking feel andconfidently responsive control of Honda’s mostadvanced Combined Antilock Brake System. Up front, this system consists of a lightweight pair of Combinedthree-piston front callipers that firmly grip large 296mmfloating rotors between their sintered metal pads.Attractive five-point inner rotors contribute to reducedunsprung weight. At the rear, a 276mm rotor mountedbetween the Pro-Arm swingarm and the wheel isefficiently stopped by a compact dual-piston calliperattached to the swingarm in a conventional setup thatprovides sporty braking control to match the new CBF’saggressive riding capability.

Like other so-equipped Honda street bikes, the DN-01’s Combined Brake System links the rearbrake pedal to the centre piston of its left-side three-piston front brake calliper to provide a measured balanceof front brake control whenever the rear brake is firmlyused.

  • EU-EN – 9/11

    DN-01 - 2008

Stronger pressure applied to the rear brake pedal resultsin just enough front brake engagement to providesa positive balance of front and rear braking forces forsmoothly controlled operation. The remaining fivepistons of the two three-piston front brake callipers arecontrolled by the hand brake lever in a conventionalmanner, providing reassuringly strong braking control tomatch the DN-01’s remarkably sporty riding capability.

The DN-01 also features a handy one-touch parkingbrake lever for added security and peace-of-mind whenstopped.

    High-Performance ABS

The new DN-01 also features Honda’s advanced, compact and lightweight Antilock Brake System, whichcomplements the responsive control of its CombinedBrake System with smooth, confidence-inspiring brakeoperation over variable road surfaces or less than idealriding conditions.

Operating in precisely the same way as Honda’s otherABS-equipped models, the DN-01’s Antilock BrakeSystem ECU continuously monitors the small wheelspeed sensor pulsar rings at the centres ofthe front-right brake rotor and the rear brake rotor, reacting instantly to the most minute variations inthe relative speed of its two wheels. The system smoothlyand precisely predicts and counteracts tyre slip before ithappens, particularly when braking over uneven orslippery road surfaces. With ultra-precise control, thissystem maintains just enough brake pressure for smoothand steady deceleration that greatly enhancesconfidence in one’s ability to stop quickly and surely.

Confident riding also requires strongly assured brakingperformance, and the DN-01’s advanced Combined-ABS provides an exceptional level of smoothlyresponsive braking control to give both seasonedexperts and less experienced riders more confidentstopping power in situations where optimal brakingcapability is crucial.

    Equipment

    Honda Ignition Security System (HISS)

Like most of Honda’s larger displacement motorcycles, the new DN-01 is also fully equipped with the highlycapable Honda Ignition Security System (HISS), whichfeatures a fail-safe electronic interlock to preventthe engine from being started by anything other thanthe machine’s two original keys, thus providing effectiveprotection against ride-away theft. Designed to totallydisable the engine at the very heart of its ignition system, the HISS system cannot be bypassed by hot-wiringthe ignition or exchanging the ignition switch module.
