Installing DLL

The setup program starts automatically and guides you through the installation process.

• Insert the DLL CD into the CD drive of your computer. The Welcome window is displayed. ClickNext to continue.

1. Click Yes to agree the Software License Agreement. In the Choose Destination Locationwindow, you need to select the directory where DLL files are installed. If you accept thedefault options, click Next to continue. If you want to install DLL in another directory, clickBrowse and select desired directory from the tree.

2. To install Teacher DLL program, select Teacher and click Next.To install Student DLL program, select Student and click Next.

3. Name the Start up Menu folder in which you would like Setup to create the program’sshortcuts, then click Next. (Recommended to use the default name: DLL)

4. Select a unique Channel ID for the current language laboratory / teaching classroom. Note:select the same Channel ID for the installation at Teacher and Students.

5. If, during the driver installation, you receive a prompt that the software you are installing hasnot passed Windows Logo testing we advise you to click the "Continue Anyway" button.

If the driver installation will not proceed even though you have selected "Continue Anyway",you can modify the Windows drivers installation options.

a. Click on Start, and select Control Panel. Double click on System, then click on theHardware tab

b. Click on the Driver Signing, and then uncheck the Block and choose Ignore or Warninstead.

c. Click OK.d. Restart the DLL installation.

6. Select the desired file types you wish to associate with DLL.7. The installation is performed. In the Installation Completed window, click Finish to exit the

installation.8. You need to restart your system to complete the installation. Click OK in the next window to

restart or Cancel to return to Windows without restarting. It is recommended to restart thesystem immediately after installation.9.

Uninstalling DLL

You can uninstall DLL like any other program in Windows.

1. Close the DLL program.2. In the Start menu, select Settings and Control Panel.3. Open the Add/Remove Programs window and select DLL.4. Click Remove.5. Follow the on-screen process.

6. Restart to complete the DLL removal.

Introducing DLL

Digital Language Laboratory (DLL) is the first 4-in-1 (Audio + Video + Text + Exam) multimedialanguage laboratory software system designed to replace the traditional sound recording system inthe language lab. DLL simulates traditional cassette player in operation while offering additionalfunctions for modern languages instruction and self-directed language learning.

As a combination of pronunciation practice, video presentation, audio discussion* and exercises, DLLcreates a genuinely interactive teaching and learning environment. There is no need for hardwaredevices, as DLL provides all functions that existing hardware systems have, plus a set of uniqueadvanced features.

1. Overview

1.1 Components of the DLL main windows

1.1.1 Teaching Modes / Self Learning Mode

Teacher has full control over student's DLL in "Teaching Mode"- Student cannot exit DLL when Teacher DLL is opened- During Teaching Mode, teacher can remotely control all function buttons of Student DLL- In “Teaching Mode”, student can switch to Self Learning mode only with teacher’s

permission

Students can use DLL Self Learning mode for self-study after lesson in “Self Learning Mode”

DLL is divided into two modes: teaching mode and learning mode:

Teaching Mode- Real time language instruction- Creation of multimedia coursework during or before the lesson - Teaching with prepared coursework or other sources of teaching materials

Self Learning Mode- Self-directed language learning during or after lessons - To edit multimedia coursework - Audio Recording / Video Capturing 

Capture button for real-time capturing audio and/or video from digital sources

Open button for opening prepared media file. Audio file: wav, mp3, wma; Video file: dlp,mpg, mpeg, dat, avi, wmv

Save button for saving files.

Audio file: wav, mp3, wma; Video file: avi, wmv; DLL Language Project: dlp

* DLL saves the video, audio, bookmark index, captions and exam in one file under a projectname (*.dlp) for repeated use. So, users do not need to open individual files for usage.

1.1.1 Bookmarks

DLL contains bookmarks that you can use to mark places in the media file that you want to return to.

1.1.2 Bookmark EditorYou can create or clear the bookmarks on the master track. All bookmarks on the master track canbe auto-adjusted to display.

1.1.3 Waveform Zoom

Master Track waveform can be zoomed in or out.

1.1.4 Speed Control

During playback, you can use Speed Control to playback media file in fast/slow speed. Each time youpress the “+” button, the playback speed increases. To playback in slow speed, press the “–“ button.“0” is the normal playback speed.

1.1.5 Function Buttons

The DLL function buttons are similar to buttons on a tape recorder. In addition to the familiar Play,Stop, Pause, and Record buttons, DLL also contains Recap and Loop buttons. Recap is useful whenyou are looking for a specific sentence: it searches the master track for pauses and jumps back onesentence at a time. Loop creates a loop that runs the same selected segment over and over again forplayback or recording functions.

Moreover, Simultaneous or Sequential Playback and Recording provide interactive settings on

language practice.

1.1.6 Track Display

The master track is used for real-time recording of a media source, such as external languagematerial from the AV equipments. Also, it displays the prepared courseware material for languagepractice. The Student track is designed for recording the student’s input. The progress of the tracksis indicated by the sliders below. It contains a vertical slider for adjusting the volume at the right of thetrack display.

1.1.7 Operation Status Display

The operation status display shows the name of the open file, bookmark information, the recordingstatus, guided information on current running function for students, and a timer for the file.

1.1.8 Window Display Control

The Text Chat and Exam windows’ display can be ‘called out’ or ‘hide from view’ with the greyswitches.

1.1.9 Controlling the size of the waveform

You can use the Zoom in and Zoom out buttons to control the size of the waveform on the mastertrack.

1.1.10 Caption Editor

With this function, you can create captions or text messages that synchronize with audio and/or videocourse context

1.1.12 Exam

Create multiple-choice questions with image and video for evaluating students’ progress.

Student Quiz Display and Answer Panel

Start Quiz Once the Start Quiz button is pressed, a set of functions will be followed. First, the mastertrack starts to playback and display the associated question on the Student Quiz Display andAnswer Panel according to the corresponding time. Depends on the setting, students wouldeither have a chance to answer the questions at the end of the bookmarks or answer after

playing the file.

Video broadcast in full screen and window modes

1.1.14 Intercom

Intercom function allows teacher to provide interactive learning instruction with a particular student.Teacher can listen to each student’s pronunciation and give instructions with intercom. Withbroadcasting option enabled, teacher voice can be broadcasted to selected/all student(s).

1.1.15 Requesting help

You can get help at any time by selecting Help in the DLL main menu.

1.1.16 System Settings

You can change DLL properties by selecting System Settings icon in the DLL main menu.

1.1.17 Exiting DLL

You can exit DLL by selecting Exit in the upper right corner of the DLL main panel. Teacher can also

close the student DLL remotely.

2. Using DLL features

2.1 Teaching Mode

2.1.1 Function

(1). This mode is designed for real-time preparation as well as broadcasting teaching materials inlanguage instruction. 

(2). Teacher can create teaching materials (audio, video, bookmarks and questions) during thelesson and broadcast to the class for real-time teaching.

(3). Teacher can prepare teaching materials in advance.(4). Teacher can open a prepared material for teaching purposes. (Discuss in the next page)

2.1.2 Real-Time Capture during Teaching Mode

With capturing function in Teacher DLL, you can real-time capture audio and/or video learningmaterials from other digital sources and convert it to a format that can be used in DLL.

(1). Prepare digital source (audio CD, web cam, DVD disc, video/audio cassette, etc) and start

playing it or just use teacher’s microphone for audio capturing.(2). In Teacher DLL main menu, click Capture to start the Real Time Capturing mode.(3). Click Record in DLL to start capturing and broadcasting to class.(4). Click Stop in both applications to stop capturing. If you want to continue recording after

pressing <Stop>, click Record again to continue recording.

You can name and save the capturing file in .wav or .mp3 or .wma format (audio), .avi or .wmvformat (video) and .dlp (DLL project). Open the file in Courseware Teaching or Self Learning mode for continuous learning.

2.1.3 Playing back and recording the student track

(5). Click Play to playback the file.

(6). Click “Sequential Play and Record” or “Simultaneous Play and Record” to start recordstudent own speech on the student track while the master track is playing.

(7). Click Stop when you want to stop playback or recording.(8). Click “Sequential Playback” or “Simultaneous Playback” to play back both the master and

student audio and video tracks for comparison.

2.1.4 Using the Recap function

(9). The Recap function is designed to let you move quickly to the previous sentence or part ofthe file. DLL recognizes a silent gap between sentences and by clicking Recap takes youback to the last gap. This is useful when you want to practise the same phrase over andover again.

2.1.5 Using the Loop function

(10). Sometimes you may want to drill a particularly important phrase or segment repeatedly.You can use the mouse to select a file segment on the master track. Then click Loop to playor record the segment continuously. Click Loop again when you want to stop the sectionrepeating.

2.1.6 Open a file in Teaching Mode

(1). Allow teacher to deliver a lesson with prepared coursework (Project File *.dlp) to students forrepeated training

(2). To teach with other sources of learning materials, e.g. wave file, VCD DAT, Mpeg1, MP3,AVI, WMV, etc.

(3). Optional functions for content editing:

• To bookmark Master Track

• To add caption for audio and/or video file

• To create exam and edit bookmarks

2.1.7 Playing back a file and Recording the student track

(1). Under Teaching Mode, make sure that a file is open in DLL by clicking the Open button. Thename of the open file is displayed in the file name field of the status display.

(2). You can play back audio and video files and record into the student track. While the mastertrack is playing, student can record their speech on the student track for reading practice.

Click Sequential Playback and Recording or Simultaneous Playback and Recordingto play the Master Track and allow student to record in the Student Track.

Sequential Playback and Recording: Master track and Student track will be play backedand recorded one after another.

Simultaneous Playback and Recording: Master track and Student track will be playbacked at the same time.

• Student can practice (record) voice in Courseware Teaching mode but theycannot save the file.

2.2 Self Learning Mode

2.1.1 Function

(1). Teacher can allow students to practice after teaching (In "Teaching Mode", students cannot

switch to Self Learning mode without teacher’s permission)

(2). Self-directed language learning for students when teacher is not in class (Standalone Mode)

(3). To edit content: add bookmarks, caption and exam

(4). Capturing function for audio recording (wave, mp3, wma) and video capturing with capturecard or web cam installed (optional).

2.1.2 Self Learning in [Teaching Mode]

(1) Teacher selects Self Learning to allow self study for students

(2) The master track on Student DLL will still exist for students to continuously practice.

(3) Student can also click Open and select project or files

(4) Student click Play, Sequential Play and Record and Simultaneous Play and Record toplay Master Track and play or record their own Student Track

(5) Setting bookmarks, create caption and generate exam (optional)

(6) Click Save to save the files in student directory for repeated use

(7) Student DLL cannot exit if Teacher is on-line.

2.1.3 Self Learning [Standalone mode]

(1) Student can start DLL in standalone mode. It will go into the Self Learning modeautomatically.

(2) Click Open and select project or files for language practice.

(3) Student click Play, Sequential Play and Record and Simultaneous Play and Record toplay Master Track and play or record their own Student Track

(4) Setting bookmarks, create caption and generate exam (optional)

(5) Click Save to save the files in student directory for repeated use.

(6) Student can exit DLL.

3. Optional functions

3.1 Using bookmarks

DLL contains bookmark function that you can use to mark selected places in the master track.When you click bookmark button, the file starts playing from the selected place onward.

3.1.1 Adding bookmark

While playing the master track, click Add Bookmark when you hear the place that you want tomark or click anywhere on the master track that you want to mark before clicking Add Bookmark.

3.1.2 Deleting bookmark

Highlight the selected bookmark on the master track that you want to remove. Click DeleteBookmark.

3.1.3 Edit bookmark

Highlight the selected bookmark and drag it to the other places on the master track. Changebookmark position by simple drag and drop.

3.1.4 Auto-Next

To playback and broadcast file without stopping at the bookmarks

3.2 Auto-collect student tracks' recording

Taking oral tests is easy with DLL. Enable “Auto-collect student tracks' recording / Oral tests”

option under the System Settings or click the Auto-Collect button on the Teacher DLL.

When teacher has captured / opened a file for test and click the appropriate button for startingstudents’ recording, the students’ audio recording (WAV / MP3) can be auto-collected andtransferred to the teacher.

3.3 Exam

You can use Exam Editor Button to start creating multiple-choice questions. It is designed forsimple Q & A in class under Teaching Mode, and for students’ progress evaluation.

(1) Click Exam Editor- Input multiple-choice question and answers in the Question Plate- Input time for question display- Select answer option and input score

(2) Click Start Exam to start exam and send question to students

(3) Student can answer corresponding questions by selecting the appropriate answerbuttons. 

(4) System will analyse student exam results and display in comprehensive text andgraphical results. Result can export to a report file.

3.4 Caption

DLL contains a caption feature for transcript of audio, text synchronization for video materials orannotate the content of the master media file.

(1). Open the media file that you want to work with.

(2). In the DLL main window, click Caption to input time and caption or subtitle in CaptionEditor Window.

(3). Click Update to confirm.

(4). Click OK to complete.

Caption is created according to time track instead of bookmark. It is possible to add unlimiteditems on the track within the time period

4. Distribution of Learning Materials

Teacher has 3 methods to distribute learning materials to students for self-study in Self LearningMode:

4.1 File Transfer (recommended)Teacher controlled the learning material distribution to students by switching from Teaching to SelfLearning mode in Teacher DLL.

4.2 File Transfer (with XCLASS installed)

Send and Open Audio & Video files 

Formats supported: *.mpg, *.mpeg, *.dat, *.avi, *.wmv, *.mp3, *wma and *.wav files (You can choosefile association during the installation of DLL)

a. Click <File Transfer> from the XCLASS control panel and prompt to the<File Transfer Manager>

b. Select the file to be sent from the appropriatelocation. You can either enter its location in thespace under the Teacher’s Directory or click <Up

one level> to search it from the folder.

c. Select students to receive your file.

d. Enter the location of the file received by students inthe space under the Students’ Directory or doubleclick the mouse in the space and enter a newfolder for the transmitted file saving in student

computers, e.g. d:\temp

e. Click [Send & Open] to send and open the filein Student DLL.

f. Click [End] or to exit.

Notes. In this version of DLL, you can only use File Transfer [Send & Open] function to open 1 file inStudent DLL each time.

If you want to open a new file in Student DLL, you can use Application Monitor

of XCLASS to close Student DLL first, then use File Transfer [Send & Open] to open another fileagain.

If you want to send multiple files to student computer, please use File Transfer [Send] function andlet student to open the files from their directory, e.g. d:\temp

(2). Select the DLL Project folder to be sent from the appropriate location.

(3). Select students to receive your file.

(5). Click [Send] to send the file to student computer

(6). Select the *.dlp file to be sent from the appropriate location.

(7). Select students to receive your file.

(8). Select the same location of the file received by students

(9). Click [Send & Open] to send and open the file in Student DLL.

(10). Click [End] or to exit.

Sending multiple files 

(1). Click <File Transfer>

(2). Select the files to be sent from the appropriate location.

(3). Select students to receive your file.

(4). Enter the location of the file received by students

(5). Click [Send] to send the file to student computer.

(6). Click [End] or to exit.

(7). Student can now open file from their directory

4.3 Shared folder

Teacher and students can map a shared drive on File Server for common access to learningmaterials.As DLL automatically saves all related files in one file under a project name for repeated use, usersonly need to open the *.dlp file for usage.

5. Intercom

(1) Click Intercom 

Click 1 student icon from the dialog box (e.g. Student02) to start interactive talking, listen andmonitor selected student’s pronunciation or recording content. Teacher can switch to differentstudents for intercom or voice monitor by clicking different student icons.

* The recorded waveform of selected student will be captured to the Student Track of TeacherDLL

(2) Click ALL to broadcast teacher voice to all students via teacher PC’s selected recordsource

(3) Click Intercom again to stop intercom or broadcast.

Intercom function allows teacher to monitor the pronunciation of a particularstudent with Intercom function enabled. So teacher can correct the pronunciationof that student or give verbal help when necessary. Use the Broadcast function,teacher voice can be broadcasted to all students.

6. System Settings

To change DLL system settings, select System Settings in the DLL main window. The SystemSettings window opens after password prompt. The default password is NIL (no password). Thewindow contains six tabs: Device, Advanced, Skin, Color Scheme, File and License. Click the tab

that contains the options you want to change.

6.1 Device tab

On the Device tab, you can change video and audio capture device and format settings.

6.2 Advanced tab

On the Advanced tab, you can configure the silent gap detection settings, select capturing option inTeaching mode and change exam method.

6.3 Skin tab

On the Skin tab, you can change to use different DLL skin interface.

6.4 Color Scheme tab

On the Color Scheme tab, you can change font format and color display for windows and waveformsin DLL.

6.5 File tab

On the File tab, you can control settings that affect the files opened and saved in DLL.

6.6 License tab

On the License tab, you can change the system setting password and input the DLL license key.

7. Exit DLL

(1) You can click to exit Teacher DLL

(2) You can also close students’ DLL remotely by selecting [Yes] in the message box as below:

8. Troubleshooting

If you experience any difficulties while using DLL, check the Question and Answer list below forhelpful information.

Question:Starting DLL gives the error message “Cannot find audio card!”Answer:

(1). Make sure at least a sound card is available and appropriate driver is installed correctly.(2). The DirectX components have been installed correctly.

Question:Clicking Record button does not record anything Answer:

(1). Make sure your sound card is AC’97 or Creative PCI Sound compatible or Sun-Tech AudioBox ST-AB 203.

(2). The DirectX 9.0 or above has been installed.(3). Complete and verify the DLL system setting.

(4). Make sure that appropriate recording source channel for the sound card is selected on bothTeacher and Student side when Record button is clicked.(5). Confirm the correct and updated sound card driver is installed.(6). Make sure that your microphone is connected correctly.

Question:No waveform is generated after opening a file or recording Answer:

(1). Make sure the default directory for temporary files, C:\Temp has sufficient free disk spaceand allowed the logged-in account to write file in it. You may change the default directory inthe System Setting window or dll.ini.

Question:

Capture function fail to capture external AV signal Answer:

(1). Make sure the capturing device is installed and updated driver has been used.(2). The capturing device includes a WDM driver.(3). The DirectX 9.0 or above has been installed.(4). The external AV source input and cabling has been well connected.(5). Checking the DLL system setting

Question:Cannot open a media file Answer:DLL supports the following file formats:

Audio file: wav, mp3, wma;

Video file: mpg, mpeg, dat, avi, wmv;Project file: dlp

Question:Cannot transfer file to students after switching from Teacher to Self-Learning mode Answer:Change “TransPackSize” value in dll.ini to “8”
