Divorce Act of 1968
• This reflected the expectations that marriage should be based on love and companionship and allowed divorce for “marriage breakdown” after separation of 3 years.

Theories of Divorce• Divorce occurs for many reason.• Sociologist Emily Nett identified two categories of
divorce: marriage “mistakes” and marriage “failures.”• She believes 17% of couples who divorce before 5
years of marriage are incompatible and they mare the wrong decision.
• She also believes couples who divorce late failed to adjust their relationship through critical transitions.

Exchange Theory
• When the costs of the relationship are high or the alternatives become more attractive then the marriage individuals may choose divorce.
Adjustment to Divorce
• The decision to divorce occurs in a three-phase process over a two-to-three year period.

Awareness Phase• One individual decides to initiate the divorce,
after a series of ongoing problems and a period of denial.
• Partners begin to withdraw from the relationship by shifting their energies to other roles.
Separation Phase• Couples plan the break-up of their marital
system, settle child-custody and financial issues.
• Notify friends and family.• Separate households.
Reorganization Phase
• Individuals establish their separate lives and negotiate their new parental roles.
Note*• Divorced individuals have twice the rate of
suicides, car accidents and physical illnesses and six times the rate of psychological disorders compared to married couples.
