Welcome to our 2016 private treaty bull sale. The volatility of the markets over the last couple of yearsshould sharpen our focus on profitability factors that we can control like pounds at weaning, cow cost, andmaternal efficiency. These are factors that we have been focusing on in our breeding program for the last17 years. Whether you are looking for a high growth terminal bull or a moderate cowmaker, you can findbulls in this offering geared toward future profits.

If you have followed our program over the last 10+ years, you can see the progress that we have workedhard to achieve. This set of yearlings is really powerful. We are featuring our largest offering to date of olderbulls that were developed to cover a lot of cows for a lot of years. Don't expect to see big fat 2 year olds.They ran on grass all summer and without supplement. We didn’t pull them in to the lot to start feedingthem until early December.

We are pleased to again have guest consignments from Klein Ranch (Heath Klein family) featuring anoutstanding set of red yearlings. Again this year, Mike Domsch has brought some outstanding bulls as a cooperator. These high growth and carcass homozygous black bulls will really impress. New this year, TimRippe joins us as a cooperator. These unique black 3 breed hybrid yearlings are the result of breeding someof his really good Balancer cows to Simmental bulls.We are really pleased with the results and think thatyou will be too. All yearlings have been in the same management group since early October. Each herd hasdifferent management before weaning, so take that into account when looking at actual weights. Rememberthat EPDs are the best way to compare across herds.

As always the bulls are unclipped. What you see is what you get. This year we will again have ultrasounddata available for the yearling bulls which will be available in supplement form a week or so ahead of thesale. The base prices will be assigned at that time. Check our website a few days before the sale for all ofthe updated data. We will guarantee all bulls to be free of the Angus defect genes. If you buy a bull andare concerned about these defects, we'll be happy to run the test for you at cost. Most of the bulls arefree by pedigree.

Our private treaty sale will begin on February 20th. We encourage you to come and take a look at thebulls. If you can't be with us on the 20th, give us a call, and come take a look at the bulls ahead of time. Asalways, we will provide free board until April 1st and fully guarantee all of the bulls. SALE DAY SCHEDULE:11 a.m. Cattle available for viewing and silent auction opens12 p.m. Lunch will be ready. 1:30 p.m. Closeout begins.

SALE FORMAT: This year our private treaty sale begins onFebruary 20th. There will be bid sheets posted for each loton that day. We will proceed with a simple silent auctionformat. The minimum bid for each lot will be available inthe sale supplement a few days before the sale, and theminimum bid increment will be $250. At 1:30, we will beginclosing bids with a live bid off. The bulls that are left afterthat time will be available first come, first serve at the baseprice unless otherwise noted.

CLOSEOUT ORDER: This year, we will not set the closeoutorder until just before we close. We will close in the order ofthe high current bids on the silent auction. If the closing orderis important to you, place a bid on your first choice duringthe silent auction to help set the closeout order.

SALE TERMS: Full payment is due the day of sale. Makechecks payable to Dixson Farms, Inc.

BULL CARE: All bulls will have free board until April 1st. Wecan keep the yearling bulls from April 1st to May 15th for$1.50 per day and the 2 year olds for $2.00. After May 15th,board will increase to $3 and $4 respectively.

SEMEN INTEREST: Each owner is retaining 1/4 semen in-terest in all bulls selling unless otherwise noted. The buyergets full possession and salvage value of the bulls. This justreserves the right to collect semen at our expense and thebuyer’s convenience and is a revenue sharing interest in theevent that a bull has semen marketed in the future.

DELIVERY: Economical delivery can be arranged by talkingto Lyle.

GUARANTEE: All our bulls are 100% guaranteed for thefirst year. This means if there are any disposition, soundness,calving, or color problems, we will take the bull back and replace him or assist you in finding a replacement. TheLAST thing we want to do is sell and perpetuate problemcattle. This is NOT mortality insurance. Once they leaveour place, they are your bulls. All sight unseen purchasesare guaranteed to be as represented.

SEMEN CHECK: All bulls sell guaranteed to pass aBreeding Soundness Evaluation, but it has not been performed yet. Bulls will be tested in mid to late March toget past the coldest weather and closer to breeding season for most people. If you buy a bull and need tohave him checked sooner than that for an earlier pick up,notify us at check out and let Lyle know.

SUPPLEMENT SHEET: A supplement sheet will be availablewith current weights, scrotals, ultrasound information, updated EPDs, and base price about a week before the sale.

Our Low Input 2 Year Old Program To those of you who are new to our program, these coming 2 year olds mightrequire an explanation. They were born in late May and June by design. Wehandle this set of cows completely separate from the early spring calving cowsas a true low input herd. They are required to graze grass through the winterwith an occasional stalk or hay field. They get liquid protein or lick tubs, buthave had only three bales in nearly nine years. Rather than push these bulls tomaximize their growth, we grow them slow during the winter, then kick themout on grass all summer. We didn’t pull them into the lot until early December.Sure, we could have made them weigh a ton, but that wouldn’t have changedtheir genetics. We are serious about developing our own brand of Simmentalsthat can be productive in a low input system. These bulls are the proof. All bullsare virgin unless otherwise noted.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most ac-curate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. Inusing EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents theunit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. Forexample, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit dif-ference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to+10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units theyare expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to wean-ing weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds moreweaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would beexpected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calfheifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-rankingchart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him rel-ative to other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic lev-els for many economically important traits, they only provide apiece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in.Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overallimpact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to thedramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over thelast several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entirecow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows)with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd sizeretained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and soldgrade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Anguscows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’rekeeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs,zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above,index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can beused to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another.Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull comparedto another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, youcan quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra$6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart isrequired to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relativeto other bulls in the breed.
