A Fresh Start For FallBy Rhonda Marvin, President
Cambridge Board of REALTORSRhonda Marvin
Sincerely,Rhonda Marvin 10005048
What you do to your garden in the fall can directly affect its success next season.Autumn is not merely a time to plant trees, grass and spring-blooming bulbs. It’s also the time to “regroup” and fortify lawns and gardens in preparation for cool winter temperatures and spring blossoms.
Clean upNow is the time to remove dying annuals and dead branches and leaves from trees and shrubs and toss them into the compost pile. Don’t add diseased or insect-infected foliage to compost, as it can spread. Be sure to leave live material undisturbed, as pruning may produce new buds that will die during a winter freeze.
ProtectIn areas that receive winter snow and ice storms, fall is a good time to wrap shrub branches with twine, to prevent them from breaking under the weight of a winter wonderland. Simply secure twine to the shrub trunk and wrap upward in a spiral. Do the same in a downward spiral from the top and tie to the tree trunk.Hedges can be protected by lightly clipping the sides to taper upward, so snow will not fall between branches.
Divide and conquerMany plants benefit from being divided every few years. Spring- and summer-blooming plants can be divided in the fall. Perennials with roots that spread or produce shoots from their base are the best candidates for division. Those that have dead growth in the center and young, healthy growth on the outside are ready to be divided and replanted as new and separate plants.
Love your lawnYes, summer is over, but mowing is not. Warm-season lawns Depending on a lawn’s condition, it will benefit from aeration (holes created to make soil less compact and encourage growth) once a year to once every few years. The job is made easier by renting (about $50 per day) a core aerator from a garden center.
After aerating, re-seed fescue and add lime if necessary -- a soil sample can be taken to your county extension service for testing -- followed by a slow-release fertilizer. Use a spade or shovel to apply top-dressing (a mixture of loam, horticultural sand and organic matter) evenly over a new lawn or stressed lawn. Top-dressing improves the consistency of the soil and can be purchased pre-mixed.
When half an inch of thatch (debris that forms at the base of grass stems) builds up, remove it with a rake. This process, known as de-thatching, allows water, air and fertilizer to reach grass roots easily. It’s best to de-thatch on an autumn day when the ground is moist. Don’t worry if the lawn looks worse afterwards, as the benefits will be visible in a few months.
After aerating and de-thatching, feed with a starter fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and iron. The rate and frequency of fertilizing depends on soil and grass types as well as manufacturer instructions. Autumn is also the time to sod or sow any patches of lawn that are bare or need repairing. And finally, rake fallen leaves off grass regularly (add them to the compost bin) so they won’t block sunlight or trap water.
Whenever possible it is best to anticipate and prevent problems in the garden. Fall’s mild conditions provide the perfect opportunity to have the lawnmower serviced and to clean garden tools (try a solution of one-part bleach to nine-parts water). Also lubricate, tighten and sharpen tool parts as needed.
Grub control should be applied to lawns in the fall to kill grub larvae before they mature. And finally, apply a pre-emergent to warm-season grass to prevent weeds from popping up in the spring.
It’s that time of year -- so sip cider, go on a hayride and get busy on your fall gardening “to-do” list.If you’re in the market for a new home...or thinking about selling your current home, contact a REALTOR. Their value and expertise will ensure a professional home buying/selling experience.

Prepping the fireplace for the season
10005044
People looking to embrace the cold-weather season often fi nd snuggling up in front of a roaring fi re is both relaxing and warming. Fireplaces are popular components of homes across the country. Ensuring fi replaces are prepared for a season of use is important from a safety standpoint and for personal comfort as well.
The U.S. Fire Administration states that heating fi res account for 36 percent of residential home fi res in rural areas every year. Often these fi res are due to creosote buildup in chimneys and stovepipes. All home heating systems require regular maintenance to function safely and effi ciently.
One of the most important steps to fi replace maintenance and preparation is having the entire thing cleaned by a pro-fessional. A chimney sweep provides a variety of services. According to Ace Chimney Sweeps of Maryland, a chimney sweep will clean out the entire chimney. Many use a high-powered vacuum so that there is no soot or dust entering the home. Depending on the range of services, some sweeps also offer a series of inspections of the chimney, interior fl ue and checks of attic spaces for any damaged areas that will need repair.
The next step will be securing your source of fuel. Many homeowners contract with a provider of seasoned fi rewood. A delivery of one or two cords of wood may take the average fi replace user through the season. Wood can also be purchased at supermarkets or picked up free in different areas. It’s not adviseable to use wood that has just been cut down. It likely contains high levels of moisture that will result in more smoke than burn power, and could lead to deposits forming on the inside of the chimney. Synthetic logs are also available, but use caution because they may burn unevenly and put out higher levels of carbon monoxide. Follow directions on the packages of these products carefully.
It is important to inspect a fi replace screen or guard to ensure it can safely protect against embers escaping the fi replace. In homes where there are young children, an added barrier may be needed in front of the fi replace to prevent little hands from touching the hot screen.
It is vital to open up the chimney fl ue before starting any fi re. This allows fresh air to feed the fi re and will enable smoke to exit the home. Failure to open the fl ue can result in smothering, dirty smoke fi lling the home quite quickly. The fl ue should be closed after the fi re is completely extinguished so that animals and outside debris don’t enter the home via the opening.
Be sure to have a metal container for removing and storing hot ashes handy. Embers and ashes can stay hot for quite some time, so they should be placed outdoors, ideally far from the home so they don’t set anything ablaze.
Educate household members about the rules of fi replace use. They should be aware that no items should be discarded into the fi re to avoid the emission of toxic fumes or dangerous embers. All it takes is one stray ember to start a huge fi re. Also, improper fuel materials may lead to the buildup of fl ammable creosote on the chimney.
A fi replace can be a focal point, a source of home heating and just a nice place to which to retire when the weather is cold. Preparing the fi replace for use and maintaining it properly are the keys to a safe season of use.

Cheap ways to freshen the house
Most people want their living spaces to smell clean and fresh. However, pets, aromas from the kitchen, cigarette smoke, and other things can make a home smell bad. Here are inexpensive ways to remedy all that.
* Find the source of the bad smell and eliminate it. This could be a garbage pail sitting in the sun or sink disposal that’s fi lled with food debris.
* Use a chunk of cedar or sandalwood in drawers and closets for a fresh woodsy smell.
* Simmer some cinnamon sticks and water in a pot on the stove.
* Dab a favorite essential oil onto a piece of fabric and stash it wherever you want a pleasant smell -- even in the car.
* Toss a used dryer sheet in the linen closet to keep sheets and towels smelling freshly washed.
* Grow herbs in a window box. When the breeze blows, the fresh smell of basil or rosemary will come into the home.
* Keep fresh fl owers or plants inside the home. They’ll fi lter the air and provide a pleasant aroma.
* Use lemons to clean the sink and kitchen surfaces for a fresh, citrus smell.
* Bake some cookies or another dessert for a wonderful aroma.
* Place a tray of fallen pine needles on a cookie sheet sprayed with a little water into a warm oven. The pine scent will fi ll the house.
* Push cloves into an orange. Hang the clove-studded orange on a string and place in a corner. The orange clove scent will slowly fi ll the room.
* Open up the windows and let fresh air in.
* Soak cotton balls in vanilla and stash around the house.
* Bathe and groom pets frequently.
* Use a favorite-scented reed diffuser, which will lightly scent the house for weeks.
* Keep a pot of water with potpourri on a wood-burning stove or radiator for a wonderful scent.

Banish bathroom mold and mildew
10005066
Mold and mildew thrive in dark, warm and wet areas, which makes bathrooms prime territory for these unsightly substances. Learning about the conditions that are conducive to the growth of these fungi can help homeowners keep mold and mildew at bay.
Mold and mildew can grow on just about any surface, including wood, glass, tiles, grout, silicone, porcelain, and many other materials. Perfect conditions for mold and mildew growth include areas that have poor or low air circulation and ventilation, low lighting, high humidity, dampness, and warm temperatures. Considering bathrooms generally meet this criteria, mold and mildew are commonplace in bathrooms.
Mildew is a form of mold. Health experts say that mold can cause asthma, sinusitis and other breathing problems. Others claim it may lead to more serious health implications, such as cancer, immune-system disorders and memory loss. However, research has yet to determine if there’s a connection. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that there are between 50 to 100 common indoor mold types that have the potential to cause health problems.
Mold and mildew can also make rooms smell bad and musty, while the appearance of mold can mar a normally attractive-looking bathroom. These substances tend to spread quickly, so it’s up to homeowners to get it under control before mold and mildew become a problem.
* Control humidity. Humid conditions breed mold and mildew. Open a window before and after showering and bathing, or turn on the exhaust fan and let it run for a while to clear out the humidity.
* Shed some light on the situation. Darkness is a friend to mold and mildew. Keep the lights on in the bathroom after showering to inhibit growth. When the bathroom is not in use, leave the blinds or drapes open if there is a window to let in natural sunlight and some fresh air.
* Test home humidity. A hygrometer tests the humidity levels in a home. Levels above 60 percent can breed mold and mildew. Consider using a dehumidifi er in the home to take humidity out of the air. Industry experts advise keeping home humidity between 30 and 60 percent for optimal comfort and safety.
* Wipe down the shower walls. Use a squeegee or a wash cloth to wipe down damp walls and the tub to remove excess water.
* Use bleach and vinegar. Bleach and vinegar inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. Use a cleaning solution of vinegar and water, which is less caustic than bleach, or mix fi ve parts water to one part chlorine bleach to clean bathroom surfaces. Use a stiff-bristled brush or old toothbrush to get into grout lines. If there is mold growing in the corners of tile where the tub meets the tile, soak a cotton ball in bleach and place in the corner. Remove a few minutes later and rinse.
* Saltwater soak. After cleaning shower curtains in the washing machine, soak them in a saltwater solution to prevent the growth of mold and mildew in the future.
* Use special paint. Fungus can grow on the paint in a bathroom as well. Use a special mildew-resistant paint in areas prone to moisture.
Mold and mildew have grown in just about everyone’s bathroom at some time. By eliminating the conditions that help it thrive, it’s possible to keep these fungi in check.
