These designs are called rangoli patterns. Rangoli is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘row of colours’.
Rangoli has been used as an art form across India for hundreds of years.
Rangoli patterns are usually made on the floor but can be made on walls as well. They are generally
made out of rice, flour and coloured powders. Sometimes flowers, grains and pulses are also used.

During Diwali, rangoli patterns are created on the floor to welcome the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and to ward
off evil spirits. It reflects the Hindu beliefs about hospitality and perfection in art. They are made by sprinkling sand or other materials by hand, which can be very tricky.
It takes a long time to create a perfect rangoli pattern. Why do you think Hindus try so hard to make their patterns
at Diwali?
