What does a rotary valve do?

The main purpose of a rotary valve to maintain a pressure differential.

This is done by creating an air seal using a multi-vane rotor.

Rotors rotate within the valve housing with typical clearances of 0.13mm giving an air seal while feeding material.

Rotary Valve Applications

Rotary Valve Applications

Metering Application

Silo discharge pneumatic conveying system.

Valve used to meter product into a conveying line at a given rate while maintaining an air lock.

Rotary Valve Applications

Explosion & Flame Containment

Explosion & flame containment – “APS” Autonomous Protective System.

Rotary valves commonly used to protect systems, containing the explosion within the system and stopping the flame path through the valve.

Page 13: DMN Training Presentation

ATEX Regulations

Three basic components required to cause an explosion.

• Fuel (Dust)• Ignition source (Non protected electronics)• Oxygen

Page 14: DMN Training Presentation

ATEX RegulationsTypical DUST ATEX Zoning

• Loading Hopper and valve most likely area for explosion to occur (Zone 20)

• Area directly outside of loading hopper (Zone 21)

• Further away from concentrated dust area explosion least likely of zoned areas (Zone 22)

Page 15: DMN Training Presentation

ATEX RegulationsTypical GAS ATEX Zoning

• Underground fuel cell most likely area for explosion to occur (Zone 0)

• Fuel pump area (Zone 1)

• Further away from concentrated gas area explosion least likely of zoned areas (Zone 2)

Rotor DesignsReplaceable blades – Used with abrasive materials. Blades can be easily replaced to maintain tight clearances rather replace complete rotor.

Reduced capacity rotor – Used on metering applications when a specified throughput is required with a good level of accuracy.

Page 17: DMN Training Presentation

Rotor DesignsSemi end-disc rotor – Used when handling abrasive material offering additional wear protection

Closed end rotor – Commonly used when handling pelletized products such as plastic pellets. Closed end disc gives protection against end cover wear.

Page 18: DMN Training Presentation

Rotor DesignsScalloped pocket / Radius pocket rotor – Smoothed root pockets used to help discharging sticky / hydroscopic products.

Reduced capacity, multi-pocket, dosing rotor – Mostly used in the food and pharmaceutical industries when handling expensive active ingredients.
