The last couple of meetings we have been averaging about 25-27 people. I’d like to thank the members of this organiza- tion that take the time to attend the meetings, communicate by phone or email, and help spread the word that the orga- nization is alive and well! At the last meeting Tom Fausser brought a video from Scotty Mason, who is a well known modeler from the east coast. We were able to watch about ½ hour of the presenta- tion, which was excellent! February HighlightsThe NMRA Achievement Program - John AndersonJohn gave a presentation discussing the NMRA’s Achievement program, and the process to completing the certifi-cates. First, he discussed the Golden Spike which is the easiest, and for many people, the first AP award that theyearn. It is designed to demonstrate familiarity with different areas of the hobby, rather than expertise in a particulararea. The AP is a system of requirements for demonstrating a superior level of skill in various aspects of our hobby. Itcovers not only building various types of models, but also building other things which are important to the hobby, such as scenery, structures, track work, and wiring. It also recognizes service to the hobby and the NMRA, whichare important as well. John also shared with us the process of getting each of the certificates. He mentioned that you don’t have to haveyour models judged at a convention, it can be done at a meeting, or we can even set up a time on a weekend orevening to come over to your house and have them judged. I’d like to challenge the NMRA members in this orga-nization to participate, so as to improve your modeling skills and lets see some of our members listed in the ScaleRails Magazine. I’ve included a follow up article from John Sing of the Coast Division on Page 5.

A Brief History Of the Rogers County Model Railroad AssociationBy Orville Edwards

The Early YearsThe organization came into existence on December 4, 1987. The club was a modular club for both N and HOgauge and it's purpose was to show the layouts at train shows. The Mid YearsThe club traveled to various Train Shows showing both the N gauge and the HO gauge layouts. Much experi-ence was gained at this time concerning display and operation of a model railroad.Re-OrganizationIn the mid 90's the club disbanded the N gauge layout and the HO group re-organized itself into a HO Club. Theclub still traveled around showing it's HO layout. The club located itself at it's current location in 1994 andstopped showing the layout at train shows.Current ClubMany improvements have been incorporated in the current layout. DC was replaced by DCC. A lot of work onthe scenery has taken place. Currently, the club is installing a Signal System to control the operation of the lay-out. The signaling system operates as ABS during normal times and switches to CTC for our operation ses-sions.

Everyone is invited toRoger Gleason’s home afterthe meeting to visit theRogers County Model Rail-road Association’s layout.Maps will be provided at the meeting.

Blending Digital Photos - Dave Steensland

Dave gave a slide show presentation on what you can do to improve those pho-tos that don’t have backdrops, or may have unfinished areas. Dave gave sev-eral examples of photos that he has taken on layout tours, such as the oneshown below. He used a photo from Bruce Chubb’s railroad and cut around theengines then he layered them over a real digital photo. The results are amazing!

Dave also showed examples of his own layout. He has reused one of his favoritereal photos and placed it behind several of his layout photos to give a much morerealistic look. Below is another example showing his engine house with the simplesky blue backdrop behind it. He then took and cut around the scene and layered iton his favorite prototype photo and you can see the results. He also briefly talked about the different types of programs and books available toassist you. Give this a try, you won’t believe what a difference it makes with ourmodel photos.

Model Contests: What do I get if I Participate?by John Sing, Model Contest Chair, Coast Division - (used with permission)

As with all things the NMRA does, most of us probably agree the value provided by our Regionand Division are a large part of the benefit derived from the organization. This article offers somethoughts on the service provided by the Model Contest to each of us as members, and the benefitof participation to the individual. The Model Contest has the following objectives:

A forum for sharing our modeling with each other An attractive, well-run venue for fair, friendly competition A vehicle for inspiring and enhancing individual and collective modeling skills, and thus, our

enjoyment of the hobby

A well-run Contest provides a pleasant, positive venue to showcase your modeling, the result ofyour time, effort, tenacity, and joy. It is not necessarily about winning, it’s about the joy of sharingyour modeling works-of-art for all to see. Show and Tell tables are often provided adjacent to thejudging and are perfect for sharing your works-in-progress and non-contest modeling projects. It’sfun to share your pride and joy. We love it too!

Participation can be a catalyst to meet other members who could be helpful and friendly resources, whether for ideas, research, expertise, materials, advice, or just plain friendly helping hands. Par-ticipation improves your modeling faster and with more fun than would happen otherwise.

Sharing your work provides inspiration for all, and can expand our ideas of what is possible. Itmakes an excellent attraction for meets and conventions, and helps prospective members seewhat the NMRA is about. It also makes the shutterbugs happy. Ah! A satisfying feeling, whetherbeing inspired or providing the inspiration.

Model Contests are an excellent compliment to the NMRA Achievement Program, (which in itself isalso intended as an inspirational vehicle). Participating in Contests is a good initial step into pursu-ing the AP. Participants in either Model Contests or the AP will find themselves coming in touchwith the friendly expertise, experience, and resources of our best and most skilled model railroad-ers.

And of course, friendly competition is always fun, and a great motivator. As you can well imagine,it’s very inspirational and motivational to ‘get that project done’ as contest time nears!

I’ll paraphrase an NMRA Model Contest article that was written by Gerry Leone, MMR:

“Participating in the Model Contest isn’t about “you vs. the judge” or “you vs. them”. It's reallyabout ... “you vs. you”. It’s about pride and joy, it’s about sharing your work, it’s about being in-spired (and inspiring others), and in the process, meeting your fellow modelers and expanding yourmodeling horizons in ways you would never have anticipated.”

So, consider participating in the Model Contest or Show and Tell, with a model you've built and areproud of. By giving of yourself and sharing, we’re all winners.
