LEADERSHIP TIPS1. Becoming a Better Communicator Listening Skills

Skillful listeners have a big leadership advantage over those who do all thetalking. Recent research has shown that good listeners tend to be betterinformed because active listening results in greater learning.

Listeners were also better able to get things done because they werebetter motivators of people. And finally, skillful listeners were much more

likely to be "listened to" because they'd made others feel important. Jesusmodeled this skill by frequently asking questions and actively listening tothe answers.

So let me ask you... how are your listening skills?

Serving the children of the World www.kiwanisecc.org

    2009/2010 Recognition and Awards

It is proposed that the clubs in the EC&C District will adopt the KiwanisInternational onlineMonthly Report and abandon the quarterly reporting used in past years. The introductionof online reporting allows the reported club information to be rolled up to

the Lieutenant Governorand Governor level without additional compiling by district office.

The online monthly report provides the ability for a club to customize thereporting to the specificprojects and events pertaining to the clubs activities while maintaining a

fair and consistent scoringsystem for rating all clubs. Specific EC&C questions will be added to the KI

basic questions.Effective October 1, 2009, the Kiwanis International DistinguishedProgram will be the baseline

for the Recognition and Awards Program of EC&C District. The criteria willbe similar to the followingand will be scored based on the clubs submissions reported monthly usingthe online system. The systemwill be available in English and in French. For those clubs not able to

report online they may completethe monthly report on paper and fax it to the District Office.

    WHAT IS DIABETES ?

Glucose comes from the food you eat and is storedin our liver and muscles. Your blood always has someglucose in it because your body needs glucose for energy. But having too much glucose in your blood is not healthy.

An organ called the pancreas makes insulin.Insulinhelps glucose get from your blood into your

cells. Cellstake the glucose and turn it into energy.

If you have diabetes, the pancreas makes little or no insulin oryour cells cannot use insulin very well. Glucose builds up in yourblood and cannot get into your cells. If your blood glucose staystoo high, it can damage many parts of the body such as theheart, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

A simple test can tell if you have diabetes.Talk to your doctor or visit your health

    clinicfor more information.

As you are aware, several initiatives are underway to improve memberretention and grow existing clubs. For the administrative year 2009/2010,the division will be focusing its effort on member retention and growth; onesuch avenue will be through club satellites. To give you a betterunderstanding of what club satellites are about, we deem it necessary as adivision to inform our members through the division bulletin. Here goes!

    Club Satellites

What is a club satellite? A club satellite is a small group of individuals, whobecome members of an existing Kiwanis (host) club. The club satellite holds itsmeetings and service activities at a location that is separate from the hostclub.

Why would a Kiwanis club want to start a club satellite? Forming a clubsatellite creates an opportunity for Kiwanis clubs to expand into locationswhere and when circumstances do not support the formation of a charterstrength club. Examples of areas where a club satellite may form are:

    Small towns

    Rural areas

    Ethnic neighborhoods

    Business parks

    Medical complexes

Shopping malls, markets and retail stores

Can a Kiwanis club have more than one club satellite?Yes. A Kiwanisclub can have several club satellites in an area that each addresses a specificneed.

How many members do you need to establish a club satellite? There isno minimum number of members required to establish a club satellite. However, consideration should be given to how well a small number ofmembers can meet the specific needs of the area served.

What are the responsibilities of the host Kiwanis club to the clubsatellite? It is the role of the host Kiwanis club to assist the club satellite inobtaining and maintaining a high level of commitment, activity andenthusiasm. The success of the club satellite involves continued contact, interest, counsel and advice from the host club. The host clubs responsibilitiesinclude:

ensuring club satellite members receive proper orientation, support andcontinued education

encouraging club satellite members to participate in host club, division and

    district activities

helping to develop a membership retention and growth plan

    supporting club satellite activities

    processing all membership applications

    26/36

Do club satellites elect officers or have a separate board of directors? No. A club satellite operates basically as a committee of the host club underthe direction and guidance of the host clubs officers and board of directors. Aclub satellite may choose to determine a chairperson to preside overmeetings.

Do members of the club satellite need to attend meetings or

functions of the host Kiwanis club? Attendance requirements and theworking relationship between the host club and the satellite are determinedand agreed upon at the local club level.

Do club satellites pay dues to Kiwanis International separately? No.Like other members of the host Kiwanis club, members of the club satellite paydues only to the Kiwanis club. The host club pays appropriate dues and fees toKiwanis International and the district.

How do club satellites determine service projects and fundraisingactivities? As with other operating committees of a Kiwanis club, the clubsatellite will propose fundraising activities and service projects to the hostclubs board of directors for approval.

Can a club satellite sponsor a Service Leadership Program club? Manytimes a Service Leadership Program may be the reason for developing the clubsatellite. The official sponsor of the program would be the host Kiwanis cluband the club satellite would be the committee to oversee and direct supportfor the program.

Is a club satellite represented on the host clubs board of directors?Host clubs may develop a club policy for at least one member of the clubsatellite to be on the clubs board of directors, but this is not required.

Do club satellites maintain their own bank accounts and financialrecords? It is the duty of the host clubs secretary and treasurer to maintainall records and bank accounts for the Kiwanis club, which would include therecords of the club satellite. However, arrangements could be made toseparate monies raised by and distributed by the club satellite. All bills, payments, deposits need to be approved by the host clubs board of directors.

Can members of the club satellite hold office in the host Kiwanisclub?

Yes. As active members of the host Kiwanis club, members of the club satelliteare eligible to be vote on club matters, hold office and serve on the club board

    of directors.

If a club satellite grows to 25 or more members can it become aseparate Kiwanis club?

Yes. If a club satellite attains the required number of members to becomechartered as an official Kiwanis club, they can follow new club organizational

    26

procedures to elect officers, adopt the club bylaws and petition KiwanisInternational to be recognized as a Kiwanis club.

Would the host Kiwanis club be penalized with a membership loss iftheir club satellite organizes as a separate Kiwanis club?

No. In the event that a club satellite would attain the minimum number ofmembers and organize as a new Kiwanis club, the host club would be theofficial sponsor of the new club to receive appropriate recognition by Kiwanis

International. In addition, the members of the host club that became chartermembers of the new club would not be counted as a membership loss thatwould affect any awards or recognition by Kiwanis International.

Kiwanis, through guidance and example, works to develop future

generations of leaders. Every day, Kiwanians are revitalizing

neighborhoods, organizing youth-sports programs, planting trees,

building playgrounds, and performing countless other projects to

    help children and communities.
