Dreamin’ with Gov. Dave . . . Avoid the pot-holes! With all the crazy weather we’ve had this Winter and Spring (?), many of our roads have almost become an obstacle course, wrecking havoc on our car’s tires and suspension systems. And that makes me wonder if that funky weather has also tossed a monkey wrench into our finely-tuned Op-timist road to success. I think it’s time to take that Planning Guide out and review where we are and if we’ve hit any personal or club “pot-holes” that have slowed or distracted us from what we want to accomplish this year – and there’s only four months left in this, our Centennial Year. As a reminder, here are a few areas where we need to check our pulse, and see if it’s keeping time with our goals.

How are we doing on the social “fun” meter? Are our gatherings lively, with a good measure of good-natured bantering back and forth? Are we keeping the “business” to a minimum and instead enjoying learning new things from an interesting guest (or member) speaker?

How about our service to youth? How many young lives have we posi-tively impacted with meaningful and fun activities and events? Have we added a new project or event to reach even more kids?

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing can dis-turb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and pros-perity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of every-thing and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achieve-ments of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living crea-ture you meet a smile. To give so much time to the im-provement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Editor: Curt Sandberg THANKS to everyone that submitted articles for this newsletter. For those who wish to submit articles for future issues, please email them to me at [email protected] by the 27th of each month. Thank you!

How about our labor force? Have we asked friends and co-workers to join us in our service to kids? It’s the best way to infuse new blood into our group and let others enjoy and experi-ence the good feelings and warm smiles from the kids we serve?

How about our fundraisers? Do we need to give them a shot in the arm, a face-lift or an extra boost with new Optimistic mem-ber volunteers?

And are we spreading the Good News about what we are doing for kids and the positive impact that is having? Are we getting good media coverage in the local newspapers, electronic media and social media?

Are we partnering with other groups and organizations to reach more youth, and are we looking for opportunities to add a Club Within a Club (it only takes a minimum of 15 new members added on the same day, with one special interest).

I would ask each of us to stop for a moment and seriously consider each of these questions. Let’s avoid, or fill those pot-holes and create a smooth road ahead – an Optimistic, service-inspired grand highway. Let’s keep on dream-in’ about our greater achievements of the future! Your dreamin’ Optimistic Governor, Dave Dave Martin DMM Governor [email protected]

Your Feedback, Please! Greetings Lt. Governors and club officers. We are just wondering how many of you have used the new “DMM Quick Reference Guide” or how many of you use it routinely. If feedback to Mike Kliewer or me, the producers of this reference guide, is any indication, it appears as though it is not being used as we had hoped. The “guide” is full of links for most any question which you may encounter. Have you faced a ques-tion on policy or procedure which baffled you? Have you questions about what is necessary to achieve various recognition levels? ALL the answers you need are contained in the form of a link that will take you directly to the answer. Our ask of all of you, is to provide us feedback and areas which need a correction. Or maybe you have locat-ed a link that has been changed at the OI level. Whatever the case, we are open to your feedback. Please let us know what you think. You can find the DMM Quick Refer-ence Guide on the DMM website www.optimist-dmm.org then click on District Business. It is at the top of the list. We look forward to hearing from you. SFMO Supports Camp Bring it On This is a photo of the Sioux Falls Morning Optimist Club donating $20,000 to the Sanford Cure Kids Cancer group for Camp Bring it On. Camp Bring it On offers kids with cancer the opportunity to spend a week full of fun activities and socialization with others who share a similar diagnosis and to perhaps escape their struggles for a short period of time. It also allows their families to focus on their other siblings if they have them and to know that their kids will be well cared for and having the time of their lives creating memories and friendships with the other campers and staff of the camp. The Sioux Falls Morning Optimist Club started this camp 14 years ago and since 2007 has donated $207,400 to support the camp.

In Minnesota and across the U.S., too many boys and girls go without a bed - or even a pillow - to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and their health. That's where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. We're a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assem-bling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. Come work side by side with family, friends and neighbors whose generous donations have made it possible for us to help kids in our community that are sleeping on the floor!

Together We Make A Difference: WHEN: August 8, 2 pm-to 4:30 pm There are 57 clubs divided into 9 Zones that create the DMM District. Each attendee will have a packet of information that will follow the agenda. WHERE:/Registration: https://www.optimist-dmm.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/2019-Convention-Registration.pdf Ramada Inn Grand Forks, ND-1205 N 43 Street WHY: Leadership development is the foundation used to build your club’s culture and strengths. The duties of these three leadership offices are intertwined: meaning - the management team must have a clear understanding of what and how each position contributes to a successful year. This seminar will destroy the meth of silo training and bring together leadership that promotes relationships, communication and explains why it is important to work together so we can make a difference. WHAT: Attendees will increase your management skills, recognize how important it is to promote and share infor-mation, set goals, use tools, establish priorities and complete administrative processes for the success of your mem-bers, your community youth, and district leadership. Attendees will learn how to bust the silo mentality and create a cohesive transition that will positively impact club operations, expand servant hearts, increase membership morale and may contribute to the overall success of club retention, mentoring, service to youth and club culture. Networking Opportunity and Building on Club Strengths: AGENDA: 1:55pm Each President, Secretary and Treasurer and their assigned Zone Lt. Gov. will be clustered with the Lt. Gov acting as the facilitator. 2pm-3pm: Making a plan with division of responsibilities and creating a club legacy 3pm-4pm: Creating goals, financial stability and verifying the action through relationship building 4pm-4:30pm: Living the Optimist Creed through publicizing events, programs, activities and service to the community TRAINERS: OI Club Fitness Committee member Bob McFayden and Sally Damm Norby Governor Elect 2019-2020, and other to be identified at a later date.
