What is Simulcast?• Simultaneous broadcast provides wide-area

coverage using a single frequency pair

• In cases of frequency shortage, Simulcast is often the only possible solution to roll out a wide area network.

• Typical customers:– National & regional utilities– National & regional transport– Pipelines– Fire-fighters– Ambulances

Simulcast Overview

• For each channel the samefrequency is used by all base stations in the network

• When roaming from one base station to another handover is seamless

• Voting, synchronisation and equalisation are provided by the network

• The radio network acts as a “single virtual repeater”

SELEX ECOS-D Overview

• Conforms with ETSI DMR Standard• Interoperable with MOTOTRBO radios

• Instantaneous Analogue/Digital Call Switchover– Smooth analogue to digital migration for users– No need to change the installed base of analogue terminals

• Simulcast benefits– Wide area coverage with a single frequency pair– Seamless handover

• Fully automatic synchronisation and equalisation– No need for periodic re-alignment – Lower maintenance cost compared to traditional Simulcast

• All network architectures supported– Star, Chain & Mixed

• Synchronous systems need periodic realignment to compensate:– SDH/PDH link random delay @ switch-on– Copper wire frequency response variation over lifetime– RF oscillator drift

• Preventing problems such as:– Unexpected frequency, phase and amplitude variation for RX mobile – Problems in voting the best received signal

No Need For Periodic Realignment

ECOS-D fully automatic synchronisation and equalisation eliminates realignment

Simulcast Case Studies

With 23 ECOS-D base stations, coverage of the 6,000 km2 region – including Luxembourg and the Brabant region - has been guaranteed, providing Electrabel with voice services to hundreds of users. Future enhancement will be provide data applications (SCADA) to power distribution substations.

Customer: ELECTRABELLocation: Belgium- Luxembourg

Customer: Autostrade del BrenneroLocation: ItalyNetwork architecture was planned to give coverage to the “Autostrade del Brennero”motorway - tunnels and highway security centres included. The system, divided into three different radio sub-networks for north, centre and south areas, is comprised of 30 base stations. As requested by the customer, each base station has two different auto-equalized backbone links, utilising fibre and existing copper wires.
