COVID 19 NEBRASKA EXTENSION RESPONSE Nebraska 4-H takes the health and safety of our community very seriously and we are

carefully monitoring the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation.

As United States and global health officials continue to address the spread of the

novel coronavirus and COVID-19 infection, health and emergency preparedness officials

at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln are monitoring the situation in collaboration with

our university and governmental partners. In doing our part to be responsible about

convening large groups of people, we are carefully reviewing calendars and determining

how we proceed with each scheduled event. This will be a fluid process as we continue

to monitor all available information in the days and weeks ahead.

The decision to cancel all events scheduled for March 16-29. While this was an

extremely difficult decision, we are putting the health and well-being of our

staff/families/youth at the forefront. From March 30 - May 9, Nebraska 4-H programming

will resume in a virtual format. This includes all scheduled educational programs,

competitive events, and 4-H club and council meetings hosted by Nebraska 4-H.

Additionally, there will be no tagging or weigh-in; families will be responsible for their

own tagging and DNA collection.

We are continuing to plan for summer events and will make determinations one month

in advance of the event and then continue to monitor the situation up to the event.

2020 SPECIAL GARDEN PROJECT

Classic Magic Bachelor Buttons The Special Gardening Project is an opportunity for 4-H members to grow unusual and fun projects in their gardens. Each year, a new plant is selected as the focus for all members enrolled in the project. Youth receive seeds which they plant and cultivate using project resources provided throughout the experience. Youth then have the opportunity to exhibit cut flowers or harvested vegetables or present their experience through a poster or report. The project is designed to challenge youth interested in horticulture by

introducing them to new and unique growing experiences and foster real-world problem-solving skills through a guided horticultural experience. Be sure to add this project to your 4HOnline enrollment. Missed it? Call or email Monica.

Currently web-based training is the only option.

Instructor-led trainings are halted.

We encourage you to do you trainings ONLINE.

Copies of certificates need to be provided to the extension office.

QUALITY ASSURANCE (YQCA) All 4-H members enrolled in livestock projects are required to complete annual quality assurance training and certification through the Youth for Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program. This includes youth enrolled in beef, dairy cattle, goat, sheep, swine, poultry, or rabbit projects. Youth may complete online training courses at https://4h.unl.edu/yqca Instructions found at https://4h.unl.edu/yqca-instructions

Did You Get Your Email From 4HOnline regarding YQCA? YQCA Web Based Certification – Flash Sale! In light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the YQCA Board is announcing a 25% flash sale on web-based certification in April! Here is how to take advantage of this opportunity. 1. Only offered during the month of April (April 1 – April 30), YQCA will be offering a 25% discount on web-based trainings, making them $9. o Those wishing to take part in the flash sale will need to purchase $9 web-based training coupons

from YQCA. Coupon order forms are attached to this message or may be obtained by emailing [email protected]. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO RECEIVE THE DISCOUNTED PRICE.

o Once the order form and proof of payment is received, coupons will be issued and returned to the purchaser within 3-5 business days.

o Coupons MUST be used towards a web-based training by April 30, 2020. 2. Youth who have already paid for a YQCA instructor-led training (on a date that has not yet passed), may log into their account and cancel their registration. o If payment was received via credit card, the payment will be refunded. o If payment was received via coupon code, that coupon code will be active again. This coupon code

does not expire and would be able to be used in future years. To cancel a registered training: 1. Go to https://yqca.learngrow.io and login to the account. 2. Select the course - you will have an option to "Cancel Registration.” This will cancel the training and refund the payment/re-activate the coupon code. We recognize those who have typically utilized the instructor-led training option may be unfamiliar with what users receive with their registration fee. We have identified those items below and ask that they be shared with instructors who are pointing their youth towards the web-based training. ➢ Each session purchased includes three modules – a knowledge builder, a skills lab, and a quiz.

o The knowledge builder is where content is delivered, the skills lab provides an opportunity to apply the content, and the quiz tests knowledge. To receive a certification, an 80% must be achieved on the 10-question quiz. o These modules, completed in their entirety, will provide 2-3 hours of an experience for users.

Fair Trophy/Awards Input Please

An email was sent out March 23, asking for input from our 4-H youth, on the awards for the upcoming county fair.

We have heard from some adults, but we want input from the youth as well.

Level 1 are the trophies. What styles do you like? If you have specific questions about them, just ask.

Level 2 would be the banners from last year or the buckles in previous years.

There was discussion about the buckles not being of good quality, but some liked them. Thoughts?

If you want to revisit the belt buckles, check these out https://shop4-h.org/collections/belt-buckles

Contact the office if you need the email resent. We value your thoughts!

Identifying Volunteer Opportunities for Youth: 4-H Civic

Engagement Ideas 4-H empowers young people to be true leaders. True Leaders are people who have confidence, will stick

to a job until it gets done, and can endure through challenges. Communities across Nebraska need true

leaders now more than ever.

4-H volunteers and youth across Nebraska may be looking for ideas about how they can become civically

engaged, all while abiding by the guidelines shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A web page with numerous ideas can be found at: https://4h.unl.edu/4-h-civic-engagement. Now is a great

time to collectively use our heads for clearer thinking, our hearts for greater loyalty, our hands for larger

service, and our health for better living.

2020 Online Horticulture Judging

Contest Do you know what it takes to pick the best fruit and vegetables out at the grocery store? Or do you know what judges are looking for when they judge your plants at the county fair? Have you ever wondered, what plant is that!?! We are excited to offer the opportunity to learn these and other important horticulture skills through the Online Horticulture Contest. The contest will be available June 5-22, 2020 at: https://go.unl.edu/hortcontest.

Horticulture judging contest consists of three parts. The first is identification of plant material. Participants identify the plants by common name from a plant list. Specimens may be alive or preserved plant parts like stems, twigs, leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits, roots, bulbs, tubers, or plant products.

The second is a knowledge portion, usually in the form of a true/false or multiple choice quiz. Questions will test the contestant's knowledge of cultural practices for horticultural crops, plant science, pesticides, horticultural careers and other topics related to the production, processing and consumption of horticultural crops.

The last portion is judging or placings. This is where four different plants, plates of vegetables, or containers flowers are ranked from best to worst based on a set of criteria. Classes are judged on the basis of condition, quality, uniformity, true-to-type, and size.

More information about the Nebraska State contest along with a list of study materials can be found in the Fairbook http://4h.unl.edu/fairbook/plant-science/horticulture-id. Here you can find the written study materials for the knowledge portion, follow links to plant pictures for help with identification, and read how judging of plant material is done. 9th Annual Innovative Youth Corn Challenge NEW features for 2020 With the disruption in programming as normal, our corn challenge team wants to make sure you know that the corn

challenge is still on and gearing up to be better than ever!

(NOTE: planning, etc. can be done virtually and we are here to help you make that happen)

New features to the program:

Once COVID-19 passes and things return to normal, our team is pleased to announce some NEW features to the Corn

Challenge. 1. Teams will communicate with other teams for peer-learning opportunities. (Ideally, these would be face-to-face, but

time will tell what is allowed at any given point.)

2. Corn challenge coordinators will make a site visit (when allowed) to obtain aerial imagery of your project.

3. Programming will include NEW unmanned aerial (drone) lessons and potential field day for participants.

If you’d like to participate, there is still time to sign-up!

9th Annual Innovative Youth Corn Challenge

Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are offering the ninth Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest.

This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school members), guides

participants through all aspects of corn production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn production.

As a team (2 or more participants), youth will be challenged to implement a production practice different than normal

to determine if they increased their yield. Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be considered. Yields,

cropping history, and production information will be collected in the Corn Yield Challenge management summary.

Cash prizes and plaques are given. First place receives $1,000, second place receives $500, and third place receives

$250. Sustainability, crop scouting and “extra mile” awards are also given as cash awards.

To participate in 2020, youth must register by April 15th to the Fillmore County Extension Office in Geneva, NE.

Details can be found at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth/cornchallenge. For more information, contact Brandy Van De Walle

Focal Length*: This is a number indicating the length of the lens which determines how much of a scene you are able to see through your viewfinder. This is typically measured in millimeters (mm). Example: 29mm, 35mm, 50mm. See Level 2 Activity 1 for more information. Type/Source of light: Be as specific as possible. Identify whether the lighting was natural or artificial. If artificial, identify the light sources, such as camera’s flash, neon lights, car headlights, flashlight, etc. For natural light, identify the type, dawn, dusk, midday, reflected, diffused, direct, light shining through a window, etc. Example: natural, midday direct sunlight See Level 2 Activities 3 and 5 for more information.

(The following questions are for Level 3 exhibitors only.) Shutter Speed*: This is the length of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into the camera sensor. Shutter speed is typically measured in fractions of a second when they are under a second. Slow shutter speeds allow more light into the camera sensor and are used in low-light situations, while faster shutter speeds help freeze motion. This might also be referred to as exposure time. Example: 1/30, 1/125, or 1/500 See Level 3 Activity 1 for more information. F Stop*: This is a number which indicates the size of the aperture, which allows light to travel into the camera. The aperture controls the depth of field. A larger aperture opening will result in a smaller depth of field. The aperture size is expressed in f numbers or f-stops. Examples: f/1.4, f/4, f/22 See Level 3 Activity 1 for more information. ISO*: This is a number that indicates a film’s sensitivity to light or more commonly its speed. It is typically measured in numbers, a lower number representing a darker image, while higher numbers mean a brighter image. Examples: 100, 200, 400 See Level 3 Activity 1 for more information. List advanced equipment and/or techniques used and/or what manual adjustment were made. Level 3 exhibitors should be exploring and experimenting with advanced techniques. This may include but does not necessarily require using a DSLR camera, manual adjustments, or other advanced equipment. Use this space to identify and, if needed, explain what advanced equipment or techniques were used to capture this image. If manual adjustments were made, identify which settings were adjusted (ISO, F Stop, Shutter Speed).

4-H Program Participant/Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct

The primary goal of the 4-H Program is to help youth develop competency in their projects, confidence in themselves and others, connections to their community and sound character.
