    IntroductionSafety warning

    This Technical Data Book contains com-prehensive in ormation on SEMPERIT Carand Van Tyres. The technical data andother details on tyres and accessories

    have been compiled to re ect as exactlyand completely as possible the currentstate o development and are based onETRTO1), ISO2) and WdK/DIN 3) standards.Most o the Semperit tyres comply withDOT4) regulations and are marked accor-dingly. They are homologated in accor-dance with the relevant ECE5) regulation(ZR tyres without operational code in ac-cordance with EU guideline 92/23) and are

    hence also homologated in accordancewith current EU6) tyre regulation.This databook is intended or in orma-tion and instruction only. No liabilitywhatsoever will be accepted or damage,regardless o its nature and its legal basis,arising rom advice given in this book.

    Tyre safety tips

    We recommend that the in ation pressure o every tyre is checked at least every 14days. Avoid driving over sharp-edged or

    pointed objects.Lower in ation pressures, greater loadsor higher speeds than specifed by the ve-hicle and/or tyre manu acturer all shortenthe service life o tyres and can result instructural damages.

    We recommend that new tyres are runin at moderate speeds or the frst 120 to190 miles (200 to 300 km) to roughen thetread sur ace. The tyre does not achie-ve its best per ormance until a ter thisrunning-in period.

    We recommend all wheel positions o apassenger car are ftted with tyres o thesame tread design.

    Please observe the detailed operatinginstructions on page 36 .

    Load Index (LI) The Load Index is a numerical code associated with the maximumload a tyre can carry ( see also page 39 ).

    Speed Index (SI)The Speed Index indicates the maximum speed at which the tyre can carry a loadcorresponding to its Load Index.

    Units of measurement andde nitions of the technical data

    The technical data in the tables complygenerally with international standards.All dimensions in the tables o thisdatabook are given in millimetres (mm),

    i not indicated in a di erent way.The rim diameter is given in inch code.Tyre ranges on new rim types may alsobe marked in mm.Construction measurements are theo-retical values or the design o the tyre:The width is relative to the smoothsidewall, the outer diameter to the treadcentre.Maximum measurements are actualoperating measurements o the in atedtyre (operating pressure) in the unloadedstate. They include growth but excludedynamic distortions. The width is themax. permitted tyre width, including side-wall decorative markings, when the tyre ismounted on the correct rim.

    The outer diameter is the max. permitteddiameter. The max. measurements arebinding or vehicle designers .The static radius is the distance betweenthe wheel centre and the ground contactpatch under max. load at the recom-mended tyre pressure.

    The rolling circumference is the distancecovered by a point on the circum erencewhen the tyre revolves once at 60 km/h(37 mph).The load capacity in kilograms (kg)is weight in the sense o a mass.Tyre pressure (in ation pressure) is givenin bar as an overpressure (cold tyre), ordriving speeds up to 160 km/h (100 mph) .Vehicle designers should bear in mind themaximum values or tyre outer diameterand width when planning the wheelspace of a vehicle , i all standardapproved tyres are to ft without anyrestrictions.Should this by way o exception not bepossible, the sa ety risk must beeliminated by taking appropriatemeasures.

    Car rims

    The rim is the part o the wheel whichsupports the tyre.

    1. Important elements of the rim

    Rim ange = lateral support or the tyrebead

    Flange distance = clear rim width

    Bead seat = base on which the tyre beadis seated

    Well = inner side o the rim

    Diameter = specifed diameterange/bead seat

    Hump = continuous raised section othe rim bead seat which enables a betterftting o tubeless tyre beads atlow pressure.*)

    2. Types of rims

    The well-base rim is virtually the only

    type o rim used on cars, caravans andother car trailers:

    Well-base rims = one-piece rims,deepened well or easier tyre ftting,5 tapered bead seat,x in the wheelsize designation.

    Virtually only J and B versions o thewellbase rim are used and these areexplained here in more detail.

    I rubber valves (snap-in type) are used onrims or higher speeds, these must beftted with valve supports where neces-sary. Also re er to the section Fitting thetyre.

    3. Wheel disc (nave)

    The wheel disc is the linking elementbetween the rim and the axle hub. O allthe measurements or wheel linkingelements centre bore and bore diameter,bolt hole type and offset depth the latteris a particularly important actor or the

    ree movement o the tyre in any wheelposition.

    (O set depth = 0, when the rim centre andhub contact area o the wheel disc are inline).

    4. Wheel strength

    The wheel manu acturer must confrmthat the wheel strength is adequate oreach particular application.

    5. Lateral and true running of the wheels(without tyres)

    On cars which are virtually all able to

    considerably exceed 100 km/h (62 mph),it is particularly important that the wheelso the vehicle are well-centred .

    On these vehicles there should beas little radial and lateral run-out aspossible on both bead seat/ ange sideso the rim, in order to achieve goodsmooth running .

    The standard shows max. tolerances o1.20 mm. This dimension is or the centreo the tyre seat area or the centre o the

    ange height. All measurements,particularly the uniformity , should bewell within these tolerances.

    The following instructions must be observed toensure vehicle safety at all

    times. Disregarding thetting instructions could

    endanger the safety of thetyre tter or driver. This applies in parti-cular to in ation pressure.

    Non-compliance with these instructionsmeans risking tyre damage which, ifserious enough, may result in a tyrebursting. It is a hazard like this that cancause traf c accidents involving vehicle

    damage and/or serious personal injury. Correct choice of tyre and wheel

    Tyres can be properly maintained onlyi they are chosen in accordance withvehicle documents and recommendationso the tyre manu acturer.The use o higher grade tyres o thesame size is permitted: Higher speedcategories, i.e. H instead o T. Greaterload capacity, i.e. Load Index 82 instead o80. Both actors may be combined, i.e.greater load and speed.If tyres are changed to a different size,all legal requirements and regulations,as well as the recommendations of thevehicle, wheel and tyre manufacturersmust be complied with. In any event,the reedom o motion o the wheel andadequate load capacity o the tyre mustbe observed.Tyre sizes and rims not entered inthe vehicle registration document mayonly be ftted i the vehicle and tyremanu acturer issue a certi cate of non-objection or i a public authority issuesftting approval a ter an inspection by ano fcially authorised expert *).80 and 82 series passenger car tyres

    o the same size can be interchangedwithout new approval and without any

    new entry in the vehicle documents i LIand SI o the interchanging size are oan equivalent or higher-grade quality.Example: 155/80 R 13 79T replaces

    155 R 13 79T.Mixed tyre constructions or cars,caravans and other car trailers are notpermitted: Tyres ftted on any one vehiclemust all be either radial or cross-ply.(Exception: Use o the spare tyre in anemergency).The same applies to the choice o wheels(rims): The standard wheels approved bythe vehicle manu acturer must be used asrecommended.The tyre widths given in the tables onpages 12 -21 and 24-2 7 re er to themeasuring rim (bold print). In the event oa change in the rim width by +12 inch, thetyre width changes by approx. +5 mm. Winter tyres

    Winter tyres are clearly superior in the

    cold months o the year; they o er awider margin o sa ety and bettereconomy when the temperature dropsbelow 7 C.Winter tyres approved or a max. speedlower than that o the vehicle may only beftted i the max. speed o these tyres isdisplayed in ull view o the driver, e. g.on a clearly visible sticker on thedashboard *).

    This maximum tyre speed must not beexceeded.A combination o summer andwinter tyres on passenger cars is notrecommended. In most Europeancountries either summer or winter (M+S)tyres are specifed or any one axle; insome countries **) this applies to all ourwheel positions.*) Exception: This does not apply to the UK.

    **) Exception: In Austria, passenger car winter tyres withless than 4 mm remaining tread depth are no longerlegally considered to be winter tyres.

    Winter tyres have to meet specialrequirements, meaning that the legalminimum tread depth o 1.6 mm isinadequate. The suitability limit for

    winter use is a tread depth of 4 mm. Inthe interest o sa ety, Semperit recom-mends replacing winter tyres be ore thetread depth drops below 4 mm or winterservice.Top sa ety in winter can be provided onlyby true winter tyres on all axle positions(4 tyres).

    Snow ake designation (in USA andCanada): This additional marking on

    an M+S tyre shows that the tyre meetsprescribed test criteria and ensures goodwinter properties.SAFETYWARNING! Fitting the tyre

    If a tyre is not properlytted it may burst. The

    energy released in a blow-out can cause fatal injuriesso tyres must be tted byan expert. Only approved

    tting tools and lubricants may be used.Observe all tting instructions.

    Be ore the old tyre is taken o , the valveinsert must be unscrewed and removedto ensure all air has escaped.The new tyre and rim must havematching diameters and be approved asa combination suitable or the vehiclemodel concerned. Only rims o the correctsize in per ect condition and ree o rustshould be used. They must not bedamaged, out o shape or worn.When ftting new tube-type tyres,always use new tubes . As tubes stretchin service, there is a risk o olds ormingin old tubes, so re-used tubes couldsuddenly tear.For sa ety reasons, tubeless tyres should

    always be ftted with new valves .

    I rubber valves (snap-in types) are usedor tubeless tyres, the vehicle

    manu acturers instructions must becomplied with in all cases. A valve

    support (i.e. a stopper on the rim itsel orthe hubcap) should be ftted, i H, V, W, Yor ZR tyres are specifed or the vehicle.This ensures that valves are not orced oat high speeds.Always coat the tyre beads and the rimwith a tting lubricant recommended bythe tyre manu acturer. This applies inparticular to low section tyres. Never usegreases or other hydrocarbons or this

    purpose.While the tyre is being in ated, the wheelmust remain frmly secured on themounting machine. Never in ate anunsecured tyre . I a loose tyre bursts, thewheel could be thrown around, causingdamage.Keep a reasonable distance rom anytyre that is being in ated. Make use o asu fciently long and secured extension

    hose with an integrated pressure gauge.Never bend over a tyre while it is beingin ated!

    When ftting tubeless car tyres, careshould be taken to ensure that the tyrebeads coming rom the well-base frstclear the hump in the rim shoulder. Toavoid cracks in the bead core, the poppressure necessary should not exceed3.3 bar. I the tyre does not pop into place

    even at this pressure, the pressure mustbe lowered, and the cause identifed andeliminated. Then the procedure can berepeated.Only when the tyre beads are seatedcorrectly on the rim shoulder may thepressure be increased to achieve therequired press-ft and frm grip on the rim

    anges. However, this tting pressure should not exceed the max. pressure

    given in the tables by more than 50% orbe more than 4.0 bar.

    A ter this, adjust the pressure to theoperating pressure specifed by thevehicle manu acturer (also seeSemperit tyre pressure table).

    Car tyres should be dynamicallybalanced to achieve smooth running.

    Fitting the wheel to the vehicle

    Vehicle axle data such as toe-in, camberangle and wheel castor as well as axlealignment must be checked and, inecessary, be adjusted to withintolerances. Only then should new tyresbe ftted.

    When ftting a tyre, make sure that thewheel is centred on the axle hub. Inecessary, re-balance the wheelelectronically once it is ftted on thevehicle.Valves should be ftted with valve caps pre erably with a sealing ring as theyprotect the delicate valve inserts and theinside o the tyre.When mounting wheel caps and wheeltrim rings , su fcient clearance to the tyresidewall must be maintained. The wheelcap or wheel trim ring may not come incontact with the tyre under any operatingconditions (e. g. brutal brakingmaneuvers, ast cornering). The diametero the wheel cap and the wheel trim ringmay not extend beyond the rim angeedge. This applies in particular to tyreswith rim protection ( ange rib).Directional tyres must be ftted so thatthey roll in the direction o the arrow onthe sidewall as the vehicle moves

    orward.

    Exception: For a short-term use as atemporary ftment spare; but revert tospecifed ftted position at the earliestpossible opportunity!

    Modern asymmetrical tyres are requentlynon-directional. These tyres must be fttedwith the sidewall Outside on the outsideo the vehicle so that their asymmetricaltreads can be used to best e ect.Tyres with both o these properties, i.e.that are directional and asymmetrical,must in addition be ftted on the correctside o the vehicle, i.e. on the le t or onthe right to comply with both o the in-

    structions above.

    Tyre pressure

    Incorrect tyre pressurecan lead to the inside ofthe tyre being damaged.This can result in tyreproblems or even a

    blow-out. Hidden tyre problems are notrecti ed by adjusting the tyre pressure.

    The tyre must be in ated to the pressurespeci ed by the vehicle and tyremanufacturer. This varies depending onthe load and service conditions.

    The pressure always re ers to the cold tyre and must not be allowed to all belowthis value. The pressure inside warmtyres driving causes heat build-up isnaturally higher. So never reduce thepressure o warm tyres. Once they cooldown, their pressure could all below thespecifed minimum tyre pressure .Tyre pressure must be checked regularlyevery 14 days on the cold tyre. The spare

    tyre may not be orgotten.Incorrect tyre pressure causes prematureand/or uneven tread wear. Under-in ated tyres have a higher rolling resistance , andthis means a higher fuel consumption .

    The tyre pressure values or car tyresgiven in table 1 and 2 are minimumpressures or speeds up to 160 km/h(100 mph). They may be increased, or

    example, or reasons o driving stability.3.2 bar is the maximum tyre pressure onstandard version car tyres up to andincluding Speed Index T; 3.5 bar orH-, V-, W-, Y- and ZR-, as well as M+S andXL/Rein orced tyres.These values may not be exceeded toensure that the structural per ormance othe tyres and rims is not impaired.ZR tyres without service description have

    Tyre damage

    Most tyre damage is caused by incorrecttyre pressure , so we recommend aregular tyre pressure check every 2weeks. When the car has been drivenand the tyres are warm, it is normal orthe tyre pressure to increase . Do notreduce extra pressure caused by a heatbuild-up.

    A balanced, even style of driving isbenefcial or the tyres and theenvironment. Harsh acceleration, brakingwith locked wheels and ast steeringmovements shorten the service life otyres.This applies equally to other types otyre strain such as severe scu fng alongthe kerb, or driving over rough sur aces.This can cause hidden or visible damage

    to tyres.Sudden vibrations o the steering wheelcold point to tyre damage. All thevehicles tyres should be checkedimmediately or damage.Overstressing o tyres (excessive speedor overloading) is to be avoided. This hasthe same critical e ect as under-in ation and can cause heat damage to the tyre.

    Tyre Rotation on a vehicle

    The tyres on a vehicle should be rotatedregularly to help ensure even wear andmaximum tread life.

    Tyres should be rotated as instructed inthe vehicle owners manual, with specialattention being given to the recommen-ded interval for rotating tyres. Unlessotherwise specifed by the vehicle manu-

    acturer, tyres should be rotated every10,000 to 12,000 kilometers or evenearlier i the tread shows signs o unevenwear. In the latter case, the vehicles wheelalignment and pertinent mechanical com-ponents should be checked and corrected,i need be.Full-size spare tyres (not temporaryspares) o the same size and design as thetyres in use on the vehicle should be in-

    cluded in the tyre rotation. In conjunctionwith the rotation, the ull-size spare tyresin ation pressure should be checked and,i need be, corrected.A tyres in ation pressure must corre-spond to what is specifed in the vehicleowners manual or the respective tyreposition (recommended in ation pres-sure may di er or the ront- and rear-axletyres).

    Tyre rotation may e ect the tyre pressuremonitoring system (TPMS). The vehicleowners manual or a qualifed servicepro essional should be consulted in the

    event that the TPMS has to be adjusted orrecalibrated.The rolling direction o directional tyresshould not be reversed when the tyres arerotated.Mixing tyres should be avoided Tyre size, Load Index (LI) and Speed Index(SI) at all wheel positions should be in ac-cordance with the vehicle manu acturersspecifcation. In many countries, this is alegal requirement. Driving with a non-recommended mix o tyre sizes, designsand Speed Indices can be dangerous. Inthe event that tyres o di erent sizes, de-signs, Load or Speed Index are to be fttedon a vehicle, the vehicle manu acturersrecommendations should be heeded and/ or the advice o a qualifed tyre specialistsought.Some vehicles leave the actory withdi erent tyre sizes on the ront and rearaxles. This confguration must not bechanged unless approved by the vehiclemanu acturer.No more than one temporary spareshould be used on a vehicle at any onetime. A tyre o this kind should only beused at a certain speed and or a certaindistance, as indicated on the tyre sidewalland/or on a label attached to the tyre orthe wheel.Mounting new tyres on the rear axle

    It is recommended that all tyres used onthe vehicle be replaced at the same time.I this is not the case, at least all the tyreson the same axle should be replaced atthe same time.

    I only one axle set o tyres is replaced, itis recommended to ft the newest tyreson the rear axle. This may complicatetyre rotation and caution is advised i the

    tyres di er in terms o state o wear, size,design and Speed Index, or example.In this case it is strongly recommendedthat a trained tyre specialist be consulted.The point o the above mounting recom-mendation is to increase traction on therear axle. This is important in avoidingoversteer and loss o vehicle stability onslippery sur aces.Additional important tips regarding tyre

    positionThe spare tyres date o manu actureand condition (e. g. signs o cracking,remaining tread depth) should be checkedregularly. The spare tyre may have to bereplaced. For 4-wheel drive and AllWheeldrive vehicles, any special tyre ftmentrequirements in the vehicle ownersmanual should be heeded especially ithe vehicle is equipped with electronic

    systems such as antilock brakes, tractioncontrol or stability control. Damage to thevehicle or its transmission can result ithese requirements are not ollowed.Winter tyres should be ftted to all wheelpositions. They should not be mixed withallseason or summer tyres. I winter tyresare, nonetheless, mounted on just oneaxle, this should be the rear axle. Thisincreases rearaxle traction and helps to

    avoid oversteer and loss o vehicle stabili-ty on slippery roads.

    Tyre Storage Recommendations

    These recommendations are intendedor consumers. For commercial applica-

    tions o new and waste tyres (tyre dealersand eets), there may be more stringentand legal restrictions. Please check localregulations.

    Tyres are compounded to resist normaldeterioration caused e.g. by sunlight,humidity and ozone. Nevertheless, storedtyres should be protected against theseand other potentially damaging condi-tions.

    The longer the storage period, the moreexposure there is to potential damage.

    A ter dismounting rom a vehicle thetyres should be thoroughly cleaned andinspected or damage. Remove all stonesand debris rom the grooves. Chalk mar-king the tyres with their wheel positions(FL or Front Le t, RR or Rear Right, etc.)will help to fnd the correct positionsaccording the rotational plan.

    General:

    DO STORE TYRES where it is clean,dark, dry and moderately ventilated.

    Moist conditions should be avoided.Tyres destined or retreading/repairingshould be thoroughly cleaned and driedout be ore such operations are per or-med.

    DO STORE TYRES at temperatures notexceeding 35C (95F), pre erable below25C (77F). Direct contact with hot pipesand radiators must be avoided.

    Also deeply cold temperatures, thosewell below the reezing point, mightlead to brittleness and tyres should becare ully warmed up be ore use.

    DO STORE TYRES, if outdoors , pro-tected by an opaque waterproo cove-ring, but avoid creating a heat box orsteam bath. Ensure proper ventilation.

    DO STORE TYRES, if outdoors, wheretyres are raised o the storage sur ace.

    AVOID STORING TYRES on piers, shipdecks, or other unprotected areas

    AVOID STORING TYRES, where they canbe damaged by passing objects - lawnmower, bicycle, or garden tools.

    AVOID STORING TYRES where the areais wet, oily, and/or greasy such as withgasoline or petroleum-based products.Also, do not store on or against sensitivesur aces where staining can take place.

    AVOID STORING TYRES in the proximityo chemical agents like solvents, uels,oils, hydrocarbons, paint, acids, disin ec-tants, etc.

    AVOID STORING TYRES where subjectto extreme temperatures, direct sunlightor artifcial light with a high ultra-violetcontent. Room lighting with ordinaryincandescent lamps is pre erable to

    uorescent tubes.

    Never store them near battery chargers,ovens, or open fres.

    AVOID STORING TYRES on black as-phalt or other heat absorbent sur acesand on highly re ective sur aces (i.e.,sand or snow covered ground)

    AVOID STORING TYRES in the samearea as an electric motor or other ozonegenerating source. I there is a question,

    check ozone levels to be sure they donot exceed 0.08 ppm.

    Do not use tyres as a workbench or toolstand. Soldering irons, power drill andtools can damage a tyre. Never put aburning cigarette on a pile o tyres.

    Do not store other items on top o a tyre,especially where staining o the sur acewould be a concern.

    Loose tyres or tyres mounted on rims, but not installed on a vehicle: DO STORE TYRES so that tyres retain

    Tyres installed on a vehicle in long termstorage:

    If possible, store the vehicle on blocksto remove all weight rom the tyres and

    cover the tyres to protect them rom envi-ronmental exposure. If the vehicle cannot be blocked up fromthe storage sur ace, completely unloadthe vehicle, so minimum weight will reston the tyres. The storage sur ace shouldbe frm, reasonably level, well drained,and clean. In cases where the tyres will be suppor -ting the vehicle, it is permissible to in atethe tyres to the maximum pressure listedon the sidewall. Be sure to return thein ation pressure to recommended usagepressure be ore operating the vehicle. In cases where the tyres will be suppor -ting the vehicle, it is recommended thatthe vehicle be moved every month tominimize ozone cracking in the bulge areaand also to minimize a at spot romdeveloping. I the tyres do develop atspots, this will usually disappear in ashort period o service.

    Before Returning Tyres (including full-sizespares) to Service

    Inspect tyres to be sure they are cleanand ree rom oreign objects. Remove any water that has collected in

    an unmounted tyre. When using a spare tyre, have it checked

    or proper in ation pressure and conditi-on such as cracking in the tread or side-walls, weather checking, and other signso prolonged storage by a ull-service tyredealer, be ore placing it in service on thevehicle.

    Full-Size Spare Tyres

    Full size spares, o the same size and typeas the road tyre, require special mainte-nance considerations.

    The spare tyre position on the vehicle isrequently not suitable or long term sto-

    rage or ull size spare tyres that are notproperly maintained /rotated as recom-mended. Tyres contain special ingredientssuch as waxes, etc. to protect the rubber.These special tyre ingredients normallymigrate throughout the tyre when in ser-vice and protect the tyre against deterio-ration caused e.g. by sunlight, humidity

    and ozone.There ore, ull size spares that are le t

    or prolonged periods o time in thespare tyre position should be inspected,properly in ated just like road tyres, andincluded in the regular tyre rotation.

    Tyre repair

    SAFETY WARNING:Serious injury or deathmay result from a tyredisablement that is caused

    by failing to observe the following safetyand maintenance information.

    During its service li e, a tyre undergoes avariety o di erent usage conditions andcan be damaged in many di erent ways.This damage can result rom punctures,impacts, cuts, etc. Tyre damage canreduce a tyres structural integrity by, orexample: Air loss resulting in underin ated

    service conditions which lead tointernal structural damage;

    Direct damage to tyre componentssuch as rubber and plies;

I tyre damageis suspected or ound, it should becare ully assessed by a trained specialistimmediately.

    A consumer should never repair adamaged tyre. Only a trained tyrespecialist who can base his assessmenton a thorough and comprehensiveinspection o the specifc tyre candetermine whether an individual tyre issuitable or repair or should be removed

    rom service. This assessment shouldalso take into account the completeservice li e history o the tyre including

    in ation, load, operating conditions, etc.I the tyre specialist decides to repair thetyre, then he should strictly ollow allappropriate national tyre industry repairstandards regarding the inspectionprocess and repair procedures.Semperit is not responsible or thespecialists decisions or the repaired tyre.Semperit advises i a tyre is returnedunder complaint and reason or the

    products disablement is in any wayassociated with a repair or the reasonor repair the manu acturers warranty is

    invalidatedIt is orbidden by law to regroove cartyres.

    Tyre service life for passengercar and light truck

    The tyre industry has long recognizedthe consumers role in the regular care

    and maintenance o their tyres. The pointat which a tyre is replaced is a decision

    or which the owner o the tyre isresponsible. The tyre owner shouldconsider actors to include serviceconditions, maintenance history, storageconditions, visual inspections, anddynamic per ormance. The consumershould consult a tyre service pro essionalwith any questions about tyre service li e.

    The following information and recom-mendations are made to aid in assessingthe point of maximum service life.

    Tyres are designed and built to providemany thousands o miles o excellentservice. For maximum beneft, tyres mustbe maintained properly to avoid tyredamage and abuse that may result in tyredisablement. The service li e o a tyre is acumulative unction o the storage,

    stowing, rotation and service conditions,which a tyre is subjected to throughout itsli e (load, speed, in ation pressure, roadhazard injury, etc.). Since serviceconditions vary widely, accurately predicting the service life o any specifctyre in chronological time is not possible .

    The consumer plays an important rolein tyre maintenance.

    Tyres should be removed rom service ornumerous reasons, including tread worn

    down to minimum depth, damage orabuse (punctures, cuts, impacts, cracks,bulges, underin ation, overloading, etc).For these reasons tyres, including spares,must be inspected routinely, i.e., at leastonce a month. Regular inspectionbecomes particularly important the longera tyre is kept in service. I tyre damage issuspected or ound, Semperitrecommends that the consumer have the

    tyre inspected by a tyre servicepro essional. Consumers should use thisconsultation to determine i the tyres cancontinue in service. It is recommendedthat spare tyres be inspected at the sametime. This routine inspection should occurwhether or not the vehicle is equippedwith a tyre pressure monitoring system(TPMS).Consumers are strongly encouraged to be

    aware o their tyres visual condition.Also, they should be alert or any changein dynamic per ormance such asincreased air loss, noise or vibration.Such changes could be an indicator thatone or more o the tyres should beimmediately removed rom service toprevent a tyre disablement. Also, theconsumer should be the frst to recognizea severe in-service impact to a tyre and to

    ensure that the tyre is inspectedimmediately therea ter.Tyre storage, stowage and rotation arealso important to the service li e o thetyre. More in ormation regarding properstorage, stowage and rotation is locatedin other Semperit publications, whichare available upon request and throughits websites.

    Tyre service life recommendation

    Semperit is unaware o any technicaldata that supports a specifc tyre age orremoval rom service. However, as with

    other members o the tyre andautomotive industries, Semperitrecommends that all tyres (includingspare tyres) that were manu actured morethan ten (10) years previous 1)) be replacedwith new tyres, even when tyres appearto be usable rom their externalappearance and i the tread depth mayhave not reached the minimum wear outdepth. Vehicle manu acturers may

    recommend a di erent chronological ageat which a tyre should be replaced basedon their understanding o the specifcvehicle application; Semperitrecommends that any such instructionbe ollowed. Consumers should note thatmost tyres would have to be removed ortread wear-out or other causes be ore anyproscribed removal period. A statedremoval period in no way reduces theconsumers responsibility to replace tyresas needed.

    Minimum removal tread depth for pas-senger and light truck tyres

    1.6 mm is the most widely accepted mini-mum tread depth standard at which tyresshould be removed rom service.This standard has been adopted as a re-gulation by many o the worlds nationaltransportation authorities. As an indi-cation to the consumer, there are treadwear indicator bars in the main grooveso the tyre that become level with thetread sur ace at approximately 1.6 mm oremaining tread.

    In addition to acknowledging the above,Semperit recommends that all passengerand light truck tyres in highway motor ve-hicle application be removed rom service

    at the ollowing tread depths: summer/high performance tyres = 3 mm

    winter tyres = 4 mm

    These recommendations are based uponSemperits testing as well as real worldexperience which shows that drivers canmaintain the per ormance potential (e.g.wet grip) o their tyres by replacing thembe ore they reach the regulatory mini-mum tread depth of 1.6 mm.

    This applies especially to winter tyres orwhich winter driving properties such assnow traction are signifcantly reduced attread depths below 4 mm.

    Guidelines on tyre safety for drivers andvehicle operators(recommended or vehicle handbooks).Tyres need to be properly handled if they

    are to keep you and other road userssafe. So please note the following:

    1. The tyre pressure must be as indicatedin the operating instructions or yourvehicle or as marked on the vehicleitsel . The pressure applies to coldtyres; it must not be any lower. Tyresthat have become warm, e.g. throughdriving, will increase in pressure. Neverrelease air rom warm tyres, or thepressure could all below theminimum.The pressure must be checked every14 days when the tyres are cold.Dont orget to check the spare.

    I the pressure is too low, heatmay build up in the tyre and lead tointernal damage. At high speeds thetread may even come off and the tyre

    may have a blowout . Tyre damage thatcannot be seen is not put right simplyby raising the pressure a terwards!

    2. Drive over kerbstones slowly and, ipossible, at right angles. Dont drive upor against any steep or sharp-edgedkerbstones or other objects (e.g.stones); this can lead to non-visibletyre damage which can cause

    problems later the tyre may fail whenrunning at high speeds .

    3. Check tyres regularly or damage , suchas stones, nails etc. that havepenetrated the tyre, as well as any cuts,tears or bulges (in the sidewall).Foreign objects can also damage theinside o the tyre. Let your tyre dealeror specialist check to see i the tyre can

    be repaired. I a repair is not possibleor doubt ul, replace the tyre. Damagedtyres can burst .

    4. Never ft used tyres whose li e storyyou dont know. And remember thattyres age even when they are littleused or not used at all. I your sparetyre remains unused or years, youshould only use it in emergencies anddrive care ully.

    5. Check the tread depth o your tyresregularly. The lower the depth, thegreater the risk of aquaplaning .Ensure that your tyres comply withthe legally required tread depth.
