    1. Text Summery and Analysis

DIY Urbanism, or the domain of possibility, collabora-

tion and creativity, is the on-going effort of do-it-yourself urbanists

to re-engage the public with the city. The article presents provides

a brief summary of Bay Area projects presented in an exhibit in2010. The exhibit produced by SPUR, the San Francisco Planning

and Urban Renewal Association, illustrates a variety of projects

and methods urbanists have recently undertaken to bring new life

to the city. Grouped into categories of DIY markets, streets, gar-

dens, and public art, the projects reveal a pattern of temporary

    intervention leading to urban transformations.

take on the sidewalk as a public forum and the car as an urban in-

hibitor. These projects seek to reclaim underused spaces, such as

sidewalks, medians, and parking spaces, and transform them into

places of social interaction. Outdoor Living Rooms, Pavement to

Parks, and Park(ing) Day began as renegade interventions in the

urban environment. Each used furniture as a vehicle for claiming
