DJ Harrison is Richmond, VA-based producer and multi-

instrumentalist Devonne Harris. The son of a radio DJ who

introduced him to the world of record collecting, Harris grew up

with music, progressing from violin, to high school drum-line, to the

Jazz Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Despite

his concentration on drumming, he also continued working with

other instruments and developed an interest in sampling. Without a

computer or sampler, he learned to replay samples on the drums,

piano, bass or guitar.

DJ Harrison finds himself inspired by local musicians in the

Richmond scene that’s as diverse and nonexclusive as they come.

Amongst the likes of rappers, producers, punks and bluegrass

bands, he falls within reach of an expansive pool of musicians to

befriend and collaborate with. He lives and works in Jellowstone, a

house turned recording compound occupied by his bandmates in

Butcher Brown, a “garage punk jazz funk” group. HazyMoods —DJ

Harrison’s Stones Throw debut — was recorded there, where the

living room functions as a communal recording studio.

Fans of the exquisite, often never-before-released funk championed

by Now Again Records are no stranger to Amnesty. Based in

Indianapolis in the early 1970s, the group released only two obscure

45s in their recording career. Birthed from the same scene as the

Ebony Rhythm Band, Amnesty had a political edge similar to LA

Carnival and the hardest brass section since The Kashmere Stage

Band.

In 1973 Amnesty recorded five hard, vocal funk numbers alongside

some ballads and a handful of demos based around nothing more

than guitar accompaniment. Only two songs were ever released;

Amnesty’s biting, difficult-to-categorize prog/rock/soul/funk stretched

far beyond Indianpolis’s bounds and the band didn’t have a label

to take them to the next level. Finally made available thirty three

years after they were recorded, these songs are funk arranged with

dangerous complexity and performed with precision – arguably the

most unique funk to originate from Naptown, and some of the best

music of its kind.

Nameless picked up where the Godfather of Afro beat, Fela

Anikulapo Kuti left off, just after meeting Sandra Izsadore. They were

an 8-piece band, comprised ENTIRELY of women, with a powerful

Austin-based musician Eliot Lipp delivers “Skywave”; an album Lipp has been working on for the past several months. With influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. In these nine songs Lipp feels he “might have everything I want to say in one moment.” Recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing Skywave and giving himself permission to take some risks as well. With a versatile approach, Lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across America and abroad always returning to his hometown in the Pacific Northwest. Collaboration plays a role in all his albums. He’s been a fan of Emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his “Not Quite Awake” remix. He asked DMC champ Chris Karns to scratch on ‘Joyride’. In addition to doing cuts, Chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples.‘Reflection’ came from a jam session with Gibbz and Cherub in their Nashville studio. One of Lipp’s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from Seattle that call themselves Fish Tank Friends. Most of them had a hand in the early stages of ‘Spiders’. producers Es-K and Loupo have crafted a smooth, introspective

Monika Johnson, better known as Doreen Shaffer, is arguably

the most active original Jamaican singer of the last 50 years. A

founding member of The Skatalites since 1963, she has toured the

world countless times, taking the legacy of Ska, Rocksteady and

Reggae music to the most remote parts of the planet, from the most

underground venues to the most important festivals.

Her work at the head of The Skatalites is probably the one that will

consecrate her and for which she will be remembered for centuries,

however, her brief solo work, like this single which we are presenting

today, endorses her as one of the best Jamaican singers of all time.

The independence of Jamaica in 1962 brought a musical creativity

of which not only the island still profits today. The Steadytones, from

southern Germany, recreate that golden age, making it tangible,

Great interpreters of the variety of styles that emerged in the 1960s,

especially in Jamaica, but also in other corners of the world, The

Steadytones take their “explosive reggay” sound far beyond the

In 1964 Roy Ellis, a Jamaican teenager, released two of his first

compositions backed by the best talents from Jamaican music:

Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Georgie Fame on organ, Tony Washington

on piano, Eddie ‘Tan Tan’ Thornton playing trumpet, Rico on

trombone, Sonny Burke on sax, among some others who Roy Ellis

can’t properly remember now, after half a century.

Roy Ellis recalls: “I met a guy called Sonny Burke, he was a singer,

saxophone player and producer. He was always looking for young

talent at that time, so I went to him to introduce myself. I remember

this time very clearly... Well I tried to write some songs. I came with

three titles that I wrote: ‘I Don’t Want You Anymore’ (aka ‘Another

Man’), ‘Everyday You Got Me Crying Girl’, ‘Mr. Wang’. He liked all

three of them, but he only recorded two. In the studio, at that time,

playing rhythm Guitar on the record, was the master Ernest Ranglin,

on the organ was Georgie Fame, on the piano was Tony Washington,

on Trumpet was Eddy Tantan, who much later became a member of

Georgie Fame & the Blue Fame Band. So we recorded the songs

‘Another Man’ and ‘Mr. Wang’.

Then Roy Ellis met his colleagues with whom formed The Bees,

Pyramids, Symarip, etc. and sold millions of records, and the rest is

history… until nowadays, when Roy Ellis is one of the most prolific

and recognized Jamaican talents, having released over 50 records

and played live all over the world.

Produced by Boris Gardiner, originally was released on Bronco label

as a strictly limited single, released as a ‘blank’ record. Producers

and sound system owners used to release this kind of 7” with a

blank label so that the other sound systems couldn’t know the artist

performing and get a copy for their dances. There was a big rivality

among the sound systems for getting the records with the most

enthusiastic response from the audience at the dance floors, that’s

the reason why they wanted to hide the credits.

Roy Panton recalls: “We recorded these two songs at the Federal

Studio in 1969, at that time the studio had just expanded in size and

tracks, I don’t remember exactly how many tracks, but I’m sure it was

more than 2. That was my first time recording on more than 2 tracks.

I also remember Leslie Butler played Organ and Patrick McDonald

on Guitar, Boris Gardiner on Bass. After we finished the recording

Boris went back to the studio and dubbed in the chimes with the

Hammond Organ. It was first released on a blank label by Boris.

That’s what I remember.”

‘Endless Memory’ was reissued in his successful compilation entitled

‘Roy Panton & Yvonne Harrison and Friends - Studio Recordings

1961-1970’ (Liquidator Music 2012). On the flip side there is ‘Tell Me’,

a great rocksteady track which has not been repressed never again

in any format.

L-One is a young Munich hip-hop beat smith and a lover of drum

computers. At only 24-years-old, he already has a considerable

discography as a producer including projects such as ATP’s “C’est

La Vie Or What?” (2016 on Bumm Clack) as well as Weltuntergäng’s

“Dogmatikers Elfen” (2014 on Tieftonkultur). As a part of Akere and

Manufaktur, he also ventured into new genres in the recent years

and provided new approaches to TripHop and Dubstep.

On the Farska LP, L-One processes his impressions of his vacation

in Croatia in 2015 and 2016. Every song was created on the beach

with only an MPC60, which carries its title either of the meal (2015)

or the drink (2016) of the previous evening.

Far away from civilization and the daily grind: a calm bay on the

southside of a small Croatian island. No one around, just a few

cabins. The sound of the sea blending in with the chirping of the

crickets, melted candle wax between spilled olive oil and empty

matchboxes. A magical place, where you automatically start to think

differently – where you find peace – and focus on the essentials:

nature, food and creativity. Fresh ingredients, a few samples, a field

recorder, lots of atmosphere and a drum computer. This way, new

impressions are immediately processed and organic instrumentals

come into being almost by themselves while the swimsuits are

drying in the evening sun. The Farska LP is a collection of these

sensations – a very special postcard. Calm audio waves inspired by

the vibe of the past two summer vacations. An album close to nature

that wakens wanderlust.
