Dear Oakland Community,
Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of the Occupy Oakland protests at Frank Ogawa Plaza. In addition,
there will be a training exercise called Urban Shield for local, national and international first responders (fire andpolice) at the Oakland Marriott, funded by the Urban Areas Security Initiative and hosted by the AlamedaCounty Sheriffs Office. The exercise is designed to assist first responders to prepare for and provide a unified
response to disasters and major emergencies.
The City is aware of several demonstrations and activities planned in and around Frank Ogawa Plaza and
the Oakland Marriott tomorrow.
Keeping peace on our streets and protecting the safety of Oakland residents and businesses is our top priority.Although we dont anticipate problems to occur, in the event that the demonstrations become unlawful, theOakland Police Department is prepared to swiftly address any criminal behavior that would damage property or
jeopardize the safety of the public or police officers. Individuals engaging in such behavior are subject to
arrest and prosecution.
We provide this information to raise awareness about these events, not to alarm, so that you may plan ahead.Feel free to share this information with your employees, neighbors and tenants. The following is generalinformation about known activities and times:
9 am - 5 pm: Pickets at Oakland Marriott Hotel 6 pm: March to Frank Ogawa Plaza and other activities
Traffic in downtown Oakland may be intermittently displaced as marches and rallies occur. OPD will facilitate
traffic to ensure pedestrian and vehicular safety. If traffic and/or transit impacts occur, employers, employees,and residents are advised to visitwww.511.orgor call 511 for up-to-date transition information.
Oakland is Open for Business
City offices and services will remain open on Friday, October 25. If necessary, staff from the Public WorksAgency and other vital City services will work extended hours that day to provide additional community support.

Simple Tips for Everyday Safety
Stay tuned to local TV and radio stations for information. If possible, park your car in a secure, off-street location. Remove or secure trash receptacles. Be sure your business is well lit. Good lighting increases visibilityand also increases the effectiveness
of any closed circuit TV system.
If you have a closed circuit TV system, be sure it is in good working order and is turned on. Saverecordings of documented criminal activity.
Make sure your building has good quality locks on the doors and windows. Deadbolt locks are a mustfor exterior doors.
All exterior doors with a gap should be covered with a steel plate to prevent the door from being priedopen.
