Division of Geology Inclusive Dates: 1893-1973 Scope & Content: Consists of reports, analyses, maps, photographs, diagrams, charts, and correspondence. Many of the collection’s maps are USGS topographical maps with varying annotations. The photographs folder contains early images of the Mt. Pleasant area, East Tennessee manganese mines, limestone quarries, and kilns. Series II includes what appears to be an early draft of Dr. K. C. McMurry’s dissertation on the economic geography of Tennessee’s Central Basin. The draft includes a number of map excerpts, original photographs, and hand-painted watercolor maps. Series III contains maps, diagrams, reports, data, and drawings relating to the Upper Mississippi Embayment area located in West Tennessee. Series IV is entirely linen-backed maps, most likely for use in the field. Oversized material, primarily geologic folios, comprises Series V. Administrative/Biographical History

The Tennessee Geological Survey encourages and promotes the prudent

development and conservation of Tennessee’s geological, energy, and mineral

resources by developing and maintaining data bases, maps and technical services;

providing accurate geologic hazard assessments; and disseminating geologic

information through publications and educational outreach activities.

The Tennessee General Assembly established the first Tennessee Geological

Survey in 1831 and appointed Gerard Troost as the first State Geologist. This

makes it one of the oldest geologic service and research organizations in the

country. The survey advises other state agencies and federal and local

organizations on matters relating to Tennessee geology.
